The Laws of Physics

Rate this book
Dear Author,
A Master sits with his back against the wall with a waiting “bone” for his pet. However his pet must make his way across the floor covered in mouse traps without getting caught in order to get his bone. They’ve been here for hours playing this game. It’s been a slow go and the Master’s pet has been unsuccessful in his first two attempts. What lead up to this wicked game? Is the third time the charm? Does puppy get his bone and a reward at the end? Please say yes! He’s tried to be a good boy.

Photo Description:
There are two men in a playroom. The first man— Master— sits naked and erect with his legs spread. He is a vision of physical perfection and male beauty. He holds a riding crop and nonchalantly watches his pet. The other man— Puppy— is on all fours wearing a leash, muzzle, and chains. He has a tail butt plug and is facing Master, with his head down in a submissive pose.

On the floor around them are many mouse traps which have been positioned in a game. Puppy must get past them safely, without making them snap, in order to get to his Master’s bone.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This is the story of a naive young man who falls in love with a porn star. The beginning of the short story seems very realistic to me. When you’re shy to the point of not daring to speak to your colleagues and you have the feeling of being awkward, perhaps because your parents repeated it to you all your life, you might very well end up alone and bored to death with your lonely and not exciting life. At some point, you may even be willing to do stupid things like stealing in a boutique selling luxury goods to give yourself some thrills or maybe attract attention. It’s a way to make your life less flat and more interesting.

The story of a naive and shy young man doesn’t interest you? You’re bolder than that and don’t believe that being shy and naive that much in this day and age is impossible? Believe me, it’s still possible. Even today in this era of the Internet; particularly in this era. And shy people sometimes do stupid things to stand out. That's how Fred gets caught by Wolf, who also works as a security officer in the shop Fred steals a scarf.

As for the porn industries, I can’t say whether things can happen as described in this story. I've never worked as a movie producer, director or as a porn star, and I don’t know anyone who worked as such. All I know is what I read. The porn stars are known for their overuse of alcohol and drugs. Some of them die of overdose. The older the porn stars get, the less they work in porn movies. So they want out and try to put their money into the production of pornographic materials, preferably “chic” pornography, and to do so, they need to find new talents. I know at least that this part is true.

Fred postulate on a porn actor's position in Wolf’s new company. He’s so delighted that his interview was a success and so eager to please his new boss that he signs the contract without reading its terms. He’s shocked when the filming begins right away and he gets hooded, “kidnapped” and incarcerated. Everyone finds that he plays beautifully. Of course, since he isn’t playing; he’s really terrified.

It’s at this moment that Wolf’s protection instinct wakes up and he discovers that touching other men does not always equal sex; you can touch to reassure or to show affection. And sometimes, this kind of human contact can be much more satisfying than real or feigned sex.

Some have found that the description of the sex scenes was the author’s main weakness. In recent years, I have read a lot of erotic fiction. The authors seem all to participate in some sort of sex scenes description contest. They're all trying to put in their descriptions more than the other and to outdo each other. By the time going, if you want to write sex scenes, you have to know all the most effective excitation techniques and toys. It has gotten to a point where if the MC doesn’t have eight arms besides a sex and a mouth, it isn’t enough. But I still find that tenderness is one of the most erotic qualities that someone can possess. My partner doesn’t need to beat a record of erotic efficiency to excite me.

One of my fondest and most exciting memories is that of a young man barely experienced in bed. He wanted so much to pleasure me, he tried so hard that even his clumsiness was touching and exciting. I still feel tenderness and affection when I remember him.

The sex scenes in this short story seem of the sorts we have in our everyday lives. Nothing flamboyant. The two MCs won’t win an erotic contest’s first prize. This is just about two men who make love together for the first or second time. And this is okay that way.

The role play scenes are very well described. I’d like to have a little naughty puppy like this one. ;)

What else? One night when Wolf is in California, Fred gets bored to be alone and decides to go out with his colleagues, for once. One of them made him wear a t-shirt that says clearly that he is gay. Fred drinks and sings karaoke. When he decides to go home, a gang of homophobic idiots beats him up at the bar’s exit. It still happens unfortunately. Fred is found unconscious and transported to the hospital. Wolf comes back, praying for Fred to live and mentally ordering him not to die. I admit that I found this part moving. But I'm a very sensitive guy. :)

What was wrong with this story? I can’t see. Only the ending disappointed me a little bit because I'm not a fan of happy endings. But that’s just me. I’m sure the HEA will appeal to the vast majority.

