Nicci Gerrard was born in June 1958 in Worcestershire. After graduating with a first class honours degree in English Literature from Oxford University, she began her first job, working with emotionally disturbed children in Sheffield. In that same year she married journalist Colin Hughes.
In the early eighties she taught English Literature in Sheffield, London and Los Angeles, but moved into publishing in 1985 with the launch of Women's Review, a magazine for women on art, literature and female issues.
In 1987 Nicci had a son, Edgar, followed by a daughter, Anna, in 1988, but a year later her marriage to Colin Hughes broke down.
In 1989 she became acting literary editor at the New Statesman, before moving to the Observer, where she was deputy literary editor for five years, and then a feature writer and executive editor.
It was while she was at the New Statesman that she met Sean French.
Sean French was born in May 1959 in Bristol, to a British father and Swedish mother. He too studied English Literature at Oxford University at the same time as Nicci, also graduating with a first class degree, but their paths didn't cross until 1990. In 1981 he won Vogue magazine's Writing Talent Contest, and from 1981 to 1986 he was their theatre critic. During that time he also worked at the Sunday Times as deputy literary editor and television critic, and was the film critic for Marie Claire and deputy editor of New Society.
Sean and Nicci were married in Hackney in October 1990. Their daughters, Hadley and Molly, were born in 1991 and 1993.
By the mid-nineties Sean had had two novels published, The Imaginary Monkey and The Dreamer of Dreams, as well as numerous non-fiction books, including biographies of Jane Fonda and Brigitte Bardot.
In 1995 Nicci and Sean began work on their first joint novel and adopted the pseudonym of Nicci French. The Memory Game was published to great acclaim in 1997 followed by The Safe House (1998), Killing Me Softly (1999), Beneath the Skin (2000), The Red Room (2001), Land of the Living (2002), Secret Smile (2003), Catch Me When I Fall (2005), Losing You (2006) and Until It's Over (2008). Their latest novel together is What To Do When Someone Dies (2009).
Nicci and Sean also continue to write separately. I think the Maud O’Connor series by this perfect thriller duo just keeps getting better—and this one shook me to the core. It even made me furious at the unfairness one of the characters had to endure (I won’t spoil it, but judging from the book’s title and opening, you’ll probably guess who I mean). By the end, I cried—and I’m not saying whether it was from heartbreak, relief, or both.
The mystery is tense and deeply layered, revolving around a group of old university friends whose past never truly stayed buried.At the center is Tyler Green, a man who has spent nearly thirty years in prison for a crime he insists he didn’t commit: the murder of his friend Leo at a student party in 1993. After his release, Tyler attends the dinner party where the eight remaining friends from that night reunite, reigniting the embers of secrets long buried. But history has a terrifying way of repeating itself. Another murder. The same method. The same room. And Tyler, once again, stands accused.
Enter DI Maud O’Connor—sharp, intuitive, and not easily swayed by public opinion. While the media, the public, and even the highest levels of government rush to convict Tyler all over again, Maud quietly begins to pull at the threads of the case. Nicci French doesn’t just write crime novels—they write human stories buried inside mystery. And this one? This is a career highlight. It’s the kind of book that lingers, one that makes you question how many lives are quietly ruined by convenient assumptions and rushed conclusions.
Absolutely my favorite in the Maud O’Connor series—ten out of ten stars! A must-read for fans of Lucy Foley, Agatha Christie, and anyone who loves a good psychological gut-punch wrapped in a mystery.

