Though I didn't love the art (often the drawings of main characters don't look enough like their real-life counterparts), this was a stronger 'next season via comic book' than the start of Buffy Season 8. Like in Buffy Season 8, the setting has taken some big turns, but it felt more in keeping with the feel of Angel than the 'now we're superheroes with tons of expensive technology' turn of Buffy Season 8.

The first several chapters seem low on the trademark Whedon wit, but the plot is solid. Chapter 4 and after display better and often hilarious dialogue - my guess is Joss had more of a hand in those, with the earlier chapters being more the work of co-writer Brian Lynch.

Anyway, it's great to see these characters again, there are some well-done twists and a great villian (as opposed to the somewhat lame ones in the start of Buffy season 8 - sorry I can't help but compare), so if you're an Angel fan, I heartily recommend. (It doesn't spend time explaining previous events, though, so it is truly for people familiar with the series.)

My favorite thing about the book? The dragon.

The way they brought back and incorporated so many characters from the show was lovely, although I think they did Nina a little dirty. The Spike thing was also gross but easy enough to ignore once I got past it.

I’m excited to read more, although my expectations for these books have always been fairly low. The 4-star rating is indicative of that—good enough for what it is, but don’t go out of your way if you’re not a Buffy/Angel fan.

Pretty darn good. Very dark, of course. LOTS of surprises. I did have to review the last season of the TV show in wikipedia to remember just how they all ended up in that alley. Some very nice things are included with this hardback volume: there is a nifty gallery by various artists at the back and a cool section with author's notes. A funny item is on the very last page where the author and artist have their bios, Joss Whendon is listed as "The Watcher."

I really enjoyed this volume!
It picked up a couple of months after the TV series finale and everything is in chaos!
What I really like is that we aren't given all the answers right away. Plus there was some pretty good fight scenes!
I can't wait to delve deeper and find out more (especially about that last page!)

Meh!! I was so excited to see what happened after the final scene of Angel S05... and was not satisfied by this continuation at all. The art was way too computerized, lacked detail, and I found it kinda hard to tell who was who. I also took issue with the portrayal of women; big breasted, barely clothed, and very much in typical 'comic book' fashion which has not been the case in Whedon comics up to this point (and is part of the reason why I appreciate the comic continuations; they appeal to me in a way that sexist and fan-service-loaded comics don't). Similar to the continuation of Buffy with the Season 8 comics, there was a considerable gap between the last episode of the show and the start of this comic. What happened in that gap? I'm not sure. Maybe they explain it better as the graphic novels go on, but, to be honest, I'm not putting this high on the list. I am enjoying the Angel & Faith series much more.

Much like the Season 8 of Buffy, Angel: After the Fall shows what happened after the last episode of the series. Unlike Buffy, Angel was canceled before it’s time, and the last episode “Not Fade Away” ended on quite a cliffhanger. Following up the series with comics is not only a great gift to fans, but it’s a logical way to continue the series.

The first volume of After the Fall reads very similarly to the first Buffy arc, The Long Road Home, in the fact that the differences to the television show are startling. Thanks to Angel’s plot to take the fight to the Senior Partners, Los Angeles has been plunged into a hell dimension. Neighborhoods have been taken over by demon lords who keep humans as slaves, and the sun as the moon is out at the same time, which has a strange effect certain supernatural creatures. Fans of the show will be happy to see the return of almost all the series regulars, but may be surprised in some of the different roles that they fill. Also, a lot of minor characters, such as the werewolf Nina and Gwen, are back in larger roles, which is nice to see. Admittedly, it does take an issue to get used to all of the changes in the series. The artwork is also something that has to grow on you. Although it’s far from bad, it doesn’t quite measure up to Georges Jeanty’s work on Season Eight when it comes to portraying the characters. Angel certainly looks like Angel, and Lorne looks like Lorne, but a few of the other characters look very little like their real life companions. Still, once I got use to the changes and the artwork, I began to realize that the comic still felt like Angel to me. A lot of the plot twists seemed as if they would have fit in very well with the trends of the show, and, most importantly, the characters still sound like the characters.

Another positive thing I need to comment on is the quality of the graphic novel itself. Dark Horse gave Buffy the star treatment with gorgeous covers and its clean and effective design, but IDW’s first volume of after the fall takes the cake. It’s presented in a handsome hardcover with quality cover art. The paper is of great quality, and it even has a blood red ribbon bookmark built in to prevent dog-earing. Volume one is also filled with extras such concept art for the characters, text-less covers, and additional art for the series. We also have the original treatment for this five issue series, as written by Joss Whendon and Brian Lynch, and the script for the first issue with commentary by Brian Lynch. This volume has a hefty price tag at $24.99, but trust me, they earn your money with this one.