So I give it 4½ stars rounded up to 5.

Freddy's a geeky socially awkward, kleptomaniac with a penchant for science. *mutters* I seem to be on a kleptomaniac roll lately. Anyhoo, he wants to experience submission. He's turned on by all things kink and one night in a drunken fit of whimsy signs up to be considered for a role on Huge Brother. He then receives a message from The Black Matrix to meet and upon arrival meets Wolf.
*cue scary tunes*

description

Wolf gives him contracts to review which Freddy quickly signs without reading them. How many times must I tell people? NEVER. Never sign anything without first reading it! Except the iTunes user agreement. That thing is ridiculous. Just agree and move on with your life.

Wolf is smitten and can't stop thinking about Fred.

IN.STA.LUBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB! <---see what I did there? With a heaping spoonful of magic cock that virtually cures Freddy's anxiety issues. Gotta love that magic cock. It's so… magical.

Generally, the writing style is punchy and a bit rough around the edges with all the exclaiming. Third person and I aren't friends; it keeps me at a distance from the characters.

The sex is where Ms. Davis makes up ground. Role playing she does quite well and the final puppy play scene was delightful.

Also, Colby reference. *nods approvingly*

Thanks to Ms. Davis and her team for this addition to the LL event.

The juxtaposition of former, toppy porn star (now porn producer) and younger, anxious, jittery sub really worked for me.

Some of the kink in this story is not MY kink, but, hell, it worked for Wolf and Freddy.

The soldier/interrogator scene was extra dirty and particularly well done.

I was at once in awe of and freaked out by the puppy play; it was so damn realistic.

I found the third-person present-tense narration to be slightly jarring, but I was happy to get both Freddy and Wolf's POV.

I kind of hate the name Fred for some reason, and I could have done without the violence at the end. I didn't think it was necessary at all.

But overall this was a sexy, successful story that really ran with the prompt and made it something MORE.

I read this and the world didn't crash and burn. Why oh why did you warn me off? I was missing out all this time for no good reason at all.

Surprisingly sweet and romantic. And heartbreaking. Not what I expected at all. *looks side-ways*

The only thing that creeped me out and made my jaw drop simultaneously was the kink at the end. Double kink actually.

That dedication, though...*snif*

Addendum: forgot to mention the soldiers...

I can't write a review to do this story justice, not without whopping great spoilers, which kind of negates the purpose, as reviews are most useful to those who have yet to read a story.

I don't usually read in the BDSM and D/s genres, because often the dom gets off far too much on the degradation and pain infliction. Consent is at best dubious - sure, the stories imply it's given, but I'm always doubtful, and I find that hard to reconcile.

The opening chapter of The Laws of Physics sets up why consent and communication are so important. Freddy is a flutter-bye - shy, intelligent, geeky - he's actually adorable (not a word I use often, or possibly ever before), and Wolf is just wonderful - all manly-man protective and yet with such a vulnerable, gentle side.

The sexy stuff is not my thing, but I imagine this is very erotic reading, if game play (including Master/pup, as indicated by the prompt) is to your tastes, but I did love the game play for its entertainment value, and also for the pure emotional connection and trust in the relationship. That, for me, is what sets this story apart from anything else in this genre. I actually, truly believed both characters were equal partners in this sexual relationship.

A five star read for me is a story that drags me in, and keeps me there, watching, feeling, believing. I was there with Freddy and Wolf. I felt the love, the pain, the joy. Well done, Claire Davis [...]. You definitely deserve a juicy bone for this. ;)

Now, lets see...how do I start this review off...Oh yeah, that's right....

I loved it! I may be partial to it though...it's my F'ing prompt!!!
I loved Freddy and Wolf and eek! a cameo by Jake Bass!
Freddy was my favorite. I loved how with the right person he came out of his shell. Who knew someone so shy was so full of kink. AND PUPPY PLAY AT THE END! This is the kind of puppy play I've been looking for!

Thank you Claire!
I loved it!
Oh...and do we maybe get some age play in a future sequel? Hmm? Yes, maybe, please!