"Tyler Green Will Never Be Free" by Nicci French is a cleverly constructed psychological thriller and the third in the Maud O’Connor Mysteries. I didn’t realize it was the third in the series, nor had I read the previous books, but that didn’t impact my enjoyment. It stands well on its own, and I had no issues following along.
The book follows the reunion of a group of old university friends and its aftermath. When they were students, one of them—Leo—was murdered, and another—Tyler Green—was convicted of his murder. He always claimed he was innocent. Now, almost thirty years later, Tyler is out of jail and asks his friends to reconnect, which they reluctantly agree to.
The reunion starts off as planned, but wine and accusations soon dampen the atmosphere and tensions rise. When another member of the group is found dead in the same manner as the first murder, suspicion falls on Tyler. After all, he is a convicted murderer. Detective Maud O’Connor is called to investigate, but she isn’t convinced Tyler is guilty. As the investigation unfolds, long-buried secrets and old wounds resurface.
The novel is a concoction of intrigue, psychological character study, and drama. The authors seamlessly weave themes of fallible human nature, morality, relationships, friendship, caring, abuse, bullying, justice—or the lack thereof—crime, and its consequences.
The story is told in third person, alternating between characters, and divided into two parts. The first part introduces the friends, giving us their backstories and psychological profiles, while the second focuses on Maud and the investigation.
The pacing of the mystery is somewhat slow, although it didn’t dampen my enjoyment. You won’t find any breathtaking tension here—the plot moves steadily, with limited action, focusing instead on the characters and atmosphere, which isn’t a bad thing.
I enjoyed the mix of psychological insight and suspense. It’s well-plotted, and what truly shines is the portrayal of the characters—their mindsets and the way their feelings of anger, fear, sadness, camaraderie, and pain feel so palpable. The authors excel at revealing character through both physical description and acute psychological observation.
I didn’t guess the identity of the perpetrator, and the curveballs thrown me back. I liked that Maud didn’t bow to outside pressures and insisted on conducting the investigation her own way, without prejudice. The writing is sharp and compelling, though it could use a bit of tightening, as the repetitions of the interrogations and the inclusion of some minor characters slowed down the pace.
Nicci French is the pen name of the husband-and-wife writing team Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, and the writing is so seamless that I couldn’t distinguish who wrote which parts. This is an exciting psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very last page. I enjoyed the book and its psychological depth, but the slow pacing and some repetitive scenes kept me from giving it five stars. I’m now eager to read the other two books in the series.

Ik moest er even in komen, maar het wist me uiteindelijk heel erg te boeien. Daarnaast had ik het idee dat de auteurs zich losjes hebben gebaseerd op het spel Cluedo. De setting deed me daar in ieder geval aan denken.

Tyler Green was tot levenslang veroordeeld voor de moord op zijn studiegenoot Leo. Nu, dertig jaar later, is hij vrij. Voordat hij de draad van zijn leven weer kan oppakken wil hij een wens laten uitkomen: dat de vriendengroep van destijds een avond samen doorbrengt. Toen is de hele vriendengroep uit elkaar gevallen, maar Tyler wil dat ze samenkomen - waarvoor precies, dat weet niemand.
Oud-studiegenoot Beatrice, inmiddels getrouwd met een politicus, stelt haar huis beschikbaar. Al snel wordt duidelijk dat Tyler bijbedoelingen had toen hij deze reünie organiseerde. En dan valt er nog een dode… Tyler wordt nogmaals in hechtenis genomen, maar hij houdt vol dat hij onschuldig is. Vertelt hij de waarheid?
Dit verhaal is opgedeeld in twee delen en het eerste deel begint met de vrijlating van Tyler Green. Hij heeft dertig jaar gevangen gezeten voor de dood op een studiegenoot en nu is hij weer vrij.
Hij wil vrijwel meteen een avond met zijn oude vriendengroep doorbrengen. Dus je leest ook snel vanuit verschillende personages. Eén hiervan is Beatrice, zij stelt haar huis beschikbaar.
Soms maak je sprongen naar het verleden en lees je meer over de vriendengroep. Het is nog onduidelijk wat er dertig jaar geleden op die bewuste dag is gebeurd, maar langzaamaan worden er steeds meer dingen uitgelegd.
De afwisseling van personages vond ik prettig, want zo kreeg je een beter beeld van de oude vriendengroep. Ook de sfeer tijdens het etentje werd goed op papier gezet, want het wordt duidelijk dat Tyler dit niet zonder reden wilde.
Vervolgens ga je naar het tweede gedeelte en lees je over Maud. Er blijkt een dode te zijn gevallen in het huis van Beatrice, dus er moet iets gruwelijk mis zijn gegaan tussen de oude vrienden, maar wat? En is Tyler weer de dader? Hij wordt sowieso weer opgepakt, maar Tyler beweert onschuldig te zijn. Lukt het Maud om achter de waarheid te komen?
Dit verhaal vond ik boeiend om te lezen. De dynamiek tussen de vriendengroep wordt goed beschreven en iedereen kon de dader zijn. Ik vond dat dit erg goed geheim bleef.
Het wordt niet heel spannend, maar ik vond het wel een heerlijk psychologisch verhaal.

