A thrilling, futuristic sci-fi novel set in a unique and thought-provoking world, from author Shannon Duffy.

Desiree Six (because she was born on a Friday) believes in everything the Protectorate stands for. She likes the safety and security of having her entire life planned out—her career, her mate, even the date of her death. She doesn't even think to question when

4.5 - "Destiny waits." Stars!

It is inevitable, that there will be comparisons between Awakening and other popular dystopian series such as the Divergent and Hunger Games books. I would be lying if I didn’t say there are massive similarities between this book and those series. But, and it is a big but, as let’s face it who wants to read a rewrite of books they have already read before, for all the similarities, the author has managed to inject enough originality to the rest of the book as well as

*My Thoughts*

Awakening is a young adult dystopian novel set 38 years into the future. Duffy tells her story using first person narrative. Awakening's protagonist and storyteller is 16-year old Desiree Six Haven who by all indications, is a lemming who blindly follows the Protectorate's

Desiree Six lives in a society where the government dictates everything and anything their citizens do. She doesn't question anything because she doesn't know any better, until her old childhood friend Darian escapes jail and gives her proof that they are the enemy. Which will she choose? Her normal steady life or the one where she realizes the truth?

Awakening combines two of my favourite genres, dystopian and science fiction. And they

Honored to have read this while Shannon was writing it. Fell hard and fast for Darian, and was completely swept away by the vivid, imaginative world Shannon created. Loved it!!

I was so lucky to read this while Shannon was writing it. The story is gripping and will keep you turning the pages. I can't wait to read Desiree's and Darien's story again!

Although on one hand I'm really glad there are a lot of Dystopian novels these days, because I really like to read them, on the other hand this makes it extremely difficult to read an original Dystopian novel. However, the blurb promised 'a unique and thought-provoking world'. How could I not be interested in reading this?

When I was offered this book for review, I jumped on it. I have been reading so much contemporary lately that I just needed something outside of that and Awakening sounded like just the right book. I needed something that was different from what I had been reading and Awakening delivered just that.

Dystopians can be very hit or miss with me, but I found myself enjoying Awakening. Desiree as a character was likable and she is a good perspective to

I read a lot of dystopian novels and a lot of them even though they are well written follow the same basic plot, was Awakening any different?

Yes and No, let's start with the No, it is a young adult dystopian and forbidden romance is a major part of the plot, there is a manipulative governing body trying to keep the populace in check and there are rebels trying to stop the government carry out their evil schemes.

However moving on to the Yes, there is a lot that is different, the world has been in

Awakening really took me by surprise. It started out like every other YA Dystopian. But then I realized, at this point, it’s almost impossible to come up with an original Dystopian plot line, so I let it go and just tried to enjoy the book. Boy, was I wrong! While some parts were definitely cliche, the overall plot of Awakening was epic. It took awhile for the story and characters to grow on me, but once they did, I was hooked!

There wasn’t really anything special about Desiree, especially in the

Shannon Duffy mixes several popular aspects from the YA culture, and adds her own touch of individuality when she speculates the concepts of sleep, dreams, and nightmares to come with such an entertaining novel to read.

I am sadly DNFing this book. It was the worst book I have read all year and i just can not get back into this world. Every other page there where spacing mistakes that made sentences run togetherlikethis. The main character was annoying and not very smart. She wasn't a strong main character and was hard to believe. She also was very gullible in believing everything she heard. The "Villain" never made sense when we saw him. The world was hard to believe. This was just not my cup of tea at all. ...more

Awakening was exactly the kind of dystopian book that I can get into. It’s not too heavy on the frivolous details or info dumps, but filled with engaging characters and action scenes to keep the story flowing quickly and smoothly. Sure, I had some questions about the society as a whole and how it came to be, but I fully expect that to be answered as the series progresses. As a first book in a series, I think Duffy did a great job at giving readers a glimpse of this world, the meanies who run it, ...more

It's been awhile since I've read and enjoyed a YA dytopica as much as I did this one. Contemporary has taken over my TBR list lately and I've been craving something different. This landed in my inbox from Entangled Teen and I thought, why not. So glad I decided to read it.

This world that Desiree (Rae) lives in is our world. It's been manipulated by people who claim to want to keep us safe. They are protecting us from our nightmares. With the invention of the dreamscape, people are regularly

I have actually read another book by this author and loved it so I have high expectations for this book. I do like the level of description and writing style of this author. Then the blurb certainly piques my interest.

