Emma Griffin is a famed FBI agent in her field. When she is called to a production set to investigate several missing actors and actresses, an oppressive, venomous tension greets her upon arrival.
With multiple suspects and countless conflicts in play, both the film and the case have turned into a nonstop action-packed drama, laced with nuclear-level toxicity.
While the independent director loses his marbles at every turn, the rest of the crew seems to have too many screws loose. This dream project from the past might be a nightmare in the making, one that might unearth ghosts full of unintended consequences.
Hidden deaths, blackmail, and a project that was doomed from inception, it will take every ounce of FBI Agent Emma Griffin’s resolve to see through the acts and uncover the truths behind this insidious case.
Wicked intentions bring consequences beyond the grave. This last scene may be the act that ends a nefarious production once and for all. Evil has a cost, and Emma Griffin will make them all pay the ultimate price.
I am finding the writing of the books a bit frustrating. I have loved Emma and Dean and Xavier. But the story lines are getting too drawn out. I find myself losing interest. The books used to be such page turners for me. I hate writing a negative review, but I want more!!!
The last few Emma Griffin books have way to much filler! The stories get lost in all the excess descriptions and thoughts! This series has definitely gone downhill from what it was! Also, my pet peeve is for an author to leave a cliffhanger! If ur series is good, people will buy the next installment without being forced to!
Read 2025 - I give this 3.5 stars. Not super gripping but I do want to know what happens next with Emma/ Xavier/ The Game Master and then how the movie set murders end.
In this book, we start with Emma and the Game Master picking back up. With a lot of investigative work, Emma tracks down Denise Stein - who was chosen by the Game Master because she has a big secret, which is that when she travels, she actually runs a business for men to basically purchase time to spend with a woman where they can do whatever as long as it's paid. Her son and daughter in law have no idea that's what she does when she's really been going on vacation. She even offers herself for these services.
But Emma saves Denise while Denise is doing a challenge for the Game Master - Emma gets her to the hospital safely and then puts her in protective custody. Emma is fully aware that the Game Master probably knows what she did but she's not worried.
While working the Game Master case, she is called by a woman named Skye who was around during the Lakyn Monroe case - that's where Emma met Xavier. But Skye calls her and tells her she's been brought in for murder. So Emma goes to her and finds out that Skye is working on this movie production with the producer, Howard Shade. Ten years prior, another producer, Astor Barrett, bought this ranch on a huge lot of land. He was shooting a very low budget horror movie on this ranch with some cast and crew. During the production - the main actor, James Delaney, goes missing after having an argument with Astor about the movie. He was never found and Astor had an alibi. Astor still put out the movie though and there have been theories about James and the ranch over the years.
Ten years later, Howard Shade is obsessed with Astor and his movie. So, he gets permission from Astor (since he still owns the ranch) to shoot another horror movie at the same ranch. During Howard's production though, Howard is found murdered - by Skye, kneeling next to the body, covered in Howard's blood, and holding the murder weapon (a knife). She's then discovered by a crew member and bolts. That is why is she brought in under suspicion of murder. Emma starts investigating Howard's murder. After a few days, she goes down into the basement of the ranch and discovers a prop that is a corpse covered in wax but Emma soon realizes it's not a prop. It's a real person that Howard either knowingly or unknowingly covered in wax to use has a prop for the movie.
Emma wants to dig around the property to see if any of the theories over the years are accurate about other bodies being buried on the property. But we don't know the identity of the corpse covered in wax by the end of the book - my guess is it's James but we don't know. By the end of the book. the body in wax is found, other body parts are being dug up on the property by a forensics team and Maria (a cast member from both productions) is dead. So I'm sure that case will wrap up in the next book - Emma wants to solve it.
By the end of the book with the Game Master case - the Game Master contacts Emma directly telling her she shouldn't have intervened with his players (saving Denise and putting a lot of people in protective custody). Emma tells him to focus on her, make her a player and leave everyone else alone. He gives her a first challenge that ends with her getting into a car crash and blacking out. When she comes to, she's blindfolded and tied up. I'm assuming who is the Game Master, comes up to her and tells her he doesn't want her, he actually wants Xavier. And the book ends.
I'm getting really tired and bored of the Game Master's case. I have completely lost track of all the players. Some are in protective custody (Denise, Baron, Paisley -- I don't remember who they are or what their challenges were) and some are dead (Mike Morris - who's body part is found in this book. And others are dead that I can't even remember). It's too much going on and too many people to keep track of but it seems like it might be coming to an end soon. He wants Xavier which hopefully we find that out in the next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Emma had to put so many people in safe houses. She got so upset with her father. She was right. That was interesting how two players were involved with each other. Howard was a sick man. You didn’t come right out and say it, but in order for it to be a true horror, James would have to be alive when the wax was poured over him. A.J. I had no idea you could go this dark. I’m glad Emma and Sam have such a loving relationship. Thanks for your books. I have to read your 35th now because of how you left this one.
I feel like I have been in a high speed car chase! this book is fast paced and there is something going on in every direction. Emma is juggling a few cases and I'm having a hard time keeping track of everyone. while working on a current case, a former case ends up dragging her into a whole new one, only this one is turning into more than she expected. I always feel off killer because there is so much going on, I don't know how Emma stands a chance of solving anything. This ends with such a cliffhanger but I need to catch my breath before the next installment.
AJ Rivers is the queen of cliff hangers! I got to the last page of this book, after all the twists and turns that came before it, and let out a loud "Nooooooo." Luckily, I know the next book will pick up right where this left off. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a little while for that book. It's like waiting for the next episode of your favorite TV show.
The Girl in the Last Scene(Emma Griffin FBI Mystery Book 34)
OMG!!!!!!!!! This book was amazing and very scary. Emma seems to get the strangest and scariest cases. She is still tracking " The Gamemaster" but now she is at a movie scene and things are just crazy, I can't wait to read the next book.
I have said it before. A. J. Rivers is my favorite author. This book was so good and at one point I wondered how it could intertwine, but this author is a master. I cannot wait for the next book even though I will hate to miss Emma and Xavier and Dean and Sam !
This has been one of the best Emma Griffin books. I can't wait to read the final book although I hate o see this series end. This has Ben my number one series. I highly recommend this book and series. Love this series.
A.J. Rivers is most definitely the queen of suspense!
I’m screaming over here! What was Emma thinking?! I will be on pins and needles until the next book! The farmhouse just keeps getting weirder with all the things going on, and I’m ready to find out those answers too.
This one was a curve and a half, never has one ended with not being solved. OMG, hurry and get the next one out. Need to read it! I have read all of them including Dean, Ava, and the Pines. Need another one now.
It’s annoying to me that the stories continue to go on book after book. I’m about done reading anything from the author. All her books carry over 2-3 books later and it’s the same
A story that has you going from the beginning to get innocent people away from the one person who wants them dead, just for fun! You believe one thing , then the tables turn on you.
I have read all the Emma Griffin books so far and really enjoy them. However, this one is not quite what I'm used to. There is always a little something left dangling so you can't wait for the next book. In this book nothing was solved.
Tumultuous, suspenseful, surprising, this book creates more questions than it answers. It's a great read and will leave you clamoring for more Emma Griffin!
WOW! Do not miss this one! It's a heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that will have you turning pages long into the night! This one was so good!
I really feel like the entire story was there written to give us something to take up space until the last 2 chapters……..GASP (shock) WHAT???? Downloads book 35.
