Quantum Level Zero

Rate this book
Winston Churchill stated that history is written by the victors. Germany terrorized Britain’s civilian population with V1 and V2 rockets. The Nazi historians would have a legitimate rational for that had they won the war. Quantum Level Zero takes place in a dystopian society of the near future Earth, where fanatics are about to win the war on terror for the good for the people and the good of society.

Forces of reason have the edge in the war, but will that remain the case if First Contact goes to the revolutionaries? Quantum Level Zero opens as the world awaits the arrival of Al-Rama’s latest ally, an advanced alien race offering anti-gravity, zero-point energy, and faster-than-light travel. Al-Rama won’t be satisfied with anything less than world domination. Eli won’t be satisfied with anything less than total destruction of Al-Rama’s empire.

I love reading science fiction, so when I was recommended this book, I decided to try it. I loved it!

Elijah Baraki is a likable character. He is extremely driven and determined. He is a scientist on a mission. After his family's death at the hands of a terrorist, Eli finds himself distrustful of the current leader and, wanting to get as far away from his influence, gathers together other like minded individuals. But it's not as easy as he first thought.

Trevor Hadley is also a likable character. I must admit I liked this character more than any of the others. He too finds himself on a mission after blowing up his own research lab to stop it falling into the wrong hands. Working with Eli is a challenge, but what he stumbles upon could spell disaster of epic proportions for the whole world.

This is a fantastic science fiction novel that captured me from the first page. It took me on a roller coaster ride of emotion from beginning to end. The story is told from various points of view, mainly Eli's, Trevor's and Sharon's. I am very technically minded but, unfortunately, some of the more technical aspects of the story flew over my head. I never did anything more than high school physics, and trying to understand the more challenging aspects of quantum mechanics written about in this book gave me a slight headache. Nevertheless, the storyline gripped me and didn't let me go. The world building is shockingly believable and sent a shudder through me at the thought of our society (in the not so distant future) being slowly and systematically won over by a charming and charismatic personage like Al-Rama. There are a lot of other characters in this book that I haven't mentioned. However, I really liked getting to know most of them (apart from the bad guys, of course). They all come alive on the page and bring the story to life. They all have interesting, if complicated, lives.

This story is also full of action, adventure and danger that had my heart pounding and my adrenaline pumping! The author delves into some really chilling subjects, such as fanaticism and belief which can be manipulated to create terrorism. There is a saying, "One man's soldier is another man's terrorist", depending on which side of the fence you stand on. This is how cults and other religious groups can become radicalized and terrorism grown in my opinion. Politics also plays it's part and those disenchanted with governments or organisations can also spawn extremism and terrorism. The author has woven these real life issues into a future dystopian backdrop, but it could easily be written in today's world. The scenes are well written and some of them can be a little upsetting in their descriptions. The moon scene with Trevor is a little violent and made me shudder with revulsion at what was happening within the moon base. I must admit that I did enjoy the scene where the spaceship Eli designed and built suddenly disappears. It certainly left a lot of people scratching their heads, including me! I will leave it to you to find out what happened to it. *evil grin*
There are several twists and turns, and a couple of surprises that completely caught me unawares. I reached the end of the book and found myself with a book hangover. I love books that do that, but it also frustrates me at the same time; when a book just won't leave you alone even after several hours or days afterwards, then you know it was a good book. And this one certainly was good.

Ted Grosch has written a fast paced debut science fiction thriller. I love his writing style, which is fast paced but not rushed. The flow of the story was wonderful too. I was worried that the alternating view points would cause the book to be jumpy, but it didn't affect it at all. I would definitely read more of his books in the future.

Due to the technical jargon and the violence in this book, I do not recommend this book to younger readers under 16. I do, however, highly recommend this book if you love science fiction, dystopian or thriller genres. - Lynn Worton

This book had one of the best and early hooks I have ever come accross.

I seriously think this is an author to put on your watch list. All as in all big publishing houses look for one thing within the first three sentences. An early hook.

