Sidony and Hale.
Hmmm this one is hard to put into words. I wanted to like it, but I found the MCs hard to understand. Especially Hale. The crux of the story is that Hale left to make himself a better man to ask for Sidony's hand in marriage. They had grown up together and fell in love when she was 17 and he was 18. They had made promises, and return he did, 2 years later than he said he would, and having never once written her a letter. So she's left hanging and is justifiably pissed when he fin

My first Amber Lin book! The polished writing style made me stick around, because the plot is definitely not logical.

The misunderstanding was too shallow to cause a rift and overall I found things too anachronistic. (view spoiler)

Months ago I read Falling for the Pirate, the second book in the Men of Fortune series. At the time, I was able to grab Letters at Christmas for free at Amazon, so I've been hanging on...waiting for Christmastime to get myself in the right mood to read Hale's story!

Three years ago, Hale Martin left Sidony Harbeck, the love of his life, to go make a name for himself, promising to return after one year and marry her. Not only is his return two years late, but Sidony never once received a letter fr

I really love Entangled Publishing because I have found so many new & new-to-me authors who write such heart melting & pantie dropping romances! Amber Lin is now on my list of new-to-me authors who ROCK my book COSMOS! This is my 1st Ms. Lin read, but I am reading her Falling for a Pirate, book #2 of her Men of Fortune series, right after I write this review. Sidony (I love this unique name) was introduced to me by falling out her bedroom window in to a tree because of her troublemaking kitty & ...more

This was a very sweet short romance. Sidony Harbeck had been in love with her brothers best friend for years. When Hale left to find his fortune at sea, he promised to come back for her in a year, and to write to her as often as he could. Three years later, Sidony had not received even one letter, but she had grown up quite a bit. Determined to show Hale that she did not spend the last three years pining for him, she decides to pretend that what they had before had not been real love. Hale knows ...more

Sydony is upset with her childhood love Hale, since he promised he would write to her while he was away. But it's been three years and now he has returned, not having written even a single letter to Sydony, in that period of time. He insensitively makes a bet that in three days he will make Sydony fall in love with him again and marry him!.

This is a short, sweet and sexy read. The passion between Sydony and Hale, her brother's best friend, is written beautifully. The intimate scenes are detailed

This was truly an odd read and didn't read like a historical romance at all. It's also odd in that it's almost a submission of a book idea with a few quotes sprinkled it. Almost as if the author said, "Hey, I've got a great story idea. What do you think about..."

Hale is a bastard's son who goes off to sea to make his fortune so he can marry Sidony, a girl he's always loved. Thing is he's been gone for three years and though he promised to come back for her, Hale never wrote to

Letters At Christmas is the first in the Men of Fortune series, a short historical novella centred around the reunion of two childhood loves. It is also a sweet example of why I love a good old fashioned love story, set in the 1800's, in more proper times, with underlying passion and desire.

Hale and Sidony have been in love for years, but Hale went to sea to prove himself before he asked for Sidony's hand in marriage. Sidony never gave up on her love for Hale but when he appears after t

I got a smile out of the rather funny opening scene of this novella. Sidony finds herself caught in a tree at the worst moment possible, after trying to rescue the cat who escapes unembarrassed and with its dignity intact (unlike herself).

Of course, she is helped out of her predicament by the the one man she wishes to avoid - Hale Martin:

This is the first book I’ve read by author Amber Lin. I was first drawn into the story by the beautiful beginning to the 1st chapter, and happy to find each chapter began with a little snippet even better than the chapter before. Very beautifully written pieces. As I read, it was easy to detect what each of those snippets were, and that made me enjoy them more.
Ms. Lin has a beautiful way of writing. She draws you into the scene with all five senses. Her descriptions are so well written, and her

Letters at Christmas takes place in Lancashire, England in 1815.

Three years ago, Hale Martin promised to write Sidony Harbeck all of the time while he's off making himself worthy of marriage. Except, Sidony hasn't receive one single communication from him. Hale made sure to inform Sidony's brother that he will be back in town soon but not a word to Sidony herself.

Sidony is still in love with him but she wants to punish him for not keeping his promises. When he waltz's back into Harbeck

This is a very short novella, only about 63 pages. tells a whole story. A very nice way to spend your coffee break.

Sidony doesn't want to be waiting for Hale to return and fulfill the promises they shared. He promised so many things, including the promise of letters. Not a single one ever came her way. She's miffed, for sure.

For his part, the three years at sea were harder than anything he could have imagined. He hadn't wanted to burden her with words of loss and fear and storms. Idiot

I've read a few of Amber Lin's contemporary romances so I was curious and excited to see Amber Lin's name in historical romance.

Letters at Christmas was a short, but well written and sweet historical romance with a pinch of sexy thrown in.

