Skylar’s death came not at the end, after a long fulfilling existence, not in the middle, as a result of an untimely tragic event—but at the beginning, with her birth.

As a final effort to save her dying unborn child, Skylar’s pregnant mother, a witch, sacrificed herself by invoking a powerful spirit shade to inhabit Skylar’s body, imbuing her with life. For twenty-three y

Wasted Potential

The description intrigued me. I thought it was about as new an idea as you can get in this over saturated genre. That being said I can't recommend this book. First Skylar is all but nonexistent in this book. Oh she's the main character but she doesn't do anything remotely important or even useful. She's a werewolf but she's a weak victim. She can't fight or protect herself. She doesn't have an iron will or anything that stands out. She isn't completely stupid but she's not smart.

The main character keeps up a good level of maturity and sensibility which I find refreshing, considering the quantity of people that are regularly as thick as a whale omelette. I'm not saying she never makes a stupid move, but when she does it tends to be a knee jerk reaction that she believes she can live with.

There's a good cast of characters including a diverse crew of shifters. In this

4.5 stars! That line was on the first page. It was an epic first page to say the least and I was completely intrigued. I thought I was over the whole vampires and werewolves stories but I am so happy to say that apparently I'm not!
So many amazing character were introduced in this book and I can't even name who was my favorite. Too difficult a task. They're so complex, th

I'm half way through this novel and I'm bored out of my mind. I see the potential although I'm unsure if it can be reached. The heroine is weak and has a pathetic story line. There is really nothing to her other than what she is or potentially could be. I find myself really frustrated and angry that the most she does, is get bit by vampires all the time. LAME!!

Finished and I still found it boring... I think I'll try the next novel and hope for the best.

Meet Skylar, a beautiful and peacefully innocent young woman, in a beautifully peaceful and innocent life. She loves her adopted mother, she loves her boring little world, and if she’s a bit snarky it can be forgiven because, after all, her birth mother was a witch and the book launches off almost immediately with her beloved adopted mother being murdered by brutal vampires. Oh, and she herself is possessed by a spirit shade (the only means by which her hexy birth mother was able to save her li ...more

Edit: I received an update from the author that Moon Tortured was taken to a new editor, and a lot of things I complained about in this review might not be important anymore, since it sounds like it got some heavy editing. Anyway, I still don't know if it's the series for me (because I haven't read the new version), but I don't feel right leaving a negative review when so much work has been done to improve it, so I've cleared my rating, and might give the new version a go.

A. Overall: To begin, the book started off with a bang! Skylar was attack by the vampires of course, and her adoptive mother got killed. Just the way Skylar was acting toward the others when they tried to help her, then I knew I wasn't going to like her very much. She is nosy, sarcastic, and a bitch. I would have like more romance in this book. I know you are running for your life, but the way she describe Ethan, I would like some romance. I have a love and hate relationship with Skylar.

I liked the characters compassion but not her common sense; frankly, she did some frustrating and downright stupid moves that drove me as bonkers as it did the characters. The pack bonding is interesting to a degree but of course brutal and a turn-off at once. I have a feeling it may end up being a triangle dangle between brothers on the love front. I found Sebastian especially intriguing but there seems to be a no-go there on warming up to the leader. The vamps in this series are brutal and I h ...more
Skylar was a brat, and was not emotionally mature enough to handle everything that was thrown at her. I'm really happy that she didn't have much play time in the story itself. I did love the rest of the characters. But not quite enough to continue with the series.

I had high hopes for this book from the description and the fact that it was a werewolf book, but alas it feel short. I would have liked the action scenes to have been fleshed out more and the whiney brat who runs away all the time parts to have been put in the background rather than the forefront of the story. The underlying ideas had merit and I'm sure they are delved into deeper in the following books of the series but I have no desire to continue reading on.

I am not a stranger to PA books but I am kind of picky about which ones I read. I am a fan of all things vamp and wolf related. I blame it on Twilight. The first book I read in this series was really good I finished book one in less than two full days. I loved Sky for the start, now Ethan and Sebastian I was on edge with both.

Sky has struggled her entire life, trying to figure out who she is and trying to decide if she is a monster or not. She knows that she is a werewolf and she has never meet

Unlike a lot of this genre I have read before. At first seems like your typical were book...then there are the twists and sexual tensions...

