The remedial assignment continues as Soul and Maka confront Dr. Franken Stein, the man behind Sid-sensei's unfortunate transformation and the strongest meister ever to graduate from Death Weapon Meister Academy. Even without a weapon, his massive soul dwarfs them all-even big shot Black*Star! Can Maka rally her strength to face Stein in battle, or will despair be her downfall?
Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
I love this series a lot. I think it's one of the best. The pictures are very well drawn and the anime is even better, in my opinion. This book has just the right amount of suspense and action to keep me motivated to continue reading. Plus....
I'm really enjoying this series so far. The artwork is really fun. It's gothic and punk and creepy, and just overall different and cool. I'm really digging the storyline and the characters aren't bad. I mean... Shinigami-sama is clearly the greatest! But so far I like them all! I can't wait to see what happens nexted after the ending of this volume. Things are getting more interesting!
The series continues and the characters are still kinda meh, but there is potential in this Kishin plot that is starting. The power system is a little confusing still, but the art is consistently fun.
Overall a better volume in the story, though I could have done without the fight between classmates. I guess that was to just to info dump about how the world works. Once that was over more of the real story began to develop and that is what I am here to read. 3.5 stars might be closer to 4 depending on my mood on a different day.
Soul Eater Volume 2 (Chapter 2) Soul, Maka, Black Star, and Tsubaki meet the infamous Stein and go up against him while The Grimm, Kid, Liz, and Patty watch from the Academy. Their attacks are strong but his are more powerful because he uses his soul to power his weapon making his attacks more potent. We also see that he can block attacks by matching his soul's wavelength to his opponents. Because he can also read souls he gives them all a run for their money. Only when in a special move done by Soul proves itself successful does Stein reveal his true motivations. And we also get a surprise reveal of a new teacher at the Academy. Kid signs himself up as a student after not being able to help the others but becomes distracted when going to help fight against Stein.
(Chapter 3) Soul and Blackstar face off against each other. With Soul as his partner instead of Tsubaki, Blackstar seems to have met his match. But there are consequences. Death the Kidd is defeated in a move that throws off his symmetry.
(Chapter 4) On an extra lesson assignment in Italy, Maka senses a technician and it's weapon inside an old church along with about 50 human souls. But before she knows it the human souls mysteriously vanish. Maka comes face to face with Crona and its revealed his weapon is embedded inside his body. (Ragnarok). Stein screws with Maka's father a little bit when he goes to the doctor so he can find Maka. (Also attempting to get some sexual healing). And Stein scares him shitless. We learn in the first issue that Stein left scars on Maka's father when he tried to experiment on him. Then he screws with his some more about his divorce. Ragnarok emerges from Crona and starts to pick at him, which infuriates Maka. She goes in for the attack but discovers she can't damage his body because his blood turns into a weapon. Crona is reluctant to kill Maka despite having Medusa's and Ragnaroks voices both in his ear. Soul transforms into a human after some blows that Maka can't deflect and jumps in front of her.
(Chapter 5) Maka is cornered. Soul is out for the count. Medusa tells Corona to finish her off. As Maka kneels over Soul a blade slices into Crona as he's about to finish her off with Ragnarok and then a boot kicks him backwards. It's Stein and her father (as his weapon) to the rescue. Only she ignores her father completely and turns her attention to Soul's injuries. On orders from the Grimm, Stein and Maka's father go to complete the job and destroy the kishin. As in Crona is one step away from becoming a Kishin. Stein hits Crona with his soul wave-length trying to do some internal damage. But his blood sharpens and turns into needles. It' is shown that Crona is what happens when souls are over-hunted. He's a demon sword. And his weapon side is the more dominant personality. Also, there's an internal snake coiled around his soul. Stein knocks Crona around and deflects his needles until he knocks him on his backside. With the soul protect release Crona's soul is scrambled. Stein and Maka pick up on the soul of another a witch. Her soul is strong. She's the one that put the weapon in Crona. We learn that Soul Protect is camouflaging a witch's soul to make it appear human. Medusa makes a cameo, plays with them a bit, and then she's out. They return back to the DMA. Soul's condition is up in the air. Some of Crona's black blood got mixed with Souls. And we see that Medusa the witch is the Doctor. She tells Maka she's gotten much stronger and as she turns we see black fumes leaking from her lips.