Let me start by saying: this is not a BDSM romance, (nor is it claiming to be, btw.) What this story IS, is down and dirty, no-holds-barred erotica, plain and simple. It's not pretty and flowery and rule-abiding. It's hard and in your face and rule-breaking. Think, Brad Vance and Ty Marton collaborating, with Jack Brighton tossing in some squick-factor and Todd Young and maybe Ash Penn throwing in characters that endear you with their quirkiness, even as they’re making you squirm.

The opening scene is more than a little alarming. And it is NOT at all what you think it is ... and then, knowing that, it isn't what you then think it is, either. It's a bit difficult to read because of where your brain tries to direct it, but one good thing that comes of it is the start of a sweet and twisted, charming and warped relationship.

Freddy is pretty much a mess. He's physically small and rather pixie-like in looks - at least according to his mother, but he can live with that. He's book smart and street ignorant. He's socially inept and nervy about nearly everything. He's also - by virtually any standard - distressingly sexually deviant. And he knows it. And it weighs heavily on him, compounding his already overwhelming perceived inadequacies until he's withdrawn almost entirely into his own neuroses.

But he can't help it. He longs so badly for a man to just ... use him. He trolls the hard core porn sites, yearning and aching to be on the receiving end of pretty much any of it. All of it. And, thanks to one night of drunken despondency, he sets off an entirely improbable chain of events, ultimately ending up on the receiving end of Wolf's attentions.

Wolf is a semi-retired porn star. He's a little concerned that he's far too intrigued and turned on by this funny little sprite of a man who talks too much and worries about every little thing and has no idea how appealing he really is. But there's no fighting it. He is completely enchanted by every facet of Freddy. It intrigues him that Freddy responds with immediate submission to every one of Wolf's gentle commands. Add to that Freddy's open worship of him, and Wolf quickly finds himself a very willing slave to Freddy's every sordid desire.

See, this isn't a hard-assed sadist taking advantage of a naïve younger man. This is a hardened, 'been there, done that,' kind of tired man embracing the sweetly offered opportunity to use his vast experiences to bring his boyfriend's every twisted little dream to life. And Freddy has years of pent-up frustration and submission just begging for release. And yeah, Wolf gets off on getting Freddy off, on playing out Freddy's fantasies and experimenting with his various fetishes, but he does it safely. They have a long list of everything - everything - Freddy wants to try, and Wolf will do anything in his power to give Freddy what he wants. But they don't act blindly, and though it's off page, their actions make it clear that they've talked these things out first, and Wolf will keep his pup safe.

There are a lot of things in this book that most of us would never ever do. In fact, I have never read another book that the HEA made me go "awwww," and "ew," at the same time. But in the end, as squirmy and uncomfortable their play may be to us outsiders, they're deeply in love, and it's a beautiful thing.

Four stars (because I had to lose one for that last line, no matter how hard I tried to not let it get to me), but bumped back up to five for the porn-star-sized balls on the woman who put this out as her first published work. This is no timid, cautious foray into gay erotica. This is fucking bold. Kudos to Claire, for not pulling her punches, for not caving under convention, and for pushing our limits instead of sacrificing her vision.

I'm just going to say it.

I feel like I just watched JenM and Claire Davis play a variation on the game of chicken.

JenM: I'd like to see you make this into something more than just a one-off fetish image.

Claire Davis: I think I can do that.

I think Davis won.

Time doesn't allow me to write many reviews but with opinions falling all over the place on this short story, I felt obligated to write one here.

After reading some comments about the beginning I feel I have to add.

The writer bleeds emotions to the pages. That is a rare, amazing gift for a writer. It is also demanding for the reader and sometimes even unpleasant as the feelings feel so raw.

That is how I felt about the beginning. Million thoughts going through my head, thinking "This can't be right. There has to be an explanation." And wanting to scream in agony with Freddy.

It is definitely a demanding start. Scary even. But if you continue beyond it, that raw emotion will turn into palpable love, friendship, understanding. And instead of wanting to hug yourself you find yourself crying tears of joy as well as

This was the perfect quick read. There was plot and a bit of conflict nothing major just perfect for a short story. The story flowed and the dialogue was smooth and not choppy.