I loved Awakening. It's a young adult dystopian. I don't read too many dystopians anymore, and I am pretty picky when it comes to choosing which ones to read. I heard that Darian was going to be a swoon worthy guy, and I liked the technology aspect of Awakening, so I decided to give it a try. And I am very glad that I did. This was a dystopian that worked really well for me. I loved the romance in it and I thought the

I usually loved Entangled Teen titles. They're easy, fast-paced and exciting with plenty of romance with funny characters you can't help but root for. Unfortunately, Awakening and I just weren't meant to be.

Awakening certainly lives up to the "fast-paced" title - and takes it light years ahead. This speed leaves behind a very noncohesive feel to the novel, where events simply don't connect together because the author didn't take the time to explore the mysteries of the world and the actions her

I received an unsolicited ARC of Awakening from Entangled Teen. Going into the book, I knew little about it except it was a dystopian novel and there was a thing called The Terrorscape. Once I started reading the book, I got absorbed by the world Shannon Duffy created.

The concept behind this dystopian is very interesting. Basically in this new world, the leaders believe the root to the old world's problem, known as the Maniac Age, was happiness due to the instability of the future, jobs, love,

I snatch up every Entangled Teen book that comes my way, but I knew when the publisher reached out personally and sent this ARC my way, it was going to be good, real good.

This is the first Shannon Duffy novel I've read and what a thrilling read. There was no disappointment here.

So I know I should not make this connection at all because they are two completely different books, but this book started out with a very Matched feeling to me. YA Dystopian, Awakening brings a world where everyone is required to use a dreaming machine (called Dreamscape) to sleep. Now, many of us take sleep for granted. Many of us don't have insomnias, parasomnias, hypersomnias, and everything in between. But I find Duffy's approach greatly interesting. I'd seen hunger, water, and shelter being toyed with by Dystopian governments, but this is the first time I'd seen sleep manipulated on a wide scale.

Desiree Six is a perfect citizen of the

The story in Awakening had both unique and familiar elements to dystopian novels. I found myself really enjoying the world but at the same time feeling conflicted with the story. It was predictable. My mind kept wandering off in directions the story could have taken to make it different and stand out more.

All her life, Desiree has always followed the rules set out by the governing body known as The Protectorate. Their motto has always been in keeping its people safe and worry-free so she's never

I think with so many dystopian books out there, specially when some of them have become really well known, it's hard to find a book that really stands for itself and that doesn't have the reader dwelling in comparing them.

Awakening certainly has an interesting promise as you can read on the blurb, there were things I like but I think my biggest problem was that I couldn't connect with the characters, but since that's on a personal level, I'm sure for other people it will be different and they'd

This is the first book I have read by Shannon Duffy, something I plan to remedy in the future now that I have read Awakening. From the first page the story of Desiree Six, her family and life pulls you in with the news that her childhood friend, Darian One has escaped from the Terrorscape - the prison where the citizens of Tower are taken once they become criminals, or noncompliant. This is supposedly aimed at teens but, although I left my teens more years ago than I care to remember, I was totally enthralled by this novel - and the ending has me hoping to read the sequel asap! I adored Awakening! I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC ebook of Awakening and I finished it in a day. I couldn't put it down and now I'm dying for the sequel. Shannon Duffy's world of Tower is brought to life through the eyes of Desiree, a rule-following daughter and friend who soon learns her world is not what it seems. I finished this book within 24 hours. I didn't want to put it down. Duffy drew me into this world from page 1.
Desiree is a great character. She may seem complacent, but she begins questioning everything. She doesn't know what to believe, and whom she should trust. Darian is totally swoonworthy, but also a strong character. He does everything in his power to tell Desiree the truth but also keep her safe. This is definitely a hard task at times.

“Without the Dreamscape, we can’t sleep.
My parents remind me all the time about stories their parents told them, of how things were in the Manic Age. The time before our bodies were upgraded to sync with the amazing invention called the Dreamscape. Thirty-eight years ago, people actually had to fall asleep on their own and, sometimes, they would toss and turn for hours. My grandparents said when sleep, in its mercy, did come, it often brought with it horrible images I’ve heard people used to call nightmares.”
