When Little Deer wakes up one morning, everything is covered in snow. He can’t even find any grass to nibble! Squirrel and Rabbit can’t wait to go out and play, but Little Deer isn’t so sure he likes
Little Deer experiences his first snow in this sweet winter-time picture-book from English author/artist team M. Christina Butler and Frank Endersby. Not sure at first about this cold white stuff, Little Deer eventually adjusts, and enjoys playing with his friends, Rabbit and Squirrel. Together, the trio attempts to make a snowman, and wind up skating on the nearby pond, frozen over. Little Deer concludes that while the snow may have come as a surprise, it provided one of the best days ever...
I am familiar with Butler's work largely through her Little Hedgehog picture-book series, created with illustrator Tina Macnaughton, so The First Snow is the first of her books that I have read to be illustrated by Endersby, who apparently also worked on a number of her other titles. Story-wise, this is very much in the vein of the Little Hedgehog books, offering a heartwarming tale of anthropomorphized animal friends. The accompanying artwork is cute, and well-suited to the tone of the story. Recommended to younger picture-book audiences who enjoy sweet animal stories, or who are looking for winter tales.
This is a lovely story, my 2 year old daughter enjoyed this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the touch of glitter helps make them even better for youngsters.
The First Snow tells the story of a little fawn experiencing its first snow with its woodland friends. Throughout the story, they all experience the fun and slippery excitement of snow and ice. It's a very short read that would be great for storytime or bedtime for younger children.