3.5 stars. Very intriguing start. There were a lot of twists and characters I didn't expect to show up (new and old). I'm looking forward to solving all these new mysteries. And there's a DRAGON. That's always a plus.

Obviously Spike and Illyria hanging out was my favourite part.

And that cliffhanger. MY HEART.

Picking up right where the TV series left off, season six starts by getting us up to date with all the regular characters, now that all hell has literally broken loose. The tone and characterization are right on. Dragons aside, this could have very easily happened if Angel hadn't been cancelled. It got me interested in the characters again and invested in their fates.

It's no secret that the final season of "Angel" was rushed because of the network's decision to drop the show. So I was anxious to see where the story was going to go if Whedon had the time. I'm not convinced this is it.

Picking up a few months after the climactic battle against the hordes of hell that Wolfram and Hart unleashed in the series finale, Angel continues his struggles from within the belly of the beast but L.A. itself has gone to Hell - literally. Demons control the city, humanity has been enslaved and even the Senior Partners are unable to control the chaos. The storyline definitely has some potential, but the execution is a bit lacking.

The art is mediocre at best. I went in expecting some dropoff from the tv series because those involved with the show really made the characters their own and I knew that wouldn't come through on the page. The art became more of a distraction than I would have expected though. The direction some of the characters have taken as well, didn't thrill me. The plot is hazy at best, but it does end strong enough that I'll probably stick with the series for at least the next volume to see where things go.

So far, though, Angel needs to rebound from this fall.

Rating: Meh 2.5/5 😑

I was hesitant to pick this up because I love Angel’s ending, for me it was the perfect series finale even though some people say it was a cliffhanger. I just love the idea that our beloved characters continue to fight the good fight even if we can’t follow them anymore. Also, I don’t like graphic novels, I find them too short and confusing (I never know in which order to read the panels🤦‍♂️).

So I thought this was meh, I was happy with the original ending so I didn’t need to read this. It doesn’t start where it ended, adding to my confusion 😑. The graphics are nice, the story is ok, nothing too special. I will read the next volume just because it’s the one that immediately follows the series ending.

I've had this on my shelves forever, unsure if I really wanted to read it. I wasn't particularly happy with how Angel ended on TV and what I had heard about the comic series didn't exactly set me on fire to read it. Years later, I find it on the shelf and decided it was time.

It wasn't quite as bad as I feared nor as good as I hoped. The art was okay, a bit muddy in a lot of places but it was better in more places than it was bad.

One of the reasons I didn't want to read this (can it be a spoiler at this point?) was I knew that all of LA had been sucked into hell. What a miserable dystopic crap plotline. Great, not only did our heroes basically lose, they damned a city of millions. Lovely.

So that's where it opens. LA has been carved into demonic fiefdoms. Angel is still hanging out in the ruins of Wolfram and Hart's building with Wesley's spirit (and there is a big twist with Angel that I won't spoil). Gunn, Spike, Lorne, Illyria and Connor are all out there, not in fact, working with Angel.

Instantly disliked Gunn's storyline so far.

On the other hand I did like Spike and Connor's. I admit it, was always a fan of both. The creator talks about how stable and heroic Connor is in this continuation because he grew up. My thought was, no, you sent him to a hell dimension similar to one he grew up in. He's back in his element. He's also running an Underground Railroad sort of thing to save humans from the enslaving demons.

There's plenty of action if nothing else. There a few good lines but overall it's grim. Maybe too grim. That said, now long after the whole series has been over and done, I can say I'll be finishing the series. There's sadly not that much of it.

4 Angel-Stars

After Angel & Co. fought the battle at the end of season 5 Los Angeles is sucked into hell. It became a playground for all kinds of demons.

We see old friends, lots of demons and follow Angel on his fight in this new world.

As always I'd like to praise the drawings. Although they aren't like the ones Jo Chen did for the Buffy-comics.

All in all I love this series and will read on!

So I just finished a rewatch of Angel Seasons 1-5. I’d never read this “Angel Season 6” story from Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch. So I thought, no time like the present.

And it’s not great. First of all, the art just doesn’t work for this. It’s messy and globby. And the characters are difficult to identify.

And the story, it feels en media res. We are definitely after the S5 finale, but it also feels like we missed half a season’s story. Nothing is explained very well and a lot of the typical Angel dark humor isn’t present.

I may continue this…but also, maybe not.