Freddy was just a cute little thing especially when we see him through Wolf's eyes. Wolf is jaded at first but when he looks at Freddy he "sees" Freddy. Yes he is insecure and a little different but that is exactly what calls to him. Wolf is very good for Freddy. during their relationship Freddy seems to blossom. He even starts to communicate with his coworkers. Wolf genuinely seems to want to take care of Freddy he nurtures him and he even guides him.

I can not say more about the story without giving it away but if you like kink and a bit of humor you will probably love this story.

V.W. I love the cover it reminds me of how Wolf touched his face in the story. Brilliant!!!

This is not a BDSM story. This is KINK.

I can understand why this story is not everyone's cuppa. I went into it thinking I would be extremely uncomfortable reading some of the scenes. Instead I found myself sympathetic to the characters.

Your Kink is Not my Kink, But Your Kink is Okay

Because Freddy is so endearing and because he and Wolf were having so much fun with their kinks, I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Instead I laughed with them, smiled with them and enjoyed their creativity.

Freddy is socially awkward, anxiety ridden and naive. He's lonely, thinks very little of himself, and shoplifts to fill a void. In a night of wine fueled drunkenness, he signs up for an audition for "Huge Brother" a porn parody of Big Brother. He's so drunk in fact, that he's completely mistaken what he's signed up for. Instead of paying someone to have sex with him, he's signed up to "play the victim of a kidnapping". He would have known this, had he read the paperwork.

This is where many start to feel uncomfortable, because it reads like dub-con/ non-con. I didn't feel any of that. Freddy is so desperate to have someone, some experience, and because he's so "all over the place", I completely understood how he didn't read what he was getting into. (And for those that worry: nothing sexual happened) Something good comes out of it for Freddy though, as he gets to know Wolf better and they start a relationship.

This story may be kinky, but it's also sweet and gentle. Wolf is tender and patient towards Freddy and I loved the dynamic they had together. There were some very funny moments in this story, unintentional and not. (I laughed out loud at the Something About Mary moment and traitor play.) These guys clearly love each other and it was a treat watching them solidify it. In the end, Freddy is still scattered and worries too much, Wolf is still patient and loving, and I'm left with no doubt that they will have many happy years ahead. I loved how Freddy was making up for lost time, and I especially loved how much I felt for him. I wanted to wrap him up and hug him.

The fact if the matter is, if these two gentlemen could laugh through their play, than so could I. This wasn't meant to be a very serious read.
It is sexy though, with wonderful characters and creative steamy scenes. I would really love a story for Tyler *hint hint*
I really enjoyed the writing style that the authors have and look forward to more in the future.

My thanks to the authors for their time and participation in the loves landscapes event.

I went into this book expecting . I won't say why. LOL What I got was a surprisingly endearing story.

The oddest thing about this, and the only thing I found a little distracting, was the POV. And then only in that there was something unusual in how it was used. Not bad. Just different.

I really felt for Freddie. Loved Freddy actually. And Wolf was all kinds of hot.

Actually, I'm upping to to a 5. I enjoyed the story so much.

I also love this cover.

I have mixed feelings about this, but overall I kinda of enjoyed it. At first Freddy got on my nerves, but the author somehow managed to change him from a TSTL character to a likeable one. The kinky bits were mixed with humour and I like authors who can do that. Nice short read, not to be taken too seriously.

I found this a refreshing and very endearing story.

Freddy, the main story character, and I hope I don't offend, but Freddy has the social ineptitude that fits someone bordering the autistic spectrum. There's desire and knowing what you want, all mixed in with the frustration of not knowing how to achieve what you want, there's a naivety and innocence of self to this character that makes him seem like someone I know, someone very real as opposed to most created characters.

Almost a cry for help he shop lifts, takes a scarf, the kleptomanic compulsion that often masks deeper hidden needs and here was a prime example. Little does he know at that point that the security guard/aging porn star, Wolf, who apprehends him is to become part of his future.

Freddy is by age mature, yet still a virgin, he masturbates, uses toys and fantasizes but the need for real sexual experiences with a partner is paramount, yet opportunities have either not yet presented or been seized upon so far.

He meets his idol Wolf, and so we have the other main person of this story, an aging, jaded porn star coming to the end of his screen life (so much older than Freddy) and looking to continue in the business he knows so well but in a new production role.

