When I first started reading this book I was having some difficulty getting into it. I kept thinking I must be missing something. Then I realized that it might have made it easier had I read the first two books in the series prior to reading Designed. That being said, the author does a great job of having flashbacks in the beginning to help the reader have a better understanding of the history of Blake, Matthew and Chris. Blake is a girl that was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, or so she would say, but growing up that same silver spoon almost choked her. The only blood relative that Blake has is Matthew, that being said she also has a soon to be ‘sister’ Lauren who just recently became Matthew’s fiancée and used to be Blake’s roommate. She also has Gracie who is really Lauren’s friend, but throughout the book we see the friendship between Gracie and Blake grow and develop. Chris is Blake’s first and only love from high school. He is also Matthew’s best friend. The three of them grew up with each other and were always there for each other up until approximately 9 years ago when Blake told him to leave her alone. The problem is Chris never understood why, but he never tried to find out either. They both have spent the last decade doing a really good job of ignoring each other. This is a story of Blake and Chris’s past, while Blake deals with the present where Lauren and Matthew are going to get married and have their first baby together. At one point Gracie does an excellent job of summing up the Blake and Chris into something that resembled a movie preview: ‘Two people who love one another, torn apart by the vents of a wild, drunken night. Mistakes were made. Secrets developed. The truth hung in the balance for many years until converging events brought everything out into the light. Will the betrayals of the past keep them apart, or can they find their way back into each other’s arms?’ The relationship and bond that Blake has with Matthew is amazing. They are there for each other no matter what, they are each other rock and support through life. The connection that Blake has with Chris is what fairy tales are made of, but with the twist of a secret that drew a wedge between them. I really loved the characters but I have to say there were many times I wish I could have yelled at Blake or maybe just slapped some sense into her. I know she was young and dumb when mistakes were made, but come, she wasted so much time. This book was a wonderfully amazing read. It might have taken me a minute to become engaged in the book, but then I was hooked. I was rooting for Blake and Chris to find their happy ever after throughout the entire book…I am so glad that I didn’t give up because this book and these characters were definitely worth my time and I enjoyed finishing every page…
This story was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review. I found after reading the first two stories and learning all about Matthew and Lauren, I was really looking forward to learning more about his sister Blake. She had been Lauren’s roommate at the beginning, and the chemistry between her and Chris hinted towards some really interesting history.
As I read deeper and deeper into this segment of the trilogy the answers to my questions came to light. I began to understand what had happened between them so many years ago and how one single act could change theirs lives for so long. Chris and Blake had been buddies and then lovers for it seemed to be forever. They started seriously dating when she was only fourteen and it seemed to be destiny that they would end up together forever. Then Matthew got into trouble with the law and things changed. Blake found her estranged from her parents and her relationship with Chris reached a crises point. It went in a direction that neither one of them could foresee and for the last nine years they have been avoiding each other. She tries to loose herself in other men but it never works, she can’t forget the love of her life and stop yearning for the life that they were meant to have.
It will take a lot of bravery on her part to open up apart what has kept her away from him for so long. It will take a lot of love and patience on his part if he is to listen to her and help her heal. I know that they still love each other, but am not sure if that is strong enough to bear it all.
Once again Alicia Renee Kline has written a tear jerker of a novel. Blake was so very young when she had to make so many adult decisions and learn to live her life alone. Quickly she looses everyone that is dear to her, her family, her brother and then Chris. It is not wonder that she harbors guilt for so many years. I am rooting for some love for her. I am hoping that she and Chris are able to make amends and continue on as they are meant to be- together.
I would give this story a 5/5. I would also highly recommend that you read them all in order. It is truly worth it. I loved them all.
