I loved Gabe, "he grinned and held his cup to his lips. "We could always go back to bed. You. Me. Warm, rumpled sheets. Warmer bodies." He dropped the leer and set his cup on the table. "And no, Em. I'm not teasing and I'm not kidding. You really are beautiful, and looking like this, all tousled and sleepy, you're too damned hot for me to ignore. Besides, it's a big bed. I was lonely last night. I don't like to sleep alone." I also loved Em that girl is just really caring, "she touched his chest ...more

It's not often that I read a series story and I fall harder for a second or third generation "Hero" than I did for one of the originals. Anton has been my go to hero in the Wolf Tales series since I first got introduced to them. Yet here it is book 4 in the second generation and I've found a new male of worth. He has all the charm and charisma as his father, but I think he's even more lovable bc he had his mom to give him the heart and compassion that his dad can sometime forget. Gabe and Em's s ...more

I love that Kate's books can take you to real life things at happen that are dark. But through the darkness there is always light. The characters are so strong and brave that you love and admire them! The Chanku Series are my favorites there about family and love and together you can conquer pretty much anything. The story makes you laugh and cry and even cheer. And some really sexy steamy sex scenes! You feel like the characters are family! ...more

Dark Refuge, Kate Douglas
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
This is the fourth book in Kate's erotic paranormal series, and follows the preceding ones by building on the stories and experiences of the Chanku, a shapeshifting group. For many years people did not know they were part of this group, then it was discovered by accident, the pack formed and now the second generation, the children of those who had thought they were simply human but felt like misfits, are growing up.

The fourth book in the Spirit Wild is a riveting romance that captures the heart. Emeline Cheval’s life is thrown into chaos when she discovers a fellow Chanku trapped in a human trafficking and prostitution ring and she must turn to the very pack she left behind. Gabe Cheval fears he’ll never find a mate of his own until he’s sent to help Emy with a situation and finds that girl he once knew is a grown beautiful young woman. As they explore their attraction, a dark menace lurks deep inside Emy’ ...more

I enjoyed the story concept behind the book Dark Refuge (Spirit Wild #4) by Kate Douglas. A not quite human species who can change in to multiple animal forms (even though we only saw the wolf and snow leopard in this book), that live in wolf type hierarchy. What I did find interesting in this story, was even though there could be many Chanku, throughout the US / world, they seemed to refer to themselves as one pack, with one main home base, this is a different and fresh take on the shifter life ...more

December, 2039 Emeline Chaval flew into San Francisco from Asia and was glad to he on home ground as it had been years since she left. She worked for Chanku Global Industries had had traveled all over Asia for CGI's business. She was twenty-six years old, spoke several Asian languages, but she was not the scared eighteen year old girl that left home anymore! She was heading for her home at headquarters when she heard a woman mind speak for help. Just down the street, she spotted a tall woman sta ...more

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book picks up with another mated pair re-discovering each other in the story of Em and Gabe. If you've read the previous books in this series, a lot of the characters should be familiar and fun to reconnect with. I highly recommend checking out the other books, but this can probably be read as a standalone if you wanted.

Em has been trying to find her place for a while, straddling the line between Chanku (shapeshifter, who are o

Dark Refuge by Kate Douglas

Can Kate Douglas ever write a mediocre book? I say not! Never a dull moment with her Chanku. They're filled with intensity, sensuality, sarcastic ribbing and querky characters.

Back in San Francisco, after years abroad. Emiliene finds herself in a situation where help is needed. Enter Gabriel Cheval, he and his packmates have jumped in to save one chanku but finds more. Kidnapped and held against their will and forced into a profession they did not want. Can he save his

The Spirit Wild world continues to grow and so does the intense plot Kate creates in her fantastic stories. Kate Douglas manages to thrill you, entice you and leave you in wonder.
Kate's books would make the best movies with a hero and heroine that have minds and hearts and sexual tension that keep a reader loving both and a fresh unique plot that will keep every reader coming back for more! Gabe and Emy are reunited and are twice as fine, you won't believe what happens next.

I love everything about this series!!! And once again Kate has brought to us a wonderful, exciting, a oh so passionate adventure into the lives of the Chanku!!! Her characters Gabe and Em, came together and brought so much to one another. And I loved how they found the six young ladies and excepted all of them into the pack even though two of them were human. Kate shows in this book and all of the books involving the Chanku, how all can be excepted and loved. I am so very awed by the family valu ...more
Dark Refuge is the fourth book in Kate Douglas' Spirit Wild series, which also happens to be the spin off from her very popular Wolf Tales series. Although a standalone, its actually better to have some familiarity with her Chanku Mythology since the backdrop for the book is set into the near future, the next generation of Chanku. In Dark Refuge, like the previous books, the main character romance is actually between Gabe and Emy but the Chanku as a pack is always there. For non fans its going t ...more

With concepts that make you sit up and take notice, thought provoking statements such as ‘I love him so much I want to share him’, make this novel a must for any readers of erotic fiction with an open mind.

I loved this book – the relationships between the characters, male and female, and male and male. The pack mentality that support is provided and needs met while still holding faithful to the one, two or three you love is wonderful. The plot twists and detailed writing style is adaptive to the

Dark Refuge by Kate Douglas is a marvelous surprise. I have enjoyed reading her contemporary romantic suspense more than her paranormal books but this one I did really like. The story line has branched out to include other shifters and other issues than acceptance and tolerance. This book covers topics from both the victim’s and their families’ perspectives. Problems from real life are tackled in this paranormal book. Sometimes, well-meaning behaviors actually don’t help as Ms. Douglas clearly u ...more

Emeline has some deep dark secrets that even she cannot figure out. Gabe needs to help her remember what happened to her as a child so the two of them can be bonded and have a good life together.

This book did not have the ebb and flow to make it an outstanding novel. There were quite a few times that the writing felt pressed and rocky. The transitions from one paragraph to another felt chopped up.

The plot was pretty good but there was no real consistency to it. The author we

I started reading this book without realising it was part of a series. Within a few pages I had realised. I also knew that the story so far was beautifully written and that I would be doing myself a disservice by not reading the first three books.

Needless to say, I devoured the first three books in three days and then this book in about half a day.

I also realised there is a whole series of books that tie in to this series too. Guess what? Im going to get myself the entire first series of books a

The story between Gabe and Emy is so emotional and makes you love these two more and more. The things that the characters have to overcome makes you see how brave and strong they are and you feel with them. I LOVED this book! The characters are strong and well-developed and the storyline is amazing! The author pulls you into the story and as you read you see the story unfold more than read it.
I have really enjoyed this series. The friendship, the relational dynamics, the steam, I loved it all. I like a good mating frenzy every now and then. But still, at least act like you want to know me, before offering your wife up. I had a lot of fun. Even during the parts that made me cry.