Wow! Previous reviewers were not kidding when they said this was addictive! From the very beginning, I couldn’t wait to know who and I was pleasantly led on multiple times up until an ending I should’ve seen coming all along, but didn’t. So great!

Dertig jaar lang zat Tyler Green vast voor moord. Nu is hij vrij. Voor één avond brengt hij zijn oude vrienden weer samen, rond een zorgvuldig gedekte tafel.
Wat begint als een ogenschijnlijk onschuldig etentje, krijgt al snel een ongemakkelijke ondertoon. Oude loyaliteiten blijken broos, herinneringen onbetrouwbaar en zwijgen gevaarlijker dan spreken. Wanneer de avond ontaardt en er iets afschuwelijks gebeurt, wijst alles opnieuw in één richting: Tyler.
Maar rechercheur Maud O’Connor twijfelt. Is Tyler werkelijk een man die nooit is veranderd, of juist iemand die te goed weet wat hij doet?
Mijn ervaring:
Heerlijk! Opnieuw weet Nicci French me te verrassen met dit nieuwe deel. De verhaallijn is origineel, sterk en indrukwekkend, en bovendien scherp en zorgvuldig uitgewerkt. Het verhaal is niet alleen spannend, maar ook diep menselijk en psychologisch doordacht. Vanaf de eerste pagina hangt er een beklemmende, bijna unheimische sfeer, die gedurende het verhaal steeds verder wordt opgebouwd. De schrijfstijl is levendig, vlot en krachtig, waardoor je moeiteloos door het boek heen leest.
De personages vormen zonder twijfel het hart van dit verhaal. Hoofdpersonage Tyler roept direct sympathie en compassie op: een man die na bijna dertig jaar gevangenisstraf terugkeert in een wereld die hij nauwelijks nog herkent, worstelend met zijn verleden en met de mensen die ooit zijn vrienden waren. Die oude vrienden zijn stuk voor stuk complex, intrigerend en onvolmaakt, vol tegenstrijdigheden. Hun motieven, geheimen en gezamenlijke geschiedenis maken hun gedrag begrijpelijk, of juist extra verdacht.
De verhaallijn is slim en met precisie opgebouwd. Het verhaal begint met Tylers vrijlating en een ogenschijnlijk onschuldige reünie-avond, maar al snel sluipen emotie en spanning stap voor stap het verhaal binnen. Nicci French verrast met krachtige wendingen, verborgen motieven en geheimen die langzaam aan het licht komen. Als lezer blijf je voortdurend twijfelen: wie is te vertrouwen en wat is de echte waarheid? Thema’s als schuld, vriendschap en gerechtigheid zijn knap verweven in het verhaal. En dan is er natuurlijk rechercheur Maud O’Connor, wiens rol gaandeweg groeit. Haar innerlijke strijd en scherpe analyse geven het verhaal extra diepgang en emotionele lading.
Tyler komt nooit meer vrij is een pakkend, verrassend en indrukwekkend derde deel van de Maud O’Connor-serie. Het psychologische web van motieven, leugens en geheimen, gecombineerd met de sterke wendingen en gebeurtenissen, zorgt ervoor dat dit verhaal je van begin tot eind in zijn greep houdt.

