If you were given the power to change the world – forever – would you dare to try?

I am Sue Blake and, against my better judgement, I’ve decided to take ownership of this messed-up world of ours. Here are my confessions…

What a very different work of art. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it, so I'll split my review into two parts, the Great and the Bizarre:

The Bizarre:

From the cover art, and the title of the book, and the description of it as being about cats, I thought this would be a whimsical, fun, fantasy-filled book about cats. I do like these kinds of books, although I try to read widely. Instead, this book had a lot of paranormal, and quite a bit of horror, actually. This could fit under the horror ge

What differentiates this from being pure fantasy is its sheer reality: Blake interprets urban modernity with a cynicism and ironic morbidity amidst homodiegetic realism that most can identify with, and which I definitely recognise. We are presented with a protagonist who is at the end of his tether, seemingly, jaded, and older than his thirty or so years; there is a suggestion of mental illness also as he prepares to commit suicide, but which is prevented by the bizarre interruption of an elderl ...more

"Feline Alchemy" is a very imaginative urban fantasy that is filled with surprising twists and turns. The book starts out with the narrator, Blake, planning his "exit strategy," and saving and inheriting two seemingly innocent kittens instead. Blake, a young curmudgeon, is petulant, self-centered and depressed . . . but that doesn't mean he's unlikable. I found myself caring about the character. His attitude on people? “I hate my neighbors by definition – how dare they live so close to me.”

Well, this was fun.

Reading it I felt a bit like the Japanese Emperor who wondered if he was dreaming he was a butterfly, or the other way around? The book’s author is Sue Blake and the hero has the same name. So is this book by a woman called Sue Blake writing about a man who is also called “Sue Blake”? Or was Sue Blake just a pen name all along? Not sure. And I doubt if it really matters.

What does matter is that this is the most original shape-shifting story I’ve read in years (and I’ve read A

Amidst descriptive writing that dazzles the senses we meet ‘Blake’ the Narrator and anti-hero of this dark tale. Humor mixes with horror, as the author moves inside and outside the minds of vividly drawn characters. The author pays great attention to details, and the style is original, influenced perhaps by Khafka, Poe and many others. Our narrator Blake works in an office where the LLM Corporation is managed by people like Mr. Exuding and Mr. Bandwith. The Corporate mentality is well parodied- ...more

I'm not quite sure how to categorize this novel. Some folks refer to it as fantasy, more specifically urban fantasy. I suppose it is, but to me it was so much more than that. It has elements of horror, satire and even a touch of romance. The narrator describes his points of view on life with such a cutting blend of honesty and wit that I didn't know whether to laugh or cry as I whipped through the pages. To me, that defines a great and original book.
I won't spoil the end, let alone the beginnin

Great writing! Interesting from beginning to end. A spectacular look into Blake's mind. Front seat view to extreme satire and great, witty, honest humor. The storyline is paced with plenty of room for tangents, almost like a stream of consciousness style writing. But holds, or comes back to reality after a moment or so. One of the better voices I've witnessed in writing. Even when the storyline lacks, the voice of the author, and great descriptive writing ability takes over. The idea in general ...more