This was a nice reunion love story of two young lovers driven apart by circumstances. Hale had promised to return to Sidony after a year, but one year soon turns into three without any contact from Hale. Sidony loses hope, but when Hale returns home after three

Odd time of the year for a Christmas romance, but it is winter here, so…

I liked this story for a number of reasons. Sure, it’s a bit anachronistic – steamy scenes are as capable of being anachronistic as any other. And there were some Americanisms – you write to someone, you don’t write them.

However I just enjoyed this novella.

The characters are nice people, and they genuinely love each other. We don’t have a hero who is trying to stay unmarried (possibly my most hate

This was previously published in the anthology A Very Scandalous Holiday, and here is my review: Letters at Christmas by Amber Lin has a plotline that I normally love - lost lovers reunited. In this case, Sidony Harbeck's beloved, Captain Hale Prescott, has returned from seeking his fortune and readers can feel the tension right away. Here is a man who promised to write and promised to return, and not only did he stay away far longer than anticipated but Sidony received not one letter from h ...more

Letter's at Christmas by Amber Lin is a book full of love and a trust that must be earned back.

Hale left three Christmases ago, and Sidony waited for him through each of her three seasons. She expected him to come back after the first season and when he didn't, she hoped he would come back after the second, finally after the third, she has given up hope.

Hale fell in love with the beauty that was called Sidony three years previous to his return. Sidony gave him the most precious gift that she c

Letters at Christmas was not quite what I expected. I love old timey books as nothing really happens between the main characters until the end. Well, this is a more modern old timey story I suppose. There is lots of sexy time in this book! Much more than I expected for the time period it is set in. I did enjoy the story a lot.

Hale left Sidony three years ago to go make his fortune so he will be able to marry her. He promises to write every day,

I like this type of historical romance. I immediately liked Sidney her strength from feeling as if Hale had jilted her. I am also a huge fan of the best friend brother/sister love stories I have no idea why. Hale's love and determination from the start made me smile I like that he was determined to win her from the start and clear that he loved her, if only in his POV.
I actually felt bad for Sidney she felt like she was an afterthought or that he was just settling it was quit sad. Yet Hale clea
I originally read this story as part of A Very Scandalous Holiday Anthology (which I gave a rating of 4) and when it showed up as an Amazon freebie over the summer, I figured I would pick it up to read again near the holidays. It is a cute story of two childhood friends that fall in love. But one has no fortune and needs to validate his ability to take care of her. So off he goes - but things don't happen the way he planned. Now that he's returned she's a bit peeved at him and he needs to win he ...more

If you're looking for a tidbit of historical Christmas romance than "Letters at Christmas" is for you. I was positively giddy as I turned each page with wild abandon. Captain Hale Martin has returned to marry his best-friend's sister, the only woman he has ever loved. The only problem is Sidony Harbeck had been dreading his return. After three years without even one word, how can she believe that he is truly in love with her?

LETTERS AT CHRISTMAS by Amber Lin is an exciting Regency Historical Romance. #1 in "The Men of Fortune" series. A novella, only 64 pages, but packed full of holiday spirit and love. While, "Letters at Christmas" is a quick read, don't let it stop you from reading this fast paced tale of love re-united, passion with a sweet balance between romance, passion and love. Well written with engaging characters. A nice introduction into "The Men of Fortune" series. Well done! I am looking forward to more ...more

The story of Letters at Christmas, is a story of second chance. It's very sweet and steamy, but heartbreaking at the same time.Though it's kinds of short. I love Sidony, She's the typical cliche of a woman, not sure if should trust the hero, Hale again.

Hale, is very sweet and charming, very devoted to Sidony, even though he is not sure if she'll be able to forgive him.

This story is absolutely touching, in every way possible.

Great structure, but I was missing character development at the beginning. The characters were childhood sweethearts, but we didn't get any of their history at the beginning. Hale went to see for three years without nary a letter home to Sidony. He came back in the first few pages but they appeared to be having an inside conversation and I felt left out. I'm glad I stuck with it because somewhere after 25% I felt I knew the hero and heroine a little better and rooted for their HEA.

Young love has come and gone for Sidony Harbeck. Her heart has been damaged. Captain Hale Martin broke her heart before and she will not ever allow him to do so again. How could she when she gave him what was most precious to her and he abandoned her. Hale wants her and he will try to win Sidony back. You could not help but to cheer for Hale. I loved the passion in this book. If I have a is that it was too short.

A short but sweet romance that I was surprised to find I enjoyed. There were a few typos but nothing major. All in all it was a nice little read for my train ride home from work and to break from some of the other crazy stuff I've been reading.

Would recommend to anyone looking for a little afternoon romance.
