The Mindful Marketer: How to Stay Present and Profitable in a Data-Driven World

It’s a tough time to be a marketer. Many are drowning in data, disrupted by generative AI, overloaded with demands, bombarded with competing priorities, and underfunded to take on challenges. These factors, together, are spreading many marketers too thin, keeping them from operating as the thoughtful, strategic leaders they were called to be. -- var(--tw-empty,/*!*/ /*!*/); -- var(--tw-empty,/*!*/ /*!*/); -- var(--tw-blur) var(--tw-brightness) var(--tw-contrast) var(--tw-grayscale) var(--tw-hue-rotate) var(--tw-invert) var(--tw-saturate) var(--tw-sepia) var(--tw-drop-shadow); rgb(229 231 235/var(--tw-border-opacity)); 0px 0px 1rem; 0px; optimizelegibility; 1.45; Montserrat; 16px; rgb(0, 47, 86);">In The Mindful Marketer, Lisa Nirell explains the need for a shift. Marketing may be modern. But at times it feels mindless.

That’s why Lisa’s passionate about helping CEOs and CMOs cut through the chatter, grow revenues, and accelerate marketing innovation. How does she do it? By applying mindful, strategic and pragmatic leadership and planning models that have taken her decades to discover and develop. She’s your marketing guru.

She’s also the Chief Energy Officer of EnergizeGrowth® and the founder of Marketing Leaders of DC™ and Atlanta. Innovative companies such as Adobe, Infor, Gannett/USA TODAY, and Hilton hire Lisa to gain fresh insights, formulate new strategies, and launch breakthrough marketing ideas.

Lisa contributes to FastCompany, CMO.com, Forbes CMO, and HuffingtonPost. She also authored EnergizeGrowth NOW: The Marketing Guide to a Wealthy Company and The Mindful Marketer: How to Stay Present and Profitable in a Data-Driven World.

Lisa never realized she had the innovation bug until she turned 40. (It took years of therapy and peer feedback!) Her father, Edgar Lizotte, was an inventor–he held many patents for mechanical security devices. While she will never claim to have changed the world, she’s committed to creating sustainable, customer-centric organizations and elevating the marketing profession.

Today, she finds innovation inspiration from “unplugged” moments–open water swimming, meditation, and adventure travel with her husband, Magnus.

Marketing and meditation — two concepts that do not seem harmonious. What is zen about product promotion, sales cycles, or market research?

Lisa makes the connection brilliantly in her book The Mindful Marketer, as she weaves together practical and inspirational concepts. Her suggestions to enhance personal mindfulness in the workplace and at home for better business results are compelling and attainable. The careful examination of cross-relationships in the workplace, mainly how CMOs relate to others in the C-suite, provide excellent guidance on collaboration.

Lisa’s candid style is highlighted by moments of levity and self-deprecating humor. Even the most skeptical of executives would benefit from reading this book. You might even find start centering yourself and breathing more deeply as you read — I did!

Honestly, this book is really judgy. It feels a bit like a lecture on how 'terrible' technology is even for marketers. I really get the vibe that this book and the author would be pushing for 100% back in office even if it was more productive to WFH. There's a potential for decent points here, but the lecturing tone is not it for me.

This book sat on my shelf for quite some time, perhaps because I thought it was just another business book. It’s unique and not what I expected—in a good way. It aligns with my own principles of mindfulness and awareness in life and business.