Freddy applies for work and ends up on Wolf's new production, Huge Brother, but doesn't realise what he has signed for through not reading the contract in full, I can hear some people say how stupid, yet how many of us go through all the fine detail...you...then i suspect you are the conscientious minority. The result where Freddy becomes a hit through others thinking he's a great actor is to him a terrifying ordeal of real life kidnap and so the scene is set where against all the odds a relationship develops.

There's kink and BDSM role play in their sexual play, rather than BDSM lifestyle, the puppy play scene was so lovely and so in role for Freddy. I loved his enthusiasm for all things sexual and I loved the way Wolf finds he can relate to Freddy on an emotional level as opposed to his past which has been on purely physical role of all things sexual.
The relationship between Wolf and Freddy is so unlikely, but stranger things happen in real life.

One event that occurred, saddened me terribly, reduced me to tears and as this still happens by sick homophobes in real life brought home that equality and freedom is still to be worked for by us all and educating youth needs more work.

I found this refreshing, unpretentious and wishing all the Freddy's and Wolf's in the world could find one another.
I considered this for 4 and 5 stars and find it borderline and as such opt for rounding up to 5 stars.

Okay, OMG, Wow.

Honestly, I was not expecting what I just read. I was completely blown away in a really strange way. Thanks A, thanks for not warning me!!!
See this face?

Right, first off, from the first page, I got the feeling the book was completely like this:

A tremendously, adulterated, thick, incredibly dirty, filthy, rich, dark, chocolate cake that is all fucking naughty and nice, absolutely pigging lickable, and totally wrong.
Like the cake, this book encounters every mood possible, I think. You went from feeling like a naughty fly on the wall—watching some of the breathtaking scenes—to sobbing and slobbering all over yourself.

God love Wolf and Freddie.

What knocked me sideways was the enormous tenderness that was captured. It didn’t seem forced or made up or anything like that. The end part just slapped me upside the head, too. I don’t know how to explain it without giving it away…just brilliant though!

Although the writing style wasn’t my cup of tea but, in a strange but easy way, it went with Freddy and Wolf’s voices. Very clean and clearly written and cannot wait to read the next titbit from this author.

I read this one with an open mind because it isn't my usual choice of book.
It was not what I expected.
At its heart its a tender love story about a older porn star and a young man. The young man, Freddy, is dying to for a boyfriend and a chance to try out lots of adventourous sex. He meets Wolf and falls for him.
Let's not be coy, this book is delightfully filthy and sinfully sexy.
But its written in a gentle way to make you question your beliefs and in the end who am I to judge.
A mind fuck of good writing, sex and laughing.
Thanks to the author

This free shortie was a veritable smorgasbord of kinks - some you may share, and some you may not. No judgement here. Well, okay... Maybe a little bit of judgement about the watersports (*cough* Trump *cough*).

But kinks aside, I found the writing in this story far below Davis' usual high standards. It was both jarring and rushed, moving from scene to scene and forward in time at warp speed and at odd moments. And, while the story has the sort of sympathetic loner character that Davis does so well, Freddy didn't quite sink his hooks into me the way some of her other ones have.

I'll just chalk this one up as a rare loss for me with Davis' writing.

I'm Vanilla as a bowl of vanilla cream with only a swirl of sauce, so BDSM reads are rarely for me.

The writing seemed light and readable but this story made me squirm and not in any good way.

That a film set could be a 'scene' with potential non-con is serious stuff. What informed consenting adults get up to is their buisness, but genuine fear is an ugly aphrodisiac!

Past that there's hurt comfort; but Freddy is too vulnerable, so obviously not coping with life in general (to the point that this gets the disability shelf) that I didn't care how young he made Mr Wolf feel I was wanting him safely away.

The buffet of kink that follows is either to your taste or not, but for me that first 'scene' and how lightly it was taken means a big NO.

Contemporary kink story about Freddy, a young man who when drunk signs up for a reality porn show, not realising what he's actually agreed to. He meets Wolf, former porn star and owner of the company hosting the shoot. The pair fall for each other and Freddy discovers and gets to act on some of his kinks as their relationship progresses. Some elements of this story don't work at all well for me.
