As much as I hate the thought of people getting shot in real life, give me a good story about an assassin, a dark plot, and some internal political wrangling in a powerful organization, and I’m there. It might be because I can tell myself it’s all fiction, and pure escapism, or I might just have a secret violent streak that I’m not ready to acknowledge in any other way. Be that as it may, the concept for this book struck me as fascinating, and as soon as I started reading, I was hooked. I mean, assassins who vanish? Amnesia and sudden helplessness in trained killing professionals? Can it get any more mysterious than that?

Abraham, who goes by Abe, is an analyst. A techie. Someone who is invisible to the “real” agents and powerbrokers of the secretive Company. When he gets the assignment to figure out who is kidnapping the agents, and, more importantly, who in the Company is the mole helping their enemies, Abe steps into his new role with his usual efficiency. He is physically powerful, and as his past is slowly unveiled, it becomes clear he is way more than a “techie”. He has he smarts, but he also has the drive to succeed – at possibly more than the brief he received.

Michael is an agent, a sniper of the highest caliber, but he is also someone who thinks outside the box. As good as he is at his job it is this “extra” ability to think and do the unexpected that will ultimately help him and Abe to figure out what has been going on. He isn’t too impressed with being paired with a techie, especially since Abe is also now his handler, but he quickly finds out there is a lot more to the man than he expected.

This is an action-packed, fast-moving story about two men who take on an entire agency with more twists and turns than your average novel. For being a short novella, it sure packs a punch. Told in snapshots, following each other in rapid succession, almost like scenes from a movie. I found it to be a gripping story and a very subtle romance.

If you’re looking for excitement and action, if you like dark plots, mysterious enemies, and secretive organizations, and if you’re looking for a short read that will make you feel as if you’ve just finished a novel, then you will probably like this novella. I enjoyed it immensely!

Once you get past, or should I say into, the writing style, this is pretty good read. By no means am I saying that the writing style is bad because the author is very talented. What I mean is that Through No Fault of My Own reads like a television show – you jump from one scene to the next with almost no segue. However, as soon as I realized what was going on, I got right into the book and enjoyed the ride.

Michael is a sniper for the Company. His mission goes awry and he gets captured. After several weeks pass, he manages to escape. With Abe’s introduction to the story we learn that Michael is just one of many who have been kidnapped, but he is the only one who has escaped; while several of the others have been returned, they came out of the ordeal unable to function any longer. After a briefing by his superior, Abe takes on the assignment to find the mole who has been feeding information to the kidnappers and he wants Michael on his team. This is where the abruptness of the writing style becomes really apparent as what follows is a series of scenes in which Abe and Michael form an operational relationship of Handler-Agent and work together to find out who is responsible. Were you watching this on television, the scene changes would be apparent immediately, but once I realized the format I embraced it and enjoyed watching the partnership form between the two men.

While Through No Fault of My Own is short, it doesn’t prevent Ms. Alexandrescu from packing it full of action. Rest assured that Abe and Michael do catch the responsible party, but there is plenty of action and suspense while doing so. There is just a hint of romance weaved in the story with it culminating with a kiss. So if you’re looking for a romance heavy m/m read, this won’t satisfy your craving. But if you’re looking for a quick action thriller read, then give it a go. I for one hope that the author expands on this series as I would love to read more of Abe and Michael’s story.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
