Leigh's back in this sixth installment of the Leigh Koslow Mysteries.
Hapless advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow, who was last seen joyfully announcing to her politician husband that she was pregnant, is now a middle-aged mom who is more than happy to leave the macabre pandemonium of her thirties behind. Unfortunately, Leigh's killer karma hasn't really deserted her; it's only been biding its time.
When an innocent walk in the woods with her dog turns up a corpse, Leigh begins to get worried. It's bad enough that the victim is a client of her agency. It's even worse that he's the same unscrupulous real estate developer who's been conniving to bulldoze her aunt Bess' homestead. And it would be a whole lot better for everyone in Leigh's family if her cousin Cara's husband hadn't brawled with the man in front of a church full of witnesses an hour before the murder. But fate is what it is, and as Leigh's beleaguered friend, Detective Maura Polanski, sets out once again to save the Koslow clan from self-destruction, the women face their toughest battle yet, because not only has Leigh failed to outgrow her inborn talent for trouble, she's bestowed it on the next generation.
No matter the genre, USA-Today bestselling novelist and playwright Edie Claire strives to infuse all her writing with both warmth and humor. Her family-friendly Leigh Koslow cozy mystery series, a favorite of animal lovers that was originally published in 1999, was reborn in 2012 to become a Kindle Top-10 bestseller. Her romantic novels range from women’s fiction with romantic elements to a blend of romance and mystery, beginning with her traditionally published contemporaries, the award-winning Long Time Coming and Meant To Be, and continuing with her USA-Today bestselling Pacific Horizons series, whose characters follow the migration of the humpback whales to some of the most gorgeous locations on earth. In any Edie Claire work, the reader may be assured that while intrigue may beckon and tensions rise, love and happiness will always triumph in the end!
Edie has worked as a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a scientific/technical writer. A mother of three, she lives in Pennsylvania and aspires to become a snowbird.
The only reason I read this one is because it has a corgi in it. It was moderately amusing. I will read more of the series, because the corgi is true to life, totally motivated by good and cuddles.
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. I'd only read one other Leigh Kaslow books, 4 years ago, but got right back into the family of characters! Many plot twists, red herrings, and possible suspects.... and I didn't foresee the ending until it happened. I'd definitely read more by this author.
Okay, I have to admit what I liked most about this book was the corgi in the story — I’m a sucker for stumpy dogs.
But I also enjoyed the story itself. The characters were well drawn and interesting. The family dynamics made for some good dialogue and there were plenty of spunky female characters, including a very smart and independent elementary school age girl who was instrumental in solving the crime. We had the requisite villains, both male and female, who were as nasty as they needed to be to add drama and conflict.
Admittedly closer to a 3.5 than a full 4, this murder mystery kept my interest and entertained me. I recommend it for a good beach read.
Leigh is still finding dead bodies. Her children are already pre-teens and she is very protective of them; her very inquisitive daughter is far too interested in police work and bodies. While out walking her corgi, she finds the body of a well-dressed man near the church, who turns out to be a former client of her ad agency who is trying to buy up the land around the church and their homes. Unfortunately he also had a fight with her cousin Cara's husband Gil while trying to persuade the church board to sell. Leigh's mother gathers the women of the family to find someone to provide an alibi for Gil. Meanwhile, the nefarious Diana Saxton is doing her best to pin the murder on Gil, to get revenge for his spurning her advances and firing her. Lots of other suspects enter the picture, but with her police detective friend Maura, they eventually figure it out. Fairly riveting, as more suspects (and bodies) keep appearing.
Listening at work while doing brainless things -- typing, filing, etc. If you don't know this about me, I have a corgi named Buttercup. The corgi that introduced me to corgis was a five-year-old stray my kids dragged home and named Chewy over a decade ago. The corgi in this story is named Chewy. I'm hoping for a bit of corgi fluff to help pass the time.
Update 8/5: This narrator is so freaking irritating! Also, not enough corgi time. But mainly, I can't stand the narrator. I got about 1/4 in before being completely done with her grating voice, terrible accents, and weird intonation.
