Running from death seemed unnatural to the Mexica High Priestess Tomantzin, but run she does.

She escapes to the jungle after witnessing her father's murder amidst a power struggle within the Mexica Empire and fears for her life. Instead of finding refuge in the jaguar's land, she falls into the hands of glimmering gods in search for glory and gold. With her nation already

A great book that has characters that have realistic depth and conflicted feelings. Lauren Lee Merewether captures a time of conflict with enough historical and cultural background that you can imagine Toma is every bit as historical as Pocahontas. You will have trouble putting the book down as you wonder what challenges Toma will face next.

There are a couple of places where the text might be unclear in the first reading, but the overall narrative makes up for it.

Great novel, full of twists and turns. There were many unpredictable elements in the story of Toma and her struggle to choose among saving her people, seeking vengeance, and abandoning her old life for love. Some of the language is distracting, but I did discover a nice glossary in the back that can help if you get confused.

For me, the first chapter of Blood of Toma by Lauren Lee Merewether was hard to read because of the strange indigenous names in ancient Mexico. I am so glad that I continued to read this amazing story. It is well written, has in-depth character development, and a strong female protagonist.

The High Priestess Tomatzin (Toma) witnesses betrayal, the killing for her father, captivity by men she believes are the silver gods, one of which (Arrio) she falls in love with, the manipulation by a man she c

Toma has known her whole life that when she is older she will be sacrificed so that her village can live in peace for 50 years and the Gods will be satisfied. But after her father, the ruler, is assassinated, she escapes to the jungle. There she finds explorers from Europe. Unbeknownst to Toma, they want all the gold in her city- and more. Will she be able to save her people and overthrow her father's assassin? Or will she fall in love with one of the explorers and let them have all her villages ...more

Blood of Toma by Lauren Lee Merewether

Blood of Toma by Lauren Lee Merewether introduces us to the High Priestess Tomantzin(Toma), who is going to be a sacrifice to the Gods so the Gods will look down favorably on her people and give them a good crop season. However, Toma doesn’t realize that a friend of the family is causing problems within the Mexican Empire so he can become head of the Empire.

After Toma over hears a conversation that they want to kill her and her father, she witnesses her
