"The Music of the Netherlands Antilles: Why Eleven Antilleans Knelt before Chopin's Heart" is not your usual musical scholarship. In October 1999, eleven Antilleans attended the service held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Frederic Chopin's death. This service, held in the Warsaw church where the composer's heart is kept in an urn, was an opportunity for these Antilleans to express their debt of gratitude to Chopin, whose influence is central to Antillean music history. Press coverage of this event caused Dutch novelist and author Jan Brokken (b. 1949) to start writing this book, based on notes he took while living on Curacao from 1993 to 2002.

Anyone hoping to discover an overlooked chapter of Caribbean music and music history will be amply rewarded with this Dutch-Caribbean perspective on the pan-Caribbean process of creolization. On Curacao, the history and legacy of slavery shaped culture and music, affecting all the New World. Brokken's portraits of prominent Dutch Antillean composers are interspersed with cultural and music history. He puts the Dutch Caribbean's contributions into a broader context by also examining the nineteenth-century works by pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk from New Orleans and Manuel Saumell from Cuba. Brokken explores the African component of Dutch Antillean music--examining the history of the rhythm and music known as "tambu" as well as American jazz pianist Chick Corea's fascination with the tumba rhythm from Curacao. The book ends with a discussion of how recent Dutch Caribbean adaptations of European dance forms have shifted from a classical approach to contemporary forms of Latin jazz."

About the author

A well-known journalist, Jan Brokken made his debut as a writer in 1984 with the largely autobiographical novel De provincie (The Province), the story of a youth spent in the countryside, which was made into a successful film. He has published gripping travel books about, among others, Africa, Indonesia and Curaçao, and is the author of the acclaimed and bestselling novels De blinde passagiers (The Blind Passengers, 1996), De droevige kampioen (The Sad Champion, 1998) and Jungle Rudy (2006). His work, which has been translated into several languages, has been compared in the international press to that of Graham Greene and Bruce Chatwin.

Op zich een interessante vertelling over de invloeden van Europese/Poolse muziek op de 'Antilliaanse' muziek. Maar er zijn zoveel kanttekeningen.
Het had de stijl meer gesierd om het wetenschappelijk te houden in plaats van uitstappen te maken naar het romanachtige. Die poging is duidelijk mislukt. Het boek is 'tone-deaf'.
Het is overduidelijk geschreven vanuit een perspectief van buitenaf en zeker een wit-Europees perspectief. Verbazend om te lezen hoe op de ene pagina de auteur de Antiliaanse componisten prijst voor hun ingenieuze technieken, terwijl we op de volgende pagina schofterige beschrijvingen en overaannames lezen. De auteur noemt een bekende componist een 'pikzwarte jochie', een ander muzikant is een 'gemoedelijke dikzak', gebruikt kwalijke ouderwets termen als 'kleurling', noemt Papiaments 'ratelend' en kan het uiteraard niet laten om enorme overgeneralisaties te maken over voodoo, buitenechtelijke relaties en het 'temperament' van Antilianen. Volgens de auteur hadden slavenhouders 'vertier' nodig, dus doken ze de muziek in. Het lot van de tot slaafgemaakten krijgt hier niet eens een voetnoot. Tone deaf. Niet schokkend dat het hem niet gelukt is om banden te leggen met zwarte muziekanten. Vind je het gek.

Het boek gaat met name (maar niet alleen) over de witte muzikanten/componisten uit Curaçao met kleine uitstappen naar andere eilanden.Teleurstellend om grote uitspraken te lezen over 'de Antillen' en 'Antillianen' wanneer het in feite overgeneralisaties zijn gebaseerd op een korte periode te hebben gewoond op o.a. Curaçao en de lokale context nooit te hebben begrepen. Als je dit leest, dan zou je denken dat er geen muziek zou zijn op de eilanden zonder de invloed van de Europese slaven- en plantagehouders die het hebben meegenomen. Een trieste onderschatting van de invloeden van de rijke Afrikaanse en Caribische muzikale tradities die de lelijkste passages van de wereldgeschiedenis hebben overleefd. Voor een Antiliaan is dit pijnlijk om te lezen, ik raad het af. Voor anderen: dit boek bevat grove misvattingen over de 'Antiliaanse cultuur'. Lees het voor de muziekgeschiedenis, maar doe dat met grote korrels zout.

Fascinerend en interessant verhaal. Wel een kritische opmerking: is er bij uitgeverij Atlas werkelijk niemand die de spelling van Spaanse en Papiamentse woorden en namen kan controleren voordat een boek naar de drukkerij gaat?

Dutch is not my native language, but the idea that Chopin's music had such an influence on the mazurkas, waltzes, etc. of the Antillian culture was something I found very intriguing. I made the effort of reading it slowly and with enough concentration to understand (most of) what was written. Step by step, it took me a couple of months, but it was worth it!

I loved the book. Very insightful on facts I had no idea of. It also traces the family/musical lineage down to my fellow Antillian colleagues, Randal Corsen and Izaline Calister, whose music is a very rich mix of Antillian music with other cultures.
I plan to order music sheets from the composers mentioned in the book and try them out myself.

Geweldig boek. Jammer dat ik dit nu pas lees. Mijn waardering voor de muziek van de antillen heeft meer diepgang gekregen. Volgnde keer zal ik meer kunnen meepraten.