After season 5 the show was cancelled, but the story was left on a cliffhanger. Some key characters were dead or close to death, others had walked away and wanted to be left alone. The full might of Wolfram and Hart were bearing down to end the heroes we had followed for 5 seasons and we were left wondering what would have happened. This comic is season 6 and every question we want answered, is.

Of course this being Angel, nothing is how you expect it to be. The settings are differeng, shocking revelations for the main cast are played out, new characters (along with old favourites) are introduced. I was finally able to carry on the story of one of my favourite tv shows.

There are some negatives. The first issue of the book felt more like a continuation of season 5, it took a little time to get used to exactly what was going on. This wasn't helped by the artwork. Buildings, monsters etc looked fine, sometimes really well done. But the characters you were supposed to be most familiar with were very none discript, especially in the face. I had the same problem with the Buffy comic I tried to read. Because I'm more of an Angel fan than Buffy I persevered and eventually I got used to it. But it doesn't mean I enjoyed it.

The last thing I want to mention is the amount of content you get. There is the standard cover gallery included but as for the actual story, this on;y collects 5 issues. I swear trades used to include 6. It's an older title now and can no doubt be found online at a cheaper price, or at your local library as I did, but for $19.99 (probably £14.99) 5 issues seems a bit of a rip off. I'd personally rather haVE an extra issue than a look at covers that don't do the artwork in the book any favours because they're actually of a higher quality.

I'll continue this story on eventually but I'll not be paying to do so. I recommend this to any Angel fan who wants to see how season 6 would have played out, but don't pay full price to do so.

This is the canonical follow-up to the Angel series, but kicks in a few months after the major events of the series finale. I wouldn't have been so disappointed with this if it were more clear as to what was going on with the different characters, rather than the slap-dash and somewhat confusing way their situations were put together for the reader. If things had been more cohesive, I think the in media res approach would have worked, but instead it was just awkward and confusing. Pair that with the stylized art that made it difficult to recognize some of the characters, and I was pretty frustrated at the beginning of this.

For some strange reason the cover art on here makes it look as if Angel is dipping very heavily into the mascara department. Actually, the art in general in this series is very off-putting for me--the style here is a lot more unclear than I'm used to in my comic book art, and is pretty overly sexualized when it comes to the female characters. Granted, I expect that in most comic books, considering the target audience, but it seemed as if the artist in this case just couldn't get over having all the females arching their backs in awkward ways, or otherwise shoving their breasts front-and-center.

By the end, I did wind up enjoying myself and getting less peeved with the art, but it's still a whole lot weaker than the series as a whole...and, hey, it has Conner, who is plenty annoying on his own.

After that series finale, my mind was plagued with what the hell happens next? thoughts. It ate at my conscious, wondering what the fate of Angel, Spike, Illyria, and Gunn would be.

And I had the opportunity to find out.

Of course, Angel: After the Fall didn't start where I'd expected it to. No, so much time has passed, so much has already happened, and L.A. was in Hell.

There were so many twists and turns, and so many things to find out, more than just the fates of the characters, more than just what happened after we'd left them in the alleyway in the television series.

For starters, Angel has a dragon—and he called it Cordelia (accidentally). He still fights the battle (of course). However, as it is revealed—a bit later—he isn't how we'd left him.

Another shock involves Gunn, and, hey, I won't reveal that either, but who the hell was expecting that? I certainly wasn't.

And finding our where Illyria is was one of the highlights. It was just as surprising—and like Angel and Gunn, what is happening to her kept my eyes to the artwork, to the writing, kept my hands flicking through the pages.

To be honest, I enjoyed this more than I expected; I thought I'd be put off by the style, but that wasn't the case. Overall, I am ecstatic about it—about how the story goes on—and now I am going on a complete Angel: After the Fall and Buffy the Vampire Slayer season eight "marathon."

An exciting continuation of the hit WB television series, Angel: After the Fall – Volume 1 is an action-packed, fantasy adventure. Picking up a few months after Angel’s team killed the Circle of the Black Thorn, Los Angeles has been transported to a hell dimension and divided up by several demon lords, and when Angel kills the son of a demon lord Wolfram & Hart leave him to their mercies; leading Angel to challenge all the lords to a winner-take-all battle for control of all of Los Angeles. Scripted my Brian Lynch from a story by series co-creature Joss Whedon, the comic takes the property in an interesting direction that’s more fantasy based (reminiscent of the Pylea trilogy from season 2), and the artwork by Franco Urru reflects this change in tone. Also, included in this graphic novel compilation are art and sketch galleries along with Whedon’s original outline and Lynch’s commentary for Issue 1. Angel: After the Fall – Volume 1 is different from the television show but proves to be a strong comic series in its own right.

