Rate this book
Hermione Daggert is a newly certified California private investigator and the junior partner in Denning & Daggert. Proud possessor of her own business card, she relies on her special analytical skills and ability to fade into the background so completely that people forget they met her. The senior partner, Emma Denning, turns over an assignment for a local Indian tribe, the Kanache, to Hermione. Over a year before, a man camped illegally on the reservation. The chief forced him to leave immediately. Ever since, the land on which he camped has seen unparalleled devastation. The chief’s grandson is injured in a freak accident on that section of the reservation and loses a leg.

Hermione is hired to find that man. And she does.

But that is only the beginning. The Kanache sell that section of the reservation to an academic entrepreneur, Dr. Frederic Unlickner, who uses the site to build the Institute of Holistic Health, his lifelong dream. Emma Denning despises Unlickner on sight and nicknames him “Dr. Unlikeable.”

No longer content to simply maim a teenage boy, the land seems to seek new victims beginning with a fiery crash, burning a young socialite alive. Hermione finds herself working at the Institute, trying to unravel the geologic mystery with several murders tucked inside. No longer sure that she understands human nature, or anything else, she narrowly escapes being swallowed alive by the land underneath her feet.

Emma is a freshly certified private investigator in a small town. She's eager to start on her first case, which at the outset seems relatively simple. A local Native American leader wants her to locate a man who he believes cursed his tribe's land. Emma finds the man, a disgruntled gypsy. Case closed, right? But the gypsy refuses to revoke his curse, and the land continues to have problems. Frustrated, the reservation sells off the property, and a fancy new college, the Institute, is built.

Whatever people's opinions of the native legends and lore, and the efficacy of gypsy curses, no one can deny the tragic happenings on the cursed land, even after the Institute gets going. A woman is murdered as she drives away after the grand opening ceremony, when her car careens over the ravine and bursts into flames with her still inside it! Could the charming founder, Dr. Unlickner, have darker undertones to his personality? Emma is the reluctant guinea pig sent by the police to test out some theories about what is really going on at the prestigious new school. Things are definitely not what they seem.

The book was published July 1, 2014 through Night to Dawn Magazine and Books, LLC. ISBN 9781937769338. Mystery is not my favorite genre, but I quite enjoy it if it's done right. This novel was well written and I really liked how the writer could turn a clever phrase. It kept the story moving and fresh.

This was a very intriguing and fascinating tale. I can honestly say I had no idea who the culprit was until the last moment. This mystery will keep you on your toes and keep you wondering.

Hermione is one smart cookie and uses this intelligence to help her as a PI. Her calm sense helps to keep things in perspective and helps her in this dark and foreboding tale of death.

She is hired to investigate the issues for a Native American tribe at first. This results in a unexpected tale of curses and beliefs in curses. Due to this the tribe sells a parcel of land to a Holistic doctor and suddenly death is at everyone's door. Now the arrogant doctor has hired her to find out the truth behind the deaths.

As Hermione got to know the gruff doctor she sees he has a kind side he just doesn't express himself well. He is one tracked in his thoughts but is considerate. At first the thoughts of him being the murderer will come to mind. Heck he is arrogant and has so much to gain and lose. So that is who Hermione has as a suspect even though he hired her.

there are so many twists and turns you will be thoroughly wrung like a wet towel to dry but will enjoy each second of it as you go through the solving of the deaths and see a wee bit of a romance begin as well.

A well written thoroughly engaging and fascinating dark mystery that will keep you on your toes.

It was a really good story featuring Hermione Daggart. Hermione Daggart was a brand new P.I. who was trying to solve her first case, while investigating mysterious situations happening at a reservation. She was called there by the resident head Chief. It was suspenseful ,from the beginning and had some humor and had some really likeable and quirky characters that interact with Hermione (and some of them were really quirky) but they have the ability to capture your attention. So if you get a chance check it out.
