Honey Trap

Rate this book
Little Black Dress has fallen head over heels in love with the one and only Julie Cohen - and when you pick up one of her clever, funny and oh-so-sexy romances, you'll know why...Private investigator Sophie Tennant has realised knowing everyone's dirty little secrets isn't that much fun. Retraining as an aromatherapist should rebalance her karma -- or so she thinks, until she goes on tour as resident de-stresser with a rock band whose moody, magnetic frontman Dominick Steele is none other than her very first honey trap. Yes, the man she pretended to seduce in order to shop the evidence to his broken-hearted wife, spelling the end of their marriage. Dominic may be a reformed character these days, but Sophie hasn't forgotten the games he used to play! and he certainly remembers Sophie. A little bit too well!

I found the translated book last year, and read it without high expectation. But it turns out to be one of my favorite. Thanks to Qwerty, the Indonesian publisher to introduce this awesome book for Indonesian reader. Actually, it's a bit hard for us to get books from UK, so I'm glad I found it here. Lately, I found the original copy, re-read and love it even better.

Sophie Tennant has been running her private investigator business for 7 years. With her experiences in police department she was very good in this field. She liked to locate missing persons, collecting evidences, helped her client to solve special cases. Unfortunately, the most cases in her file were Infidelity Investigation. With her beautiful face and fine figure, her clients (mainly suspicious wives), need her to find out what their husband has been up to, and sadly it used to be a dirty cases.
Disgusted, Sophie decided to be far away from dirty secrets and started her new business as an aromatherapist in a small town. Then one day, Max De Milo, an eighties rock band guitarist asked her to join him on the road as a healing hand. Recently, Max tried to re-form his band and will be on the road tour promotion. On the recent sinking business Sophie decided to accept the engagement.
Unfortunately, she has to be on the road with Dominique Steele, the last person she wants to meet and her weakness, the only victim she got that could make her distracted.
5 years ago, Dominique was a brilliant famous rock star. He was the lead singer, main songwriter, played bass, guitar and keyboard as well. He's gorgeous, charming, sexy, hot, and his wive didn't believe him. She asked Sophie to set a honey trap to gather evidences to charge a divorce. Despite their strong chemistry, Sophie took what she needed, and put Dom's marriage and career on wreck.
Now they have to be together for 7 weeks. Despite their irritation to each other, the old chemistry is still so powerful. Sophie find a new Dominique that quite attracted. Despite her lack of faith, she can't resist his charm, and their 'road only' relationship is quite interesting. But an unsatisfied ex-client seems to scrutiny her and threathened her safety.

Sophie is a smart and independent woman. Her childhood history made her distrustful. She's strong and sweet, very likeable character. When she set her honey trap job, she wore thick make up and sexy outfit and she called it her uniform. She has never thought herself beautiful, she believe the uniform did the magic trick on her victims and she really hate herself on those image. But on their first meet Dom could figured her out. He once said there's someone else inside all this sexiness, someone who's not even sure that she's beautiful.

Dom is hired on the oldies rock band to fill bass player position. After his divorce he was sucked in alcohol and his drinking problem destroy his famous band. Recently he has been sober, jobless and broke. So he took the job. Surprisingly, on this tour he find back his passion on music which has been lost in the past. He knows Venusian is not his band, so on this tour he always tried to be unnoticed. But with his height, dangerous dark profile, and his talent, he will always be a star.

I like Sophie. She is quiet, observant and always pull herself from crowd. But when she do her investigation job, it's kind of cool. She knows where to start, she knows the contacts, she's great with cyber world investigation. She's good to be unnoticed when following her victims. She's small, slender but strong. She's fearless and capable enough on her self defence. She's pretty good also as an aromatherapist. I like how she mix oils, creating scents for healing bodies. It seems that she was always good in every job she'd done. Oh, the funny thing is people tend to spill their secrets to her, even when she didn't want to hear any and prefered to avoid it.

I also like the re-formed Dom. He was a bad boy tried to be good man. I like how he always put himself on low profile, to be blend with the background crews. I like how he tease Sophie, but also respect her. I think he was a bit afraid of her because of their past history where he's gone to Sophie's trap while he was very attracted to her. I like how he always admitted himself as a bad guy while actually there are lots of good sides of him.

There are still a lot of things I like on both characters, but mainly the romance is pretty awesome. It's fun and far from cheesy. I love this book very much and would strongly recommend it to all romance reader.

[ WARNING : SPOILER ALERT ]

It's standard chick-lit and with the LBD series you know what you're getting!
Sophie is a private detective who ends up doing mainly honey trap work. She hates it, it's not her style and a particular case goes bad and the guy tries to attack her. (Not a fluffy start...but it goes a bit softer from here!) She decides to change career and goes into aromatherapy massages in another part of the country. Life isn't so great, but she gets an offer out of the blue to be therapist to an aging eighties rock band who are having a revival tour. Due to ongoing aggro and disillusionment, she agrees and hitches herself to the tour bus.
Dominick was famous but his alcoholism led him to throwing it all away. Still gorgeous, but almost destitute he's offered the chance to joining the tour as a bassist to fill in for the original guy. With few options available he agrees. However Sophie and Dominick have met several years before...he was her first honey trap. The only problem is if it hadn't been a job, she'd have loved it to go further.
So there's the premise for a lot of strife, arguments and finally getting together. Sling in someone trying to kill Sophie and that about covers it.
It's okay, not great, but I do feel I'm not really the target audience for LBD any more, so maybe this is a little unfair. I found both main characters annoying in that they had too many hang ups and general neediness...neither of them were fleshed out and they weren't particularly likable. Another irritation was the constant reminders that they were both unbelievably, stunningly gorgeous. There were no surprises in how it all turned out - I'm sure all readers would have worked out the whodunit after the first couple of chapters too.
A quick read, not badly written, but instantly forgettable.

