It's too bad there is neither a cover nor an opportunity to show the reader of this review some of the amazing, just amazing plates from this collection of Kollwitz's graphic art. The outside artist par excellence for her adherence to the social message and intent of art, Kollwitz is a force that runs counter to the commodification of socially uninvolved art, which is probably pretty much most of what we have now. She saw suffering, she sympathized, she made art of it. It was pretty simple. One of the 20th century's greatest artists.
