When Hitler ordered the north of Nazi-occupied Norway to be destroyed in a scorched earth retreat in 1944, everything of possible use to their Soviet enemy was destroyed. Harbours, bridges and towns were dynamited and every building torched. Fifty thousand people were forcibly evacuated – thousands more fled to hide in caves in sub-zero temperatures.  High above the Arctic ...more

I have always been fascinated and impressed with Norway’s role in World War II and the effect on the country, ever since my first trip in 1969-70 at age 11. On our recent trip to Norway several of our guides gave more mention to World War II than I would have expected. Why do they still talk about this war that ended over 70 years ago? Isn't is all in the past? In a word: No. I found the perfect book to explain it all to me. Completely new topic for my consideration. The war in Norway was fought was from the public's eye and received little to no attention in most history books. This book explores the actions taken by the Germans as they evacuated northern Norway as the Russians advanced. The human suffering endured by the Norwegians and the prisoners of war are hard to fathom. Without restraint man can be incredibly callous to his fellow man. An important story to read and comprehend.

My first read on WWII in Norway; specifically northeastern Norway where the Nazis conducted a scorched earth policy. The book is primarily written detailing the civilian aspects of German occupation and destruction. The book was really an eye opener into this often overlooked WWII theater.

Thoughtful, detailed, and meticulously researched account of a little-remembered piece of WW2 history. Highly recommended.
