None of my friends will ever discuss this book with me but it’s super interesting for any amateur painter interested in the evolution of international gothic into baroque paintings. Steer goes into great detail about what set each painter apart from others, where their strengths were, and how the world around them influenced their painting style.

Read prior to a visit to Venice, I found this a very enthusiastic and opinionated short history of Venetian painting.
Part of the wide ranging Thames and Hudson World of Art series, the book is dated by the number of black and white and small size of illustrations, but the choice of works and descriptions are excellent.
