Second Read & Review on 02/16/2025 - Dramatized Audiobook

For some reason, I jumped into "Onyx Storm," the third book of the Empyrean series, without rereading the first two books, which was a mistake—I needed a refresher! To remedy that, I revisited "Fourth Wing" in a new way by listening to the dramatized audiobook. This version features multiple voice actors and sound effects, completely transforming my experience. It brought so much more emotion to the story that I decided to upgrade my original rating from 3 stars to 4.

In addition to the audiobook, I also read the 3 bonus chapters from Xaden’s point of view, available on Rebecca Yarros' website. Seeing his attraction to Violet as early as Chapter 9 made me giddy. Returning to this series helped me appreciate many details I had forgotten or overlooked the first time around:

Revisiting "Fourth Wing" in this new format was a rewarding experience, and I’m glad I gave it another chance. Now, onto Iron Flame!

First Read & Review on 11/07/2023 - Regular Audiobook

I debated between giving this book 3 and 4 stars. While I enjoyed it and listened to the audiobook quickly, a full 4-star rating felt too generous.

The hype on TikTok and in the broader book community had piqued my interest for months. Reading it gave me a nostalgic, Wattpad-like vibe—not necessarily a bad thing—but it followed a familiar formula reminiscent of popular Young Adult fantasy from the past decade. While this predictability might not appeal to hardcore fantasy fans, it made for an easy and entertaining read. Given its mainstream success and the upcoming Amazon adaptation, it’s clear the book has broad appeal.

The protagonist, Violet, starts a bit irritating, but her character arc is solid. If you love an angsty lead, an enemies-to-lovers romance, and a brooding, dangerous love interest, this book delivers. Xaden Riorson embodies the classic "bad boy with a soft spot" trope, though some of the more steamy scenes felt a bit cheesy. The supporting cast had some standout moments—Dain annoyed me from the start, Jack Barlowe made me want to punch a wall, and Liam Mairi is a perfect angel who deserved better!

The second half of the book was where it found its footing. From the 'Threshing' scene onward, the story became pure entertainment.

As a fan of dragon-centric stories (especially missing "House of the Dragon"), I appreciated the vivid descriptions and fast-paced storytelling. While it doesn’t break new ground in fantasy, it blends familiar tropes in a way that kept me engaged. The audiobook was a great choice, and with the sequel already out, I’m excited to return to this world!

Fourth Wing, the perfect blend of high fantasy-fantasy romance, follows our homegirl Violet Sorrengail and her journey in the riders quadrant of Basgiath war college. Everyone thought Violet was destined for the Scribe quadrant, but for her mother, the commanding general, that just will not do. Every step of the way, the universe is trying to take Violet out—from her poor joints, surviving entering the quadrant, to the training, the obstacles & everyone trying to off the general’s daughter, Vi’s got her work cut out for her—here enter everyone’s daddy—Xaden Riorson— shadow-weilder, the wing leader, leader of the marked ones—Xaddy is that bitch.

The entirety of this plot was so well written—I was hating Dain, Jack & Co. right from the drop & Vi & Xaden’s connection—the tension—immaculate! The narrators were phenomenal at carrying out this vision; with Vi, Xaden & the rest of the casts’ narration on the page, it pulled me right in!

I just knew I was going to be foaming-at-the-mouth obsessed with this one & not one thing did disappoint 💯 the flip from true enemies through the plot to I love you, I’d die for you energy is *chef’s kiss* & i’m just slapping myself for putting this one off for way too long. The character development is utter perfection, Vi was the perfect, cunning fmc— her personal and physical transformations truly made this book for me!! The hottest thing about Xaden—his confidence and conviction in Vi. He is just everything she needed, and their epic, steamy, slow-burn, tension-drawn enemies-to-lovers romance puts all those who came before to shame.

ps—i’m obsessed with the dragons—💙🐉sgayel is a bad bitch, tairn is giving tired grandpa who’s been saddled into dealing with lil 🧚💛🐉andarna

Listened to the dramatized audio of this and it was so immersive!!! I’ve been putting this book off for so long because it was rather large and I’m not huge into fantasy. The dramatized audio book changed that! I loved it so much.

