It's impossible for me to objectively rate this book due to my personal feelings for Fredrika Runeberg. She's my go to answer for every "which historical figure would you invite to dinner" question.
The short-stories and texts in this collection are sometimes fragmented and of varying depth and quality, but in the back of my mind I always have Fredrika's limited possibilities to develop her craft in Finland during the 19th century and her lifelong insecurity and doubt in her abilities which she writes more about in her biography.
Underneath the stories there is also a sense of something being repressed or downplayed, like she is not willing or daring to express too controversial opinions.
What further adds to the collection are the many stories from different part of the world. Fredrika not only gives voice to these many different women but she also writes about them using mainly facts and knowledge she gained from reading travel journals rather than the moral judgements based on white supremacy used by many of her contemporaries. While this by no means make her perfect it still makes her a forerunner of her time.