After "Not Fade Away" I was expecting my heart to explode in feels when reading this. It is so nice to come back to the Buffyverse with Angel and company. I've always been more of a fan of Angel than the original Buffy series, so yay for me. I sincerely don't know why it took me so long to read these comics.

description

The first volume is quite good. I think they did a very good job capturing the personalities of the different characters. I could hear Angel and Spike and even Lorne. My main problem is Wesley. Not only because of the art, which makes him look like Giles, but because I don't really know if Wesley would act and speak like in this comic. However, Wesley is also one of the most developed (and underrated) characters in the Whedonverse, so I'm not really surprised by any change they may do to him.

I, like another reviewer here, was VERY eager to see what happened. I loved the show and recently watched my entire Angel: The Complete Series DVD boxed set so it renewed my interest in what happened after the last shot.

And while it was interesting, it was just a little....off for me. There was a little bit of the typical Joss humor in there, but not enough. Some characters seemed odd or slightly wrong. And I wasn't a big fan of the style of art. (It shouldn't be hard to determine who someone is supposed to be, you know?)

Thankfully, my library had this so I didn't shell out the cash for it as it's not something I'd probably read again. And if the library gets the next volume, I'd continue reading it just to get more conclusion, but...I wouldn't buy it. It just didn't ring quite as true to me as I'd have wished.

The Good: A continuation of Angel was desperately needed and I'm glad IDW was there to give fans that. A beloved series ending on a huge cliffhanger needs closure of some sort.

The Bad: I read Buffy, Season 8, before starting Angel: After the Fall and that ended up being a huge strike against this Angel series. Dark Horse did such an unbelievable job continuing Buffy that I expected the same type of continuity and follow though here. Unfortunately, when the TV series ended on such an open possibility, fans like myself wanted to know what happened to our favorite characters immediately. And this didn't happen. What we are told is in bits and pieces, like a mystery to what happened as opposed to the continuation of where we left off. The fates of some of the characters are still murky at best and the story seems to be going no where fast.

This wasn't what I expected. I'm not sure what I thought I'd get, but it wasn't this. Granted, I'm not a big comic book reader, most of my comics when I was a kid were Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and other Disney comics - so I'm a little out of my depth here.

Once I got into the rhythm of things, it wasn't hard to follow the story or the plot. Though the characters most of the time looked nothing like the actors from the TV show, and for some I had to dig deep into my memory to put an "actual" face to the name I was seeing.

Overall, I'm a little bummed we didn't get to see any of the fight going down right after season 5 ended (bloody WB/CW for cancelling Angel), but it was good to get some answers to some of the questions I've had about Angel, Wesley, Gunn and the others since the final episode a few years ago.

Will I read the rest of the "season 6" comics? Yup.

After finishing watching the TV-series, I felt empty and wanted more of Angel and his crew. There were so many loose ends, so many losses, and so many questions. The last season was intense in so many ways. There were so many things that happened and sometimes it was hard to keep up because you hadn’t had enough time to get over the last thing that happened. So when I find out that there were comics that explain what happened after the big fight I was intrigued.

This is really a good comic for those of us who likes Angel. It still has its dark and twisted moments mixed with humor. There is a lot of character development that is both shocking and fascinating.
The comic takes Angel and his crew to a whole other level and it is really good!

So if you like Angel you will definitely like the comics!

A rousing 5th season of Angel leaves far more of the characters alive - or, well at least still around, then what the tv finale would have ever guessed.

Slight problem, though. Angel is a bit, well, mortal. Wolfman and Hart decided to give him what he wanted most just when it was least needed - LA now being hell and all. And Gunn, well...

He changed a bit too. And Wesley is a bit dead. But that doesn't mean he isn't still a player.

And Angel and Wesley's change in status doesn't mean that they are not still fighting the good fight, helping the mortals fend off the demons as they can.

With the help from the dragon of course. And a few surprise allies along the way.

And so I continue to dabble in the world of graphic novels...

As a huge Buffy and Angel fan, I've wanted to see how the story continued for years. But, I just couldn't wrap my head around switching from TV to comics - until now. I bit the bullet, picked up this volume, and now I'm hooked! Although I find some of the graphics to be simplified and lacking detail, the overall visuals and colours are stimulating. Some plot elements are are taking some getting used to, but Joss Whedon's involvement means I have complete faith that all will be understood eventually. And, some of the surprises and twists were superbly unpredictable. I find I am satisfied, overall, and suspect I have a full summer of Buffy & Angel (comics) ahead.