Went into this expecting for it to not really be my thing since it’s outside my usual genre and I was hooked… audibly gasped at the last sentence of the book… I’m in deep now.

Listening to these bc finishing onyx storm I realized I was so lost.

Things are making more sense already and I think Brennans lover who was tarins old rider became a vein and that’s why terror is so certain xadens soul is lost. Obvious that even in the first book jack was venin.

The ladies in the library who recommended me this book know whats up.

A WILD story to go into completely blind, and a WILD introduction to dramatic audiobook productions. Truely a movie in your mind… that you can tune into on your lunch break, or on the bike… I guess…

That said, I genuinely found the story really interesting and yes I am already partway through the second book (of course as an audiobook by the same production cast).

The actual book? Not good. The graphic audiobook? Not too bad honestly. It certainly made the whole experience more tolerable.

If you want a book where the main character just goes to gym class for 90% of it, then this is the one for you!! And if you've ever wished characters would have to go through an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course, then you get that here as well!! Don't think about how stupid it is because the author really wants you to think it's cool!!!

Also I really need authors to understand that making your main character go "oooohh myyyy god this man is soooOooOoOO HOTTTT!!!! I'm practically coming every time he looks at me!!1!1!" is not the way you write a romance. Violet is operating under the assumption that Xaden wants to kill her for a decent chunk of the book, but none of that matters to her because she wants to lick his feet. It's embarrassing.

For all I think the book is bad, it did have some elements that, if this had stronger editing, would really pull the book together. As it stands, though, trying to foreshadow the Real Villains with a just doesn't cut it. And while the romance is the main point of this book (though idk how it's supposed to be the main point in a, what, five book series? All following the same main character??), it wasn't enough to carry the whole book.

By the time the 50% mark rolls around, nothing has really changed for Violet. She's still going to school/gym class and playing with her dragons. Nothing has changed her worldview and she has no goals outside of "graduate" which is so basic and something should have happened earlier in the book to chance her goals. The story does have a greater overarching plot (the war), but it's hardly ever mentioned and I was never sure as to why the way was happening in the first place or why so many people felt so patriotic that the entire population of the country just throws themselves into the war effort.

We don't learn until approximately the last 90%+ that Actually, the Griffon Rider Country . This is interesting! And it should have been introduced much sooner! Violet should have realized something was going on that she and the other students, hell the whole country, wasn't being told about, but no. Getting dicked down and going to gym class were more important.

As for the dragons, I'm going to be honest here and say I have no idea why the dragons are even involved in this war. They are people with their own language and society, yet they are treated like pets. What made the dragons decide it was best to let tiny little humans ride and control them when they can just go off and do whatever? Is part of the reason that the dragons can't access magic without humans? I know humans can't use magic without a magical creature, but what about the other way around? I literally don't know, and I can't remember if it was explained, but it still feels stupid.

Also, why don't all dragon riders use saddles? I can get why a person wouldn't want a saddle strapped to their back so some dumb human can hang on, but the author doesn't really treat the dragons like people but more like talking dogs.

I will say this book did have an interesting reveal at the end. Like I said, if the editing process had been stronger and, let's be honest, longer, I think this book would have been a lot better. While I've heard even from some fans that book 2 is bad, I do want to read it to see what happens next and understand why this is the hot new series that people are losing their minds over.

I could not finish this.
I wanted to so bad. I tried SO hard. I listened to part 1 which was 8 hours and I just couldn't get into it. At all. All I got from all of that investment was that it was basically like the Hunger Games but with Dragons. I felt no connection to any of the characters, felt no chemistry between any of the characters, and felt like it just dragged on and on and onnnnnnnn. It seemed very immature and more of a YA book to me. I am just not a fantasy book kinda girl, but I wanted to give this a shot since it's so popular. It was SO boring to me, overrated and such a slow story line... I just know that it's not my style so I didn't bother listening to the remaining 9 hours of Part 2. :(

I truly cannot say enough good things about this book. The world building and dragon-rider bonds were immaculate. The romance was *chefs kiss*. The character arc of Violet was beautifully designed and very relatable. I completely understand why this book has sold out everywhere. I would recommend to anyone who loves fantasy romance!