MY THOUGHTS: I can't stress enough how important it is to actually WATCH this series and not rely solely on just these UNCLEAR black and white illustrations. You have to SEE Episode 7 and 8 and view the emergence of Ragnarok bursting out of Crona and towering over his body. You have to actually witness how loopy Crona is and hear him tell us things like how his blood is black, how the door only opens inward, and how he just can't deal with (insert ANYTHING). "I've never seen a man with a screw sticking out of his head. I don't know how to deal with a man like that." While it's equally as fun to read about Stein (excuse the pun) "screwing" with Spirit it's just that much more fun to WATCH him freak out. "Made ya look!" Spirit is just so over the top DRAMA QUEEN! In fact, you just can NOT grasp from reading this how humorous it all is in all the disturbed gore of the plotlines of killing and devouring souls and exorcist demon like actions. The Crona plot line is SUPERB! To be such a weak-willed character his make -up as being a demon sword and the way his blood naturally forms weapon attacks is STONG and fascinating! As well as the origin we only get a hint of in that the Witch Medusa embedded the Demon Sword inside him. Leaving us to wonder how. Equally horrifying is the image of Soul dying in Maka's arms as blood gushes and sprays out at us on the screen. Tugging at the heartstrings. Will Soul make it out of this to eat his 99th soul and that of a witch? (Of course, he will. The series is called SOUL EATER after all.) In both episode and comic you get helpful tidbits on what attacks are spoken from the characters (for example Soul Protect and Soul Rejection) and what they do. But what I didn't get was Medusa has a tell (tell) braid so how did they NOT recognize her even with Soul Protect? And I know I've watched this series but does Crona's black blood affect Soul? (Blanking). It's even worth it to see the Maka chop on not only Black Star but Spirit and too see the sinister ending. I think Chapter 4/5 were my favorites. Now let's talk about the others. Chapter 2 and we have the entrance of the ultimate Meister Stein and he falls flat on his face (not once but twice) "Is this guy for real?" He's an interesting character. Despite being a klutz his fighting skills are IMPRESSIVE! In the episode, he knocks down Black Star without even getting off his stool. He would be a BEAST in a fight because in a way he's psychic. He can read your soul thus he can read your attack, counter it, and block it. Spirit says it correctly and sums it up. "Steins mad but he's a genius." He uses his soul waves to connect with his weapon and intensify his attack. (Laughing) "How can you forget I'm here." Black Star. Stein "Easily". So again Stein we see has some wit. This man can fry your brains with electricity coming from his hands! (VERY NICE TOUCH!) And the comic way he twists the knob in his head all the time. The remedial message itself was strong about caring enough about a person (partner) to put your life over (in front) of their to save theirs. Which brings us to the DRAMA QUEEN of all drama queens. KIDD who immediately loses his mind because Soul tells him he should have been there at 7 and since 7 isn't symmetrical he flips out. The battle between Black Star, Soul, Kidd, and the Thompson sisters in one word COMICAL! It's another instance where you'll have to SEE to appreciate the break-up of the bromance of Soul and Blackstar and how Kidd shots them both. "Oops sorry. My fingers slipped." YEAH, I just beat they did (laughing). BUT we get to see Kidd at his most formable when he goes into overdrive and delivers Death Cannon. So many strong characters with AMAZING attacks that this could have EASILY been adapted into a video game. AND THE WINNER IS... Guess you'll just to read this issue or watch the episode 6 The New Student: Kid's First Day
RATING: 10. It had greatly developed characters, strong action, and original fight moves that were nothing short of amazing. The plot's each had funny moments. I LOVE THIS SERIES!
Soul Eater, Vol. 2 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next four chapters (2–5) of the on-going manga series.
Maka Albarn, Soul Evans, Black Star, and Tsubaki Nakatsukasa are overwhelmed in battle against Franken Stein, the most powerful meister to ever graduate from the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), who reveals that the fight had been set up for their remedial class and goes on to teach at the DWMA.
Death the Kid decides to enroll at the DWMA and displays his immense power in battle against Soul Evans and Black Star, who are incompatible with each other. Maka Albarn and Soul Evans encounter Crona, the wielder of the demon sword Ragnarok, who absorbs human souls under orders of the witch Medusa and risks transforming into a kishin, a demon god that could plunge the world into chaos and madness.
Soul Evans is severely injured while protecting Maka Albarn in battle against Crona, who is defeated by Franken Stein and Spirit Albarn, Maka's father.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. The tankōbon focuses on two battles one with Franken Stein – a control fight and the other with Crona and Ragnarok, who has a goal of becoming a kishin, a demon god. The tankōbon closes with the defeat of Crona by Franken Stein and Spirit Albarn – the father of Maka Albarn.
All in all, Soul Eater, Vol. 2 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
admito q este me gustó mucho más q el primero y agradezco q ya no esté tan sexualizado x dioss, además, se me ha ido como el agua y el doctor stein me ha flechado kajaja a ver q show con el siguiente tomo y el pdo en el q se metió soul
Technically speaking, the artists work is fairly average, just in terms of raw technical ability, but like many other famous artists they demonstrate that it might be more important to have fun while you draw than it is to 'get it right'. If it was fun to draw it will probably be fun to look at.
Yeah, I think I don't need to read any more of this series. It's not terrible or anything, but it's just not grabbing me enough to dive in and keep reading. Two volumes in, there seems to be some attempt to set up some ongoing conflicts and/or mysteries (I guess there's an evil witch that has infiltrated the school?), but it's not enough that I have to find out what happens, the characters and their relationships aren't that interesting, and while the fight scenes are fine, they're not so great that I'm itching to see more. I'll pass, but maybe I'll check out the anime sometime, just out of further curiosity.
﹔‶i do not defy evil, nor do i believe that any human is completely free of malice. everything must be in balance. as long as evil and good maintain an equilibrium in this world there is no problem. perfect balance is the key to everything.″

i didn't realize how quickly the manga dives into the crona and medusa stuff compared to the anime its so much faster reading it imo. crona my beloved <3333 the double spreads in this volume are also crazy good im obsessed.
This book is about a boy who can use people as weapons to defeat demons and take the souls of demons to make his weapon stronger. The weapons you can have are swords, sythes, guns and sythes on chains. When you colect one hundred demon souls your weapon will turn into a demon weapon that has unlimited power.
Medusa and Dr Stein. Gotta love them. Just noticed that the only female characters that have somewhat "fancy" (nick)names are Witches while almost all male characters have memorable names, no matter who they are.
With this volume I am officially OBSESSED with Soul Eater!!!! The souls are so freaking cool. Kid is my favourite character and I love the relationships between the weapons and the meisters!
