A standout, erudite commentary within the corpus of literature on the Gospel of John which as a result hasn't dated much. Barrett is essential particularly for his attention to the grammatical aspects of the text.

Note that this is a commentary on the Greek text, and it is detailed and advanced. Knowledge of Koine Greek is necessary to get the most benefit from Barrett's work.

Barrett clearly is quite a Greek scholar and he was helpful with text criticism. However, the commentary came across as nearsighted in a couple of ways. He made some slights at the literary style, and overall he seemed weak on biblical theology.

The best technical treatment of John's gospel. His mastery of the Greek text is insightful.
