Brian Michael Bendis

A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

I thoroughly enjoyed this compendium. While there were definitely stronger and weaker sections throughout, I found the overall series to be compelling and well worth the read. The collection includes three main runs presented in this order: Sam and Twitch, Sam and Twitch: Case Files, and Sam and Twitch: The Writer. Interestingly, that order also reflects how I would rank them in terms of strength.
The original Sam and Twitch run was outstanding. From the very beginning, it kept me on the edge of my seat with its dark, intense storytelling, both metaphorically and visually. The atmosphere was gritty and unsettling in the best possible way, and it pulled me into the world immediately. What impressed me most was how effectively the story made me care about Sam and Twitch despite having no prior familiarity with the characters. Their personalities and dynamic were developed so naturally that I quickly became invested in them as detectives and as people. The pacing felt tight and deliberate, and the story unfolded in a way that kept the tension building from issue to issue. The artwork in this section was also excellent. It had a slightly cartoony style, but never in a way that felt out of place. Instead, it complemented the tone of the story and helped create a distinctive visual identity.
The second run, Sam and Twitch: Case Files, was still enjoyable, but I did notice a drop in the overall strength of the storytelling. Some of the story arcs were very engaging, while others felt more average and did not connect with me as strongly. That is not necessarily a flaw in itself, since not every storyline will resonate equally with every reader, but the inconsistency was noticeable compared to the first run. Despite that, it remained a solid series overall. The artwork started off strong here as well, but over time I felt the quality declined somewhat. Among the arcs in this section, the vampire storyline stood out as the weakest for me.
The final section, the four-issue run Sam and Twitch: The Writer, was by far the weakest part of the compendium. I frequently found my attention drifting while reading it. The dialogue felt overly dense and drawn out, often continuing longer than necessary. On top of that, the lettering made the reading experience more difficult than it should have been. The text was very small, and the white lettering often blended into the snowy or lightly colored backgrounds, making it frustrating to follow the conversations.
Even with the weaker final section, the first 52 issues of this collection were excellent, and that alone makes the compendium worthwhile. While ending on a weaker note might affect the overall impression for some readers, I still consider the experience a success overall. I have already recommended this book to others and would continue to do so.
