HYMNS FOR THE FAMILY OF GOD is a good contemporary pew hymnal, traditional but with a slant toward Modern Evangelical. A little dated -- it actually goes back to 1976 -- but still popular, even though now it must be bought used. Hymns include "For the Beauty of the Earth (Tune: DIX)," "What Child is This (GREENSLEEVES)," "Low in the Grave He Lay (CHRIST AROSE)," "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (PICARDY)," and "In the Garden." Might not be the only pew hymnal a family would keep in the piano bench because of the explosion in American hymnody of the past 30-35 years.
Please note that even if you buy a "Revised Edition," it is likely to be the same as the 1976 original edition. Happily, good used copies can be bought cheap. Not all covers are dark blue; some are red, green and even grey.
