Unmaking Imperial Russia: Mykhailo Hrushevsky and the Writing of Ukrainian History

From the eighteenth century until its collapse in 1917, Imperial Russia - as distinct from Muscovite Russia before it and Soviet Russia after it - officially held that the Russian nation consisted of three branches: Great Russian, Little Russian (Ukrainian), and White Russian (Belarusian). After the 1917 revolution, this view was discredited by many leading scholars, politicians, and cultural figures, but none were more intimately involved in the dismantling of the old imperial identity and its historical narrative than the eminent Ukrainian historian Mykhailo Hrushevsky (1866-1934).

Hrushevsky took an active part in the work of Ukrainian scholarly, cultural, and political organizations and became the first head of the independent Ukrainian state in 1918. Serhii Plokhy's "Unmaking Imperial Russia" examines Hrushevsky's construction of a new historical paradigm that brought about the nationalization of the Ukrainian past and established Ukrainian history as a separate field of study. By showing how the 'all-Russian' historical paradigm was challenged by the Ukrainian national project, Plokhy provides the indispensable background for understanding the current state of relations between Ukraine and Russia.

About the author

Serhii Plokhy is a Ukrainian and American historian. Plokhy is currently the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History and Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, where he was also named Walter Channing Cabot Fellow in 2013. A leading authority on Eastern Europe, he has lived and taught in Ukraine, Canada, and the United States. He has published extensively in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. For three successive years (2002-2005) his books won first prize of the American Association for Ukrainian Studies.

Нарешті я все відклала і дочитала цю чудову книгу! Загалом, це моє перше знайомство з жанром інтелектуальної біографії - дуже круто! Так цікаво описано не просто події з життя, але й становлення та еволюцію ідей, оцінок, погдядів, причому у широкому контексті (суспільно-політичні обставини, панівний академічний та соціальний дискурс, інші тогочасні публікації). Чудово проаналізовано твори Грушевського та реакції, які вони спричиняли. Також, не те щоб здивувала, але... система функціонування радянської "критики" (особливо після 1929 року - це просто жах - коли кожен, аби убезпечити себе і свою кар'єру, писав під виглядом "рецензій" різну партійно-правильну гидоту, повну вигадок і перекручування на адресу Грушевського).

Потужна праця гарвардського професора стала не ще одною книгою про батька української історії. А все ж таки кардинально іншою в якій Плохій по-перше зображує Грушевського зовсім в інших фокусах, можливо він не відходить радикально від канону, але і це по-друге як на мене головним здобутком цієї праці є те, що Михайло Грушевский постає тут невіддільно від своєї наукової і суспільної праці. Автор не дає нам відповіді на всі питання, але він ставить правильні питання.

A difficult read about a renowned Ukrainian historian, this book goes into great detail about how the written and "official" history of Ukraine was handled both before and after the Bolshevik revolution. A lot of names mentioned of other historians/academics/intellectuals etc. A very worthy read about a great nation and people and those who strove to make people remember her! The author Serhii Plokhy is a well renowned Ukrainian expert at Harvard, his other works are worth checking out as well.
