Nasceu em 1957, em São Paulo. É professora titular no Departamento de Antropologia da USP. Seu livro As barbas do imperador - D. Pedro II, um monarca nos trópicos ganhou o prêmio Jabuti Livro do Ano, em 1999. Além deste, publicou também: O espetáculo das raças, O sol do Brasil (prêmio Jabuti de melhor biografia, 2009), D. João carioca - história em quadrinhos sobre a chegada da corte portuguesa ao Brasil, em coautoria com Spacca -, entre outros livros.

Very interesting book about the introduction and incorporation of 19th century scientific racism to Brazil. For those people studying modern Brazilian history, the book is essential for understanding the long trajectory of the ideas of the "racial democracy" concept in Brazil.

Lilia Moritz Schwarcz is an important Brazilian historian, and while I don't think the central thesis of The Spectacle of the Races -- that is, the claim that Brazilian elites selectively imported European concepts of evolution and Social Darwinism in their attempt to define themselves as a nation -- is new, I do believe Schwarcz parcels the information in a way that reveals the nuances of different intellectual elites' priorities. It's a solid introduction to the intellectual currents that defined Brazil in the late 19th Century, and certainly a forerunner to newer books on similar subjects by Jens Andermann and James Green. However, I was disappointed that Schwarcz doesn't really address one of the key words in her title, "Spectacle," except in passing, particularly because it was the promise of learning more about how races were paraded that drew me to the book in the first place.