Nicci French verrast met krachtige wendingen, verborgen motieven en geheimen die langzaam aan het licht komen. Als lezer blijf je voortdurend twijfelen: wie is te vertrouwen en wat is de echte waarheid? Thema’s als schuld, vriendschap en gerechtigheid zijn knap verweven in het verhaal. En dan is er natuurlijk rechercheur Maud O’Connor, wiens rol gaandeweg groeit. Haar innerlijke strijd en scherpe analyse geven het verhaal extra diepgang en emotionele lading.
Tyler komt nooit meer vrij is een pakkend, verrassend en indrukwekkend derde deel van de Maud O’Connor-serie. Het psychologische web van motieven, leugens en geheimen, gecombineerd met de sterke wendingen en gebeurtenissen, zorgt ervoor dat dit verhaal je van begin tot eind in zijn greep houdt.

Nicci French is toch wel een gevestigde waarde in thrillerland en ook met hun nieuwste boek wordt dit weer eens bevestigd.
Het boek start met voor elk personage een apart hoofdstuk. Dit was dan wel even in het verhaal komen want het zijn nog wel best veel personages. Eenmaal ze elkaar ontmoeten switchte het perspectief tijdens het hoofdstuk af en toe en daar ben ik eerlijk gezegd geen fan van. Maar het wende gelukkig snel want vanaf dat punt zat ik helemaal in het verhaal.
Het verhaal bestaat uit twee delen. In deel één heeft Tyler Green na zijn vrijlating een reünie gepland met zijn oude vrienden. Tyler heeft net bijna dertig jaar vastgezeten voor de moord op Leo, een lid van de vriendengroep. Hoewel ze allemaal hun bedenkingen hebben, is iedereen komen opdagen. Ze komen samen in het huis van Beatrice die nu als jurist werkt en gehuwd is met een minister. De avond loopt uit de hand als Tyler verklaart dat hij Leo niet heeft vermoord maar dat dit dus iemand van de anderen geweest moet zijn.
In het tweede deel wordt Maud O’Connor opgeroepen voor een moord in het huis van de minister. Tyler Green is meteen de hoofdverdachte maar Maud wil het onderzoek grondig doen en gaat ook de anderen verhoren. De schrijfstijl van Nicci French is meeslepend en diept de personages voldoende uit. Ondanks de vele hoofdpersonages is het vrij snel duidelijk wie wie is en hoe de onderlinge relaties in elkaar zitten. De emoties van Tyler komen soms wel binnen. Als hij weer de gevangenis in vliegt nadat hij pas is vrijgelaten. Vreselijk. Dan is er zelfs nog maar de vraag of hij effectief schuldig was én is. Het is niet nagelbijtend spannend, maar er is eerder sprake van een psychologische spanning die je aandacht vasthoudt tot op het eind. Op het einde valt alles mooi in elkaar.

This book is so engaging! It's the third in the Maud O'Connor series, but also works perfectly as a standalone. In Part 1 of the book, we meet a group of old college friends who get together after many years when one member of the friend group, Tyler Green, is released from prison on parole. Tyler was convicted of killing another one of their friends which understandably caused the others to become estranged from Tyler, but also fragmented the whole group. After serving almost thirty years in prison, Tyler still insists he's innocent, but why does he want to get together with the people who were so quick to abandon him?
Maud, as well as DS Carrie Kessler come into the picture in Part 2, The reunion goes wrong and Maud is called in to investigate yet another death occurring with the same group of people as decades earlier. Secrets from the past and the present come into play in this difficult case, but I had confidence that Maud would figure it out. My theory as to the killer was completely wrong, and it was fun to be surprised. I loved this book and recommend it to both fans of French and readers who haven't tried her books yet.