Mostly for my own reminder - DNF 8%. it took me two hours to get thru 8% because I just could not care. Skylar just felt petulant much of it. I understand her confusion, her frustration. What I didn't understand was why she insisted on ignoring practical advice.

She had a choice between hanging with a group of dangerous strangers who had a vested interest in keeping her alive or running off to be hunted by dangerous strangers who already brutally murdered her adoptive mother and seemed intent on,

When I read the first book in a new series, I'm primarily looking for one thing: does this book make me want to read the next one? In the case of Moon Tortured, I would have to say that it did; however, the journey to that point was a rough one. This urban fantasy includes the familiar players in the genre: werewolves/were-animals, vampires, warlocks, and mentions of the fae, elves, etc. Definitely in the paranormal world here.

One of a kind

I loved Moon Tortured. The story doesn't follow the mainstream shifter books that tend to be a dime-a-dozen now. I love that the different were-animals are not segregated but come together in the same packs. Skylar takes a lot of shit from people but she let's her feelings be known and refuses to sit back and not try to help. Looking forward to the next book.

I was gifted this book by McKenzie Hunter in exchange for an honest review.

There are a lot of thing about this book that I liked. Skylar's 23, not an odd age like 15, and that she's a fem werewolf. The start of this book really gets things going. Skylar is attacked by vampires and her adoptive mother is killed. This face paced-ness keeps up through out the book. Skylar is sassy, sarcastic, and nosy all the things I love a leading lady to have. She did start out a tiny on the blah si

Fans of Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series and Racel Vincent's Shifter series will fall head over heels for this series!

Meet Skye Brooks - a born werewolf who wants nothing more than to be normal. Too bad the paranormal world is so determined to welcome her into its own. After an attack on her home, Skye is offered protection from the local werewolf pack - whether she wants it or not. Here she will meet a vast array of new people including Ethan, the brooding and domineering Beta of the pac

Delivering an exciting beginning, the action packed story snatches you in the opening scene with exciting danger, and sweeping drama. Full of shifters, vampires, witches, spells and a magical gem, the author creates an unique world with a different twist. Skylar, the main character, is thrown into a lot of emotional and physical situations that she just isn’t ready for. She has a really hard time with understanding and excepting who she is, and clearly doesn’t fit into the lifestyle of the were ...more

This was a fascinating story. I stayed up way too late but it was worth it. The characters are all well developed. The heroine, Skylar starts out a victim but by the end she is being the rescuer. Very interesting ideas with Maya the spirit. Understanding the pack was difficult at first since they treated Skylar well but at times also as a prisoner so I don't blame her for wanting to run. They had no qualms of killing her and many only allowed her to live only because it was the law.

This book was a great read! Although it started off a bit rocky, the story unfolded beautifully.

I love the way the author wrote the characters. They all seemed to have realistic feel toward everything considering their situation. I love the change that the author did with Skylar. Instead of making her like your typical heroine, Skylar remained naïve in the most perfect way. I love that the author gave Skylar a chance to really grow as the story progressed. Although I was really hoping for that b

Moon Tortured is not only the first book in the series, it's also the 1st book I've read of McKenzie Hunter, it won't be the last. It's well written, the characters are well fleshed out, the by play of Skylar, Josh and Ethan has bits of expected and unexpected teen /young adult angst. The plot that surmised Sky is more than a werewolf plays out beautify and quickly when they find out what her biological mother had done to her in uterus to keep her alive. Lots of physical violence as the Vampires ...more

A new urban fantasy that is different enough to not be repetative. It felt at first like Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, with the girl forced to a pack only wanting to be human. This is more, there us so much going on that at times i had to go reread parts thinking i missed something. I really enjoyed it though, not a lot of romance which is fine cause otherwise it would have bern predictable. Some of the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, just to understand them more. Overall an enjo ...more

At first I did not think I liked this book. sky's stubbornness\stupidity drove me batty. The more I read the more intrigued and the more I realized that she was staying true to her character. It was nice to see her grow from being a stubborn scaredy cat bent on clinging to her humanity. To taking somewhat control and stop running and to try to come to terms with herself. I cannot wait to read the next book now!

Moon Tortured (Sky Brooks Series Book 1)

I enjoyed this book. The imagery is amazing. I could visualize every scene it because it was well described and book is well written with its smooth flowing pages and a very satisfying story. “Moon Tortured” turned out to be quite different than what I expected because it wasn’t like the typical books I read, in this genre: insta-love, perfect kick butt heroine, and and overly predictable plot.
