Ketone Power: Superfuel for Optimal Mental Health and Ultimate Physical Performance

Rate this book
In Ketone Power, Cristi Vlad, self-experimenter and avid researcher outlines a common denominator in terms of nutrition, health, and physical performance. After all, human DNA is 99% exactly the same. So, there should be a prescription (Rx) that works for the majority of us.
Cristi himself, fed up with not being able to lose the last few pounds of his belly fat, has started studying and experimenting with ketogenic nutrition and ketosis.
Ketosis is the metabolic state where your body uses fat and ketone bodies (by-products of fat) as the main source of fuel and it is achieved by drastically eliminating sugar from the diet. Long-term constant ketosis leads to keto-adaptation.
Keto-adaptation brought various improvements in Cristi Vlad's existence, such as: fat loss, elimination of hunger, elimination of cravings for high-carbohydrate foods, improved mental performance, ultra-high energy levels, less sleep required per night, better sleep, enhanced endurance and strength training output, and probably the most important: ability to eat chocolate every day.

In Ketone Power, Cristi Vlad, inspired by his mentors and armed with extensive research and personal experience outlines:

1. How he lost 10 pounds of fat in 2 months eating 70% of his calories from fat and consuming 2,000-3,000 kcals per day. His exercising routine was reduced from 5-6 times/week to 1-2 times/week. Before/after photos are included.

2. How the human body works differently when running on a fat metabolism compared to a carbohydrate metabolism (that which most of the people are in).

3. How his 2 month experiment became his new lifestyle due to the benefits of keto-adaptation.

4. How ketogenic nutrition is a powerful therapeutic approach to diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and other health issues.

5. Protocols for strength training and endurance training.

6. His shopping list and the foods he consumes daily to support keto-adaptation. Fat-bombs are included.

7. His virtual academy consisting of mentors, websites, courses, MOOC sites, and Youtube channels all of which helped him achieve knowledge on ketogenic nutrition and human biochemistry.

All of what Cristi Vlad did and keeps doing does not include fancy and expensive gadgets or pockets full of cash. It only requires willingness to improve one's existence and enjoy life every second that passes. You can do this by yourself as well. This book is the prescription.

So I've been super-interested lately in this idea of LCHF (low carb high fat). I am mostly curious about it from a scientific perspective. Let me tell you ~ this ain't the place for that. Most of the information is summary-level at best with lots of borrowing from other books that explain things better. While it was interesting to hear the author's personal perspective and journey, I thought the book was poorly edited and not very well organized. Save your time and money - there are better resources out there - The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz, for example, is much better and much less expensive!

Nothing groundbreaking but very practical and simple writing

Nothing groundbreaking but very practical and simple writing makes this an easy read. The author describes background of keto diets, their practical impact and how to implement them. A few good tips on leaving certain habits behind or replacing them. Otherwise on the keto front nothing new.

Ketone Power is an eye‑opening dive into the ketogenic way of fueling mind and body. If you’re curious about health beyond the usual sugar/‑carb narrative, this one’s got punch.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm familiar with the Ketogenic way of eating so I'm not a newbie regarding the topic. Lately there were so many books about Keto style and everybody wanted to give their share even when they didn't have knowledge or competence to do so. So I welcomed this one with my arms wide open.

Ketone Power is self-experiment book from an author who did his research before writing a book, which I found refreshing considering all the books on the market. His perspective and journey to Keto life style is interesting read and up to date. His references are from other Keto gurus like Phinney & Volek, Lustig, G. Taubes, P. Attia etc. I liked how it’s all put together and simplified which can be as much as a benefit as a downside.

He also listed lots of studies and researches that were made in the past and were suggested as further, more detailed reading. Maybe there were too many references to "this and that" study. On the other hand, some "facts" in the book are just opinion and self-experiment facts so we cannot take them as a scientific proof but they do give us some insight. Furthermore hormonal imbalance always plays its role so it’s important to distinguish between woman and man especially on a Keto diet. This is the topic that wasn't touched but I think it is of great importance.

I would suggest this book to everybody who is interested in more in depth understanding of a Keto lifestyle. It is also a great source of other literature regarding the topic.

Around 2 years ago I came back from my trip to the United States where I worked for an entire summer. When I arrived home (Europe) I was quite chubby due to the fact that i had not worked out at all in that period and also (as I realized later) my diet was a complete mess. When I came back home I was determined to get back in shape but actually I had no idea how! My diet was all over the place. And then I came across the author's blog and read his posts and the research he has done..and most importantly I've seen his results over time. Then I started to limit my carb intake lower and lower and I was literally losing around 1cm from my waist every week and I wasn't even in ketosis! I just stayed away from most of the sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods..and the results started to show. And then I read this book..which I recommend to anyone out there who is just starting out and doesn't know what to do to lose fat.

Another well written book by Mr Zot

This is the second book I've read by this author. Both were enlightening for me and great for anyone who wants to stay healthy (IMHO). Mr Zot comes through as a trustworthy person who never proclaims that he is the guru to follow. He shows you deep science and makes an effort for you to understand what he is saying, without talking down to you. The book is also greatly referenced for those who want to follow up. If you're at all interested in nutrition you should include this book.

Not a bad read.

I chose to read this book because I'm currently on a ketogenic diet. I've done a lot of research and experimented with various diets throughout the years with little success. I feel this book is a good place among many others for someone who isn't sure where to begin. I've had a lot of success with a ketogenic diet and wish the same for anyone else taking their first steps towards improving their health.

Nice easy read ... Excellent research summary!

The author does a great job of summarizing the research and pitfalls of these studies as well. I particularly enjoyed his talk of high weight training weekly or less! I'm going to try this...

Nothing really new and interesting in terms of the science of a Ketogenic diet, but it is a good introduction for those who are just beginning to look into it.