Een Nicci French: dat was lang geleden! Dit soort boeken koos ik vroeger in de bibliotheek met mijn moeder uit. Toen al was ik er gek op en nog steeds houd ik van thrillers. Maar wel op zijn tijd, want ik houd van afwisseling in mijn boeken. Die tijd was er nu en ik heb dit boek in een zucht uitgelezen.
Tyler Green komt na bijna 30 jaar vast te hebben gezeten vrij en organiseert een etentje met zijn oude vriendengroep. Deze vrienden weten allemaal waarvoor Tyler vast heeft gezeten - sterker nog: ze waren bij het delict. Tijdens de reünie komt veel oud zeer boven. Men wil bovendien weten wat de reden achter de reünie is. Dan valt er nog een dode en dat zet alles op zijn kop. Was het 30 jaar geleden wel zo gegaan als iedereen dacht?
Ik vlóóg door dit boek heen door de vlotte schrijfstijl. Het heeft korte hoofdstukjes en leest heel gemakkelijk weg. De perspectieven wisselen heel gauw - wat het aanvankelijk een beetje ingewikkeld maakt vanwege de vele karakters die je moet leren kennen - en daardoor blijf je als lezer geboeid. Ik heb me geen seconde verveeld in het eerste deel, terwijl ik in meerdere reviews juist lees dat men het eerste deel van het boek over het etentje zelf soms wat saai vind. Ik vond juist ergens in het tweede deel tijdens het politieonderzoek dat er op een gegeven moment weinig schot in de zaak was en dat er naar mijn smaak iets te veel herhaling was door de verhoren die plaatsvonden. De inspecteur die de zaak onderzoekt, Maud O'Connor, stelt dan namelijk allerlei vragen aan de getuigen die je als lezer nog niet helemaal kunt plaatsen. Dat is op zich prima, maar de opbouw naar de ontknoping duurde mij wel net iets te lang.
Ik moest mezelf er wel telkens aan herinneren dat ik over personages van in de 50 las en niet over jonge mensen in de leeftijd van 20 tot 30. Ik ben wel benieuwd of andere lezers dat gevoel ook hadden. De personages gedroegen zich naar mijn mening vrij jong. Ergens vind ik dat ook heel tof gedaan door de auteurs, aangezien dit aangeeft dat de betrokkenen terug in de tijd gaan en ik hun oude rollen vervallen als zij hun jeugdvrienden weer zien. Maar anderzijds kon ik de karakters in mijn hoofd niet zien als mensen van middelbare leeftijd en dat vond ik wel een beetje jammer.
Wat ik van de ontknoping vind? Ik werkte er heel erg naartoe in mijn hoofd tijdens het lezen, maar vond hem uiteindelijk niet erg spectaculair. The premise is instantly compelling: a group of former university friends reunite nearly thirty years after one of them was murdered and another—Tyler Green—was convicted of the crime. Tyler has always claimed he was innocent, and now that he’s out of prison, he brings everyone back together under one roof. Old grudges, buried secrets, and plenty of wine quickly turn the evening volatile… and history repeats itself when another guest is found murdered in the same way as the original victim.
What this book does very well is character psychology. The authors take their time peeling back layers of guilt, resentment, fear, and denial, and the emotional fallout of that long-ago night feels heavy and believable. The friendships are fractured, messy, and uncomfortable in a way that feels painfully human. Detective Maud O’Connor is a steady, grounded presence, and I appreciated her refusal to bend to outside pressure or easy assumptions.
That said, this is very much a slow-burn. The pacing is deliberate—sometimes too deliberate—with repeated interrogations and a few side characters that didn’t add much beyond padding the page count. The tension simmers rather than spikes, and while that will work for readers who love psychological depth, those expecting a high-octane thriller may find themselves wishing for more momentum. I also ended up guessing the perpetrator before the reveal, which took away some of the final impact.
Overall, this is a solid, thoughtfully written psychological thriller that shines in its exploration of memory, morality, and the long shadows cast by violence. It didn’t completely wow me, but it kept me engaged, and I’d still recommend it to fans of character-focused mysteries who don’t mind a slower pace.