I have been meaning to read this book for awhile, however it wasn't until I went on a writing course led by the author that I finally picked it up. I would like to say on record, that my decision to read this book wasn't influenced in any way by this post - http://www.julie-cohen.com/blog/2008/...
There is nothing on record about my thoughts on Patrick Dempsey what so ever. *coughs* Moving on to the book!
I read this book practically in one afternoon as Mr Steele accompanied me on my journey to London and back last week. This book is pure escapism! I was quite lost in my own little world while reading this book. I was completely swept away by the story that easily blended suspense with romance.
Within the first paragraph you are hooked, as you try to work out how Sophie would know her blind date was a scumbag, definitely creating a page turning tale that must be finished. There are scenes of a sexual nature involved, so probably not one to leave out and about around the kids.
Sophie, the main character, has issues with trust. As her story unravels you understand why she decided to take the career moves she did. Her issues with trust are only strengthened when she tries to resist the charms of Dominick Steele, who in her eyes, epitomises everything she hates in a man who appears at first glance to be a habitual cheater. The story follows them both as they cope with situations that escalate out of their control, as they try and get past the issue of trust.
The book has a real 80's feel to it, as Sophie goes on tour with an old band, making a huge comeback and I found myself feeling quite nostalgic for my Wham days!
If you grew up loving books such as Imogen and Olivia by Jilly Cooper, then you will truly love this story. It was spine tingling and moreish!

I didn't like this book. The "hero" meets the heroine when he's a married rock star sleeping around. All i could think was - STIs!!!

DUMB. DUMB. DUMB. SO DUMB IT HURTS.
description
The plot would've been salvageable if the chemistry between the characters was built up in a measured way. But the heroine just lacked anything interesting about her. But she's a PI who doesn't like short men even though she's a midget.

JUST SHUT UP. YOU'RE STUPID.
description

The male protagonist sounded good - the ex rock star - tall, dark handsome but reformed. A lot of potential there. But again - it just didn't work due to the heroine. The subplots were awful.

Also, what bugged me was that the hero was above 6 foot and the heroine was about 5 foot but they apparently could dance together with her reaching his chin or ear level or something. Not possible even with heels.
description

The best books so far that I've read of Julie Cohen's is Girl From Mars - the friendship described there was really touching. Cohen really knew how to articulate the emotional ties one has with one's friends and the difficulties of letting go and striking a balance. For a chick lit - really well written.

The other book that I liked was Sprit Weak, Flesh Willing. But here - not much depth but loads of chemistry. Didn't like the ending, it seemed rushed. But the chemistry had built up really well.

Beli 10.000an di Jakarta Bookfair. Biasa ya, kalo ke JBF selalu dan selalu kalap karna harga, jadi udah sering banget beli buku yang ga bagus-bagus amat tapi sayang dibuang, akibatnya menuh-menuhin rak buku. Honey Trap saya dapet dari anjungannya penerbit-yang-tidak-terkenal. Harganya kisaran 5-15ribu aja dannnnnn saya milih buku "hanya" berdasar warna dan covernya yang cute. Mau ga dibeli kok sayang amat cuma dilewatin, hahahahaha *super impulsif*

Begitu dibaca ternyataaaaaaaa...BAGUS!!!

Oh, i love Sophie Tenant. Mungkin bisa dilanjutin kisah sophienya kakaaa?

Once again, Julie Cohen has blown me away with an awesome story!

What a start to a story, with the heroine being slap-bang in the middle of one of her honey traps. A honey trap that goes slightly awry causing her to rethink her entire life. And then to have her reunited with one of her past honey traps - one that she has never been able to forget - is simply brilliant.

A change for other Julie Cohen books, this one actually included the hero's POV, which worked perfectly; he is such a complex character, I couldn't get enough of him.

I loved every second of the rock and roll background described - it was done with relish and a little touch of cliché that made it really stand out.

The heroine is a wonderful character, really well developed with real issues and emotions. She changed and grew as the story progressed. Very satisfying to read.

The story flows easily, and is sexy and fun with a little bit of mystery thrown in for good measure. I couldn't put it down.

Brilliant! Recommended.

Review - The deep emotional levels explored around the characters of Dominick and Sophie really made the book good. Cohen explores the recesses of alcoholism, infidelity, sex, drugs and attempted murder. The idea of honey trapping intrigued me and is ultimately what made me pick up the book. I think Cohen could have explored the idea a little more, but the background was interesting and the rock band tour added an extra dimension with the media interest and observing what group dynamics were really like (though how real it is can obviously be debated). The book isn't as dark as all that makes it sound. It is essentially a love story which takes place with all of that in the background.
