What a great story. A detailed and comprehensive biography of the two very different personalities who towered above their contemporaries and brought golf to the American masses. As a life-long competitive golfer myself, a historian and history teacher, I have read just about everything written by and about both men. This book is a must read about the 'Simon-pure' amateur and All-American Boy Jones. Jones actually played relatively little golf compared with the bon vivant and roguish . Hagen, who, in addition to tournament competition, played exhibitions throughout the United States and around the world.

This book was interesting to a non-golfer. The stories about the people is a slice of history and the quirks of golfing in the US vs golfing in the UK or beyond. This background history of people and places provided an enjoyable read. I am a good sport when a book is chosen by my book club, and I was surprised by how readable and interesting it was!