I think it should be a quick read but I'm not motivated to drive to the library and pick up a physical copy and the ebook isn't an option so...I'm over it.
Leigh is out walking her Corgi dog, Chewie when she happens on a man face down by the pond and once closer she knows he is dead. Leigh calls her friend and Homicide Detective Maura Polanski to report the body knowing Maura was not going to like this as Leigh has been on her reports too many times. Fortunately Leigh has an alibi this time as she was with Maura, Maura’s husband and her husband Warren when the murder occurred. The story goes on to solve the murder, you meet Leigh’s family who get involved in the solving and you also have Gil’s ex-employee trying to frame him for firing her after she made advances. This is a very good book, I liked the mystery, the family relationships and the relationships with the friends. This book can be read as a stand alone. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series.
Never Con A Corgi by Edie Claire book 6 This was my first book by Edie Claire and I truly enjoyed it. Partly I admit as I had a Corgi I loved very much so it was the title that drew me. I found the characters quite interesting and people I would like to know. Leigh Koslow and her family are not ones to be pushed around by a developer wanting to turn the land around them into a strip mall! Well he gets his just desserts and turns up dead found by Chewie the family corgi! Well done Chewie! I thoroughly enjoyed this well paced ride through the novel and intend to read another of Edie Claire’s books very soon! I bought this book and the review is entirely my own.
Interesting jump in the series, 10 years is quite a stretch. Leigh is a mother now and turning into her own mother as repeatedly mentioned by her friend Maura. She's still dumb enough to get herself in trouble, but also overly protective of her children, who don't seem to need the protecting. Interesting to see where they go from here.
It has been awhile since I read a book in this series. There are a lot of interesting characters and family dynamics and of course a few unsavory characters. Leigh's cousin's husband is a suspect so she and her family work to clear his name. It is hard to feel sorry for the murdered guy as he was a total jerk. The murderer ended up being the last person I would have suspected.
This book was a fun corgi although at times there were so many characters running around I really had to stay on my toes to keep everyone straight. The story was good and the characters awesome and the ending was a real surprise to me. Now I can't wait to read more from this really good cozy author.
This was the first book I listened to by the author. I enjoyed the mystery. However, there were so many sighs by the characters, throaty growls by characters, and very motile eyebrows by the characters that I found myself almost counting those distractions.
A complex murder mystery, with a calculating harridan throwing all manner of false clues and theories mixed with a secondary plot—that to the well attuned reader would have given the answer.
I love books about dogs and mysteries. Leigh stumbles across a dead body and her cousin’s husband is accused of killing him. The family works to clear his name. Rated PG
Kind of boring . Lots of interrelated characters. Lots of pets. LEIGH accidentally finds all kinds of murder and gets caught up in the fray. Accidentally solves it too - Brandon Lyle the bad developer trying to buy up everyone's property found shot.
The best ingredients for a really good story is children and dogs. This cozy mystery has both. It is a fun time, an easy read and a good story. Characters are believable and interesting. Keeps you on your toes, keeping up with the girls
This was enjoyable. Basically a soap opera/murder mystery with descriptions of a cute corgi thrown in. I got it as a free ebook and I only downloaded it because of the corgi, expecting it to be terrible. It exceeded my expectations. It was a quick escapist read.
This book started slowly, but picked up the pace as characters were added. There were a couple on interesting 'bad guys', which made it more interesting than some of the cozy mystery books. .. the real killer was a surprise! I enjoyed this quick read!
It took me forever to read this book. I wasn't find of the writing, not the characters. To me, the story didn't flow and seemed forced, with too many characters that had no real depth to them.
This book is a fast and fun read and I was captured by the title as I am owned body and soul by two corgis. Unfortunately not enough corgi in the story to be thoroughly charmed by the book; nevertheless, the book has a solid premise, relatable characters and a nice twist to the ending.
Book #6 - with a jump of 10 years from the previous storyline. Can be read without reading the previous books. Happy to read more adventures with Leigh and her family. A clever mystery and the reveal was a surprise to me.
Never Con a Corgi was a fun book to read, not only because I love dogs but because of the surprising happenings during the story. Without being gory or gross, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. Edie Claire writes a most entertaining story.
