Let's get the nitty gritty stuff out of the way first: I obtained this book free (Kindle version) because I promised to write an honest review. So it shall be - and here goes:

Overall, this is an enjoyable book that moves along quickly; it's part action/adventure, part mystery and part romance (the latter of which isn't even close to my "thing," but more on that later). The main characters, Amber Wilson and Mark Staunton (Amber's boss), work at GenFun Laboratory in New York at which, among other

Love Poison by Pete Barber is a 2014 independent publication.

The first thing I have to say is that while this book is a thriller/mystery novel with a slight science fiction tone.. the question I really have is … Who ever said a man can't write romance? This book has a dose of everything. I was not sure at first where all this would end up but I can tell you it was a really fun, imaginative and unique novel.

Amber Wilson has a slight accident while at a company gathering and ends up damaging a s

What’s It About?

Amber is a senior lab technician at GenFun laboratory, who is still reeling from the death of her mother, a year prior. She attends the office Christmas party, but feels uncomfortable being around so many people. She escapes the party, and in her haste, knocks over some mushroom specimens which she cleans up and hides in her purse. This action leads to a string of consequences, which impacts not only her future, but her boss, Mark’s future also.

Both are abruptly fired, but they s

Sometimes it’s harder to write about a book you like. A novel that’s bad or “just okay,” you notice the places that don’t work, and can mention those. But when everything works, it feels like you’re listing the same old things. I could mention liking the characters (not just Amber and Mark, who were great, but also the secondary players, like Amber’s friend Maude who provides comic relief). I could point out how the exotic locale where much of the story took place came alive through the excellen ...more

Love Poison is a fun read that takes some crazy twists – probably why I liked it so much. Not only was it well written, but the heroine, Amber, had a real mystery to solve. Both her and her boss, Mark, lost their jobs and it was all over the powerful reactions felt when inhaling fumes from a special fungus which Amber accidently took home from the lab where she worked. Now all they needed to prove was that the properties of this particular mushroom really did have the power to drive any man brea ...more

This starts off as an entertaining romantic story. Amber has shut herself off from everything except work and dealing with her sick mother for so long that after her mother’s death she has trouble reintegrating herself socially. She has a couple of close friends she feels very comfortable with. One was Maude, an older woman who I could identify with a little too well. She cracked me up. The other was her gay friend Joshua. I loved the forthright way he related with Amber. I wish he had a larger ...more

"An Action Packed Adventure, Romance, Thriller"

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast moving story which encompasses everything readers like: mystery, adventure, riveting thriller, and a romantic thrill ride. In New York at the GenFun Laboratory, Amber Wilson is a senior lab technician. She's attending an office party and really not into such socializing as she'd been taking care of her invalid mother for three years and has had no time for dating or relationships. The last time she'd been in a large ga

After reading the first book by this author, I certainly was interested in his second novel, and I must say that I am not the least bit disappointed!

I don't want to spoil the book too much - I hate spoiling good books, but I will say that I definitely enjoyed this story, and all of the characters in it. I found the story itself to be engaging and fun to read, and I have to say that my favorite part was when Amber used the mushrooms against someone who tried to kill her - the result was hilarious

Pete Barber has created a winner. This novel has it all. It has a load of science to tell the story, but never lets the science bog down the story. There is romance enough to warm your heart and body temp, but never gets sappy. There is mystery, intrigue, as well as murder and fast paced action. This book started strong and never stopped. I found myself wanting to put the day on hold while I followed this well written story. The characters were interesting, the descriptive writing allowed me to ...more

Another great story from Pete Barber. This one has a twisty-turny multi-layered edge of your seat plot with well-developed characters -- what more could a reader want? Amber and Mark lead the reader through a maze of difficulties from problems at work, through searching for the elusive source of the aphrodisiac mushroom, to facing those who want to protect their mushroom 'gold-mine' at all cost, to suspicious police officers. As dead bodies mount and Mark and Amber's difficulties spead from the ...more

I received this book through Goodreads First Reads. It was a good, solid read with strong characters and a decent mysterious flare to it. I did think the storyline was VERY unique and not your typical romance-action novel. The plot had plenty of twists and turns to it that made it a decent page-turner, though I did feel like the ending was a little predictable. I did find several chapters of this book to be a little bit boring and lagged on, but once I got through those areas I found it to be a ...more

I found the premise interesting--mushrooms used as an aphrodisiac. I haven't read anything with that concept before, which was a nice change of pace. The story was fast-paced filled with suspense, mystery, and romance. It was well-written and kept my attention.

I felt the ending was a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen more closure with regards to the Tanaka, but over I enjoyed it.

This book intrigued me from the very beginning. I was interested to see where things were going to go. The twists in the plot kept me glued to the book. I loved the characters. Mark and Amber were great but there were some others, including Amber's friend Maude that made the book fun to read. Love Poison is loaded with suspense, adventure, mystery, and even romance. An excellent book. I loved it. Highly recommend.

A little slow in the beginning but once the characters were introduced and the story got going, very interesting. Kept this reader wanting to know how the author would draw the story together and the ending was complete.

Pete's second speculative fiction novel, Love Poison, is a great ride. I've often felt Pete Barber was the love child of Michael Crichton, and Love Poison proves I'm right.