This book had me from the get go.

I am not a big fan on jumping points of view and I almost did star down my rating due to the authors use of this teqnique but I tried to see how he could have possibly written the book in a way that would not make these jumps necessary and I couldnt.

I have always been facinated in the howcome behind religious fanatacism and this book does not even try to explain it what it does do however par excellance is show it. So many scenes in the book was so vivid and so obviously real that I felt drawn into the world of extremism as much as the characters.

This book has some info in it that is pretty scientific but thank goodness the author did not assume we were all fluent in geek and he dumbed it down to remain relevant but not so as to be off putting by people like me.

All in all, this is a really unique read and although it will not appeal to all, I think men, specifically will really love it. It is action packed and well worth the read.

This is not my typical style of book. It takes you an a futuristic look at what the world could (if your adventurous) have been like. It reads almost as an action movie, not a book to me. You follow these different characters on their space ships as they run into aliens and others that want the world their way. Your imagination has to run wild while reading this book, which I struggled with. Overall entertaining story line, I wish there were a few more details to polish to the story line and make it more cohesive.

Trevor Hadley knows they are coming to steal his research so with the generator gone, he looks for a place to lie low before trying to contact Eli. He heads for his brother Cameron's cabin.

While Dr Eli Baraki has lost his entire family to terrorists, seemingly random citizens are rounded up and sent to internment camps as they are deemed a danger to the country. Sharon, after getting angry at a Gus Collasum rally her brother insisted she attend, finds herself on a bus to nowhere. Gus Collasum is the face of the Al-Rama regime that projects an image of a caring, people friendly policy for mankind while its real intent is unknown. Al-Rama talks of friendly aliens, willing to share their advanced technology for the good of earth.

This book is a fact packed, science fiction novel, a little low on depth of character especially at the beginning of the book, but is jam packed with cool technology and amazing flying machines.

The story really picked up for me about a quarter of the way through so I'm glad I battled with the vivid technological descriptions and quantum physics.

Some of the conversations were a little repetitive (what a character is thinking and then his words) and there are a few editing errors but overall, I enjoyed this book and without spoilers, the excitement does build.

If you are looking for a factual, technical sci-fi read with action, aliens and space travel, look no further!

A fast moving dystopian / futuristic thriller about the war on terror. It begins dramatically with Trevor Hadley, a scientist who destroys his research before it is confiscated by the United Nations. Then the author begins to explain the bigger picture of a world increasingly under threat from computer savvy fundamentalists.
This novel is packed with science fiction and technology and provides a feast for fans of those genres. The narrative jumps between the several main characters and keeps you interested with a rich plot and plenty of story.
An explosive and entertaining mix of military thriller, new energy technology / science fiction, space travel and the battle for world domination.

I loved the futuristic angle this author used, a lot like Continuum the tv series.
I am not so sure what I loved more, the series or this book and which one of the two reminded me more of the other.

Still, the book was a bit long. Not so much that I will mark it down with a star but some of the more technical aspects, in my opinion need not have been here.

I am not sure who to recommend this too. Sci-fi nuts, yes. Adventure nuts, yes. Terrorist action nuts, yes. Romance nuts, no.

But for the rest, I am sure all will find something in this book which they love.

This was a good, if long read.

An imaginative debut story by an author worth watching. Makes me hope his vision of the future is not prophetic.

Good book. Had me interested in the characters and what would happen next to them. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to read a science fiction book that could actually happen.

I recevied a copy for review of this book and must admit I was a bit nervous to start it.
I love watching sci-fi and playing xBox games full of sci-fi but reading it seemed a bit too much.

But, I asked for a review copy so I started on it. I sat amazed as page after page I was a character in one of the best xBox games I have ever played. I actually think this book should be made into a game. It will be played and loved by millions. I can already see the smaller missions etc.

The book is really good. I am not convinced I will love all sci-fi books based on this one though since this one has a very down to earth, yes pun intended, taste to it.
