Adrianne Fitzpatrick, a prolific contributor to EBD’s Chalet School series, has put together a gem of a collection of ‘add-on’ short stories that bring a fullness to the entire series. Her voice is very much in line with Elinor Brent-Dyer’s, and it is easy to believe that EBD could have written these. Often the stories expand upon an incident which EBD refers to in her original books but never had a chance to write herself. At the same time, the stories are interesting and original enough to please everyone interested in this genre. An excellent addition to any Chalet Series collection, and other EBD series as well. Like many GGBP books, there is extra information about the series and additional reading. Many of these individual short stories can be found in the GGBP reprint editions of EBD’s books.
1. The Gift—a story of Con Atherton’s 11th birthday, referred to in “A Head Girl’s Difficulties”, second book in EBD’s La Rochelle series. It is a CS adjacent book, as Con’s daughters will eventually attend the Chalet School. The story takes place in 1919, and Con has great plans for her birthday, but current events cause her sadness, until an expected arrival changes everything. 2. Snowbound—Occurs during the time of “The Rivals of the Chalet School” and how the frustrated girls get their fidgets out, so to speak, after being trapped inside by the weather. 3. All Things Work Together For Good—Occurs around the same time as “The Chalet School and Jo”. Robin and Stacie are in the San, and it is at this time that the idea for a Chalet School Annexe for sickly girls is begun. 4. Michief at the Annexe—takes place during “The Chalet School and the Linton’s”. Tired of unrelenting weather, the Annexe girls get antsy, and a very surprising person becomes the person responsible for the latest antics. 5. La Souris Blanche—In EBD’s story “Lorna at Wynyards”, Kit tells Lorna that she met Joey Bettany while on holiday in Brittany. This is the story of that meeting. Joey is 19, and the action takes place during the same timeframe as “The New Chalet School”. Joey heads to Brittany for a vacation with Simone, but Simone is delayed. She meets up with Kit from the Lorna series, and they have a fun adventure and uncover some interesting history at the same time. 6. A Slippery Slope—Occurs just before “The Chalet School and Rosalie”, where EBD writes how in “Tom Tackles the Chalet School” Nancy Chester is not at school because she injured herself with a wild prank over the Christmas break. Nancy is looking for some fun with her brothers, but when they head outside to try to put one of her brother’s ideas into action, the weather gets in the way. Deciding to try it indoors instead, Nancy runs into serious trouble. 7. Muddy Waters—occurs just before “Three Go to the Chalet School”. During “The Chalet School Reunion”, Jo mentions an incident that happened when the triplets were 8 years old. Selfishness and squabbling leads to an unwanted outcome for one of the “Trips”, and Joey helps a new girl reconcile to her new life at the Chalet School. 8. Peggy’s Find—occurs during “The Chalet School in the Oberland”. Peggy Bettany is at home helping her mother recover from her long illness. Though 17, she wants to go back to school but isn’t sure she’ll be able to if her mother still needs her. While scouting out space for her Aunt Bridgie in unused rooms of the Quadrant, Peggy stumbles across an item that excites her with its possibilities. 9. In the Strangest Places—Occurs during “Bride Leads the Chalet School”. Valerie Arnott visits her friend Mary Saunders, who would love to come to the Chalet School but is hampered by ill health. During the visit they enjoy exploring a nearby town and have an unexpected adventure where Valerie’s Guiding skills come in handy. They are late home for an important visitor as a result, where Valerie gets some surprising news about the current Head Girl, Loveday Perowne. 10. Attic Treasures—the story is set during EBD’s series of Skelton Hall entitled “The School at Skelton Hall”. In “Bride Leads the Chalet School”, there is a Diana Skelton who causes trouble. The story connects that Diana to some letters found by a few of the girls as they stay at school over break with an invalid friend. 11. Return to the Mountains—set during “Joey Goes to the Oberland”, the story tells of Miss Annersley’s travel to set up the school in Switzerland and her delight at being back among the mountains. 12. Justice and Mercy—Set at the time of “The New Mistress at the Chalet School”, it tells the story of how the new mistress, Kathie Ferrars, wears an old dress streaked with blood for a party. It happened as a result of an accident from when she was in school as a prefect. As usual, it involves shenanigans from some Middles. Kathie shows both justice and mercy in her handling of the trouble. 13. An Imp of the First Water— referenced during “The Chalet School and Richenda”, it is based on Charmian Spence’s well-deserved reputation for causing trouble and playing pranks. Charmian is regularly in trouble at her school, while her brother suffers from serious ill health. The family relocates to Switzerland so her brother can attend the San, and Charmian goes to the Chalet School. 14. On Second Thoughts—occurring during “The Chalet School and Richenda”. Related to the previous short story. A talk with her brother Paul in the San helps her moderate her prank-playing ways. 15. Cousins Abroad—Characters from EBD’s Chudleigh Hold series make up this story. The Anthony family and their cousins come to Switzerland so Rodney Anthony can get a necessary operation. In the story, the cousins get a day away from the San in town and the Maynard Triplets come to their rescue when an adverse event occurs. 16. Midnight Blues—occurs during “Ruey Richardson—Chaletian” and references an occurrence that EBD mentions as a school legend but never actually writes about. When the school gets good news about one of its pupils, some naughty Middles decide to celebrate with a ‘midnight’ to include a feast and play, but as usual, things go awry. 17. Felicity’s Jonah Day—set during “The Chalet School Triplets”, little Felicity Maynard runs into multiple troubles as she goes about her day at school. 18. The Swiss Mountain Adventure—set in the holidays after “Summer Term at the Chalet School”. The story includes Rodney Atherton from the Chudleigh Hold series and the adventure he has with Felix and Felicity that help him overcome a fear.
This collection of stories featuring characters from Elinor M Brent-Dyer's books is extremely enjoyable, filling in some of the gaps in those books. Perfect for reading just a story at a time, though I'm afraid I glommed them all at once!