At some point I had an idea that some smarmy person had dared Ms. French to use the word "asparagus" in a book a dozen times and the asparagus would be utterly irreverent to any of the plot. If so, she won that bet.
I found the first half of the book to be nearly insufferable. Glacial pace, annoying cast, cryptic conversations, no action, and no character development. I couldn't keep track of the people, save a handful, despite the extensive exposition. Once Maud came on scene, it picked up and felt more like a regular whodunnit. I love Maud, I enjoy this series, but the hours and hours of the reunion of former friends who all seemed to be miserable for different reasons was exhausting.

De psychologische thriller ‘Tyler Green komt nooit meer vrij’ is het derde deel in de serie rond Maud O’Connor. Vorig weekend heb ik dit boek gekocht en laten signeren door Nicci Gerrard en Sean French. Naast dat ze superlieve mensen zijn, schrijven ze ook hele fijne psychologische thrillers. Dit deel krijgt van mij vier sterren.
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit het perspectief van de derde persoon, waardoor je het vanuit meerdere invalshoeken beleeft. Zo lezen we mee met Tyler Green – een man die 28 jaar heeft vastgezeten voor de moord op Leo Bouwer – zijn oude vrienden en natuurlijk inspecteur Maud O’Connor.
De schrijfstijl van deze auteurs is vlot, en de personages hebben voldoende diepgang. De spanning wordt langzaam opgebouwd, met steeds meer informatie die uiteindelijk samenkomt in het plot – dat ik niet helemaal zag aankomen.

Wow! What a fabulous nail biting book from Nicci French. This author's books just get better and better. What Happened that Night is a second outing for detective duo Maud O'Connor and Carrie Kessler who cut through the nonsense like a sharp knife through butter. They turn up in part two of the book after part one has set the scene for the current murder and an historical one 29 years ago which are linked by a group of people present at both murders. French shapes her characters both likeable and not so likeable beautifully enabling the reader to picture them so clearly. The rollercoaster storyline has many twists and turns and a brilliant ending I certainly didn't guess. Definitely one for anyone who enjoyed a good who done it.

Eigenlijk voor een Nicci French zou die 2 sterren moeten krijgen. Weinig spanning eerste helft lijkt bijna een Roman en ook daarna is het een erg traag boek. Jammer ik keek lang uit naar dit boek. Hopelijk is het volgende boek beter 😓

Ik had al heel wat jaren geen boek van het schrijverduo Nicci French gelezen. Door de vele positieve reacties op dit boek begon ik met hoge verwachtingen. Het idee van een man die na bijna dertig jaar vrijkomt en dan meteen weer in een spannend web van geheimen belandt, vond ik erg interessant. Het boek begint sterk en de plottwists zorgden ervoor dat ik wilde blijven doorlezen.
Wat ik leuk vond, waren de korte hoofdstukken en de verschillende personages die allemaal hun eigen stem kregen. Ook rechercheur Maud O’Connor vond ik een fijne toevoeging: geen perfecte held, maar iemand die ook fouten maakt en daardoor heel echt aanvoelt. Dat maakte het verhaal levendig en zorgde ervoor dat ik bleef meedenken over wie de waarheid sprak.
Toch vond ik er ook wel wat minpunten. Er zat best wat herhaling in, waardoor het soms wat langdradig voelde. Dat haalde voor mij de vaart uit het verhaal. Al met al een spannende thriller die ik met plezier gelezen heb, maar het voldeed niet helemaal aan mijn verwachting. Daarom kom ik uit op 3 sterren.

Nearly three decades ago Tyler Green was imprisoned for the murder of his friend, Leo Bauer. Few of his circle went to visit him in jail, but Tyler has always maintained his innocence. Now, upon his release, the curious decision is made by the same group to get together.
Not unexpectedly, things do not go well. Another person is killed. Tyler is returned to prison and pressure is being put on those investigating to tie this case up quickly. Thankfully, Maud does things by the book and her investigation paints a very different light on events - both for the night of the dinner party and the night of Leo’s murder.