The third read was even more satisfying, honestly. I need this book injected into my veins. The foreshadowing is honestly impressive when you come back to the first book.

I had heard so much about this series at the beginning of the year and decided to give it a shot. My first read through was via audiobook. The only complaints I had for this book were the voice actress who read for the audiobook and how pathetic Violet was in the first half of the book. Like, yes we get it, you’re small and fragile and are really smart and are hated by your mother.
Once I got past those barriers though, I was in love with the book. From the characters, to the plot and the writing style, I was so immersed. Also, Xaden 🫶

She's not a bad writer but it did feel like it was a modge-podge of popular fantasy/dystopian/romance tropes that she had a checklist to complete in order to submit the book for publishing. Sadly I didn't feel connected to any of the characters, which is usually what gets me through cheesy books. (and I love cheesy books!)
I was surprised by the chronic illness/pain rep being better than I expected.

I VASTLY Misjudged this book. I thought it was going to just be hype and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the world that this book built and its protagonist Violet! While there is a lot of death, it’s not super graphic. The book is really hard to put down through all the twists and turns of adventure, truth and romance…AND THE ENDING TWIST! Amazing all around and can’t wait to read the next book!

Violet is no better than me bc i too want to be telepathically mindf*cked by a beautiful buff tatted 6'4 brownskin brooding man who's supposed to hate me in midst of a war.

3.5 stars. I expected a lot more from this book based on all the 5 star ratings on goodreads . I thought the author hit you over the head with all the romance foreshadowing, and use of many cliches. It seemed like certain aspects were borrowed from other books too. I listened to the abridged audio version with the full cast recording, which I really enjoyed.

The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥🐉
I would like to first make a huge shoutout to the Graphic Audiobook production and their cast that is behind this book. I am not sure if I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if it wasn't for them even though honestly the book itself is fire!! I haven't listened to a book so intently in ages I was quite literally stuck into reading it 24/7 any task long forgotten by all the side effects and the fantastic voices. I am not sure exactly how to contain my feelings about it.
I thought I would hate it hence why it took me so long to read it but it was surprisingly good and realistic! It seems that many people find fiery and well horny characters unrealistic and pain to read but it was actually great XD I love Violet with my whole heart I rarely see that happening wicked and down to earth and very witty catching on things very quick. For the first few chapters it felt a touch annoying but then she really got into the spirit of a rider and this was character development I wish to see more - embracing your true nature. Xaden was stereotypical yet glorious and I do love him a lot I see the hype i have joined the hype myself XD and all the rest characters have my heart T^T I love the dragons so so much and the dynamic is priceless ❤️‍🔥
To be honest I was mildly disappointed by the extra chapters from Xaden's POV maybe because despite being secretive and distant he is still pretty honest whenever he speaks to Violence *wink* so his chapters felt like he wasn't adding too much to it pfhahah but listening to his VA was a treat regardless 🤤
I did know a few spoilers here and there for what was going to happen all the plot twists but honestly it made my ride slightly easier so I am not complaining (yeah eyeing the ending of third book i know I got coming my way) the world is just as immersive anyway.

And as always your psychological and spiritual guide of fiction books :3
As I said the characters were pretty honest about how they felt which was truly fresh air. To see a FMC talking so openly about her sexual desires is something i wish to see more especially in smutty books it makes sense to be open to their experiences you can't tell me you can just read smut but *Oooooh nooo* when she is openly talking about it hahah so this is something fantastic as well as her smart mind figuring out how to make it work. And as I said even MMC was pretty honest with himself I can't wait for the yearning next book! I wish I could see more of the rest of the characters explore their psychology tho certain characters did stick 🥺
Now from spiritual aspect I have a bit more to say. I am not sure if the author is spiritual or not but the whole is something I am hands down impressed by how smooth and close to reality is and I always bow my hat 🎩 to anyone capable of representing even a piece of that in their fictional works.
I was craving dragons - gave me the best ones. Overall great ride!! Iron flame next! 🔥