I haven’t read the first two books in the series, so maybe this is why it took me a while to really get into the book. Even though this book can be read as a standalone, because the hero and heroine were side characters in the previous books, I think I would’ve probably gotten a bit more out of it, had I read the other books first. Unfortunately, I failed to connect with the heroine, Blake. At first I didn’t like her behavior, how she jumped from one man to the other, and I couldn’t understand why she did that. I really liked Lauren and Matthew the side characters (who were the main characters in the first two books), and I’ll probably read the first two books in the series to know a little more about their story. In the first part of the book there were a lot of flashbacks, telling the story of how Blake and Chris fell in love, but sometimes the back and forth was a little confusing so it took me a while to really become involved. Once the story progressed in the present, I was looking forward to reading about Chris and it wasn’t until he finally entered the story that I got hooked. Chris is an adorable hero, even though at some points I wished he would strangle Blake because she was being too childish and annoying. I liked how the book ended and that we got a glimpse of the next book. Gracie and Will (two side characters) will be the heroine and hero of the next installment in the series, so it should be a funny read because Gracie is such a quirky character and Will seems like a cute hero. All in all it was a cute story. The reason I rated it 3 stars is because I couldn’t connect with the heroine and at times the story seemed to drag, without anything important really happening. If you’ve read the previous books in the series, you will want to read this. If you haven’t, I think you should give the book a chance anyway, especially if you like second-chance love stories. ***I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review***
Another great read from Alicia Kline! I thoroughly enjoyed Intoxicated and Shattered, and I'm thrilled to say the same for this book. Actually, I believe Designed was my favorite, so far. This is the third book in the Intoxicated Series, and I loved the way the author brought the reader up to speed in the prologue regarding what had happened at the conclusion of the previous book. I would recommend that the series be read in order so that readers get the full impact of the characters and their personalities.
This is Blake and Chris's story. Almost a decade earlier, Blake and Chris were in love - until one night when everything fell apart for her, Chris, and Matthew, Blake's brother. However, Matthew has finally found love and happiness, while Blake is still hiding the secret that destroyed hers years earlier. Chris still loves Blake, despite the way things ended and the years of separation as a couple. He still wants Blake and wants to understand what really happened, but Blake can't bring herself to tell him the secret that she's held in for so long.
As usual, I love Gracie, who is Matthew's fiance's best friend and does and says what everyone else would like to say but doesn't. The conversation Blake has with her is excellent and allows Blake to finally share with someone besides Chris what she bottled up inside so long ago. An aside: I can't wait for Gracie's story!
As with the first two books int the series, the characters were very realistic and didn't do what I wanted them to do when I wanted them to do it. They did have to work through what tore them apart in order to find their way back to a future together. Just as couples do in the real world, Blake and Chris had to do it in their own way. I thought this book was well-executed and was very happy with the ending. Now, I'm looking forward to the beginning of the NEXT book!
I need to say that as much as I liked Blake I also growled at her and wanted to smack her upside the head. Years ago when she was young she decided to be stubborn and pigheaded. This cost her everything. Now as she’s planning her brother’s wedding and dealing with his impending fatherhood the past stupidity rears its ugly head. She is facing demons of the past, regrets and secrets. Also chris her loss of him because of her pigheadedness and now she must make nice with him because he is her brother’s best friend. For years she ignored him secretly still loving him and regretting her actions. She said some pretty horrible things to him. Knowing her actions would get the desired consequences but not knowing how much she would regret it. Now she is wanting him and suffering for her secrets and transgressions in silence. Chris still loves her to but is afraid check last time he tried she slammed the door in his face. At the wedding he plucks up the courage and they talk. Really talk but her revelation has him reeling and her scared he won’t come back. Her brother, whom I adore, knows better. He has seen Chris pining over her for years and tells her he needs time. Chris does come back and what ensues is a easy sweet love story that will have you smile. Gone are the secrets and now it’s honesty and trust. These two will have you root for their happiness. I love the ending and am curious as to what will come about for Gracie. A fun sweet book on lost love and reconnecting. About regrets and forgiveness and unconditional love and support. So sweet and beauriful
What can I say? It's been hours since I said goodbye to Blake and Chris and I'm already nursing a book hangover.
I found Blake's actions incomprehensible at first but I didn't think any less of her for them. I had a few guesses as to what her big secret would turn out to be but nope, I wasn't even close. She's spent the last decade of her life in a hell of her own making but eventually, I came to understand the reasoning behind her decisions. I just wish that it hadn't taken her so long to acknowledge her mistakes and come clean.
She and Chris shared the truest kind of love and it was well worth being with them on the journey back to each other... but boy, 10 years is a long time to have to wait for an HEA. She's a sassy alpha female, he's a drop dead gorgeous hero with a heart of gold and they complemented each other so well.
I loved the relationship she had with her brother Matthew too. They've been there for each other at the lowest points of their lives and I don't think I've ever 'met' a literary brother and sister who were this close before. It was wonderful!
Note: It's not necessary to have read the first two books in the series to enjoy this one but you're likely to appreciate it more and find the story easier to follow if you start at the beginning.
This is the 3rd book in the Intoxicated series by Alicia Renee Kline - first, read the series in order so you don't feel lost. I'm all in with the series. This installment brings us the story of Blake and Chris. Blake left home when her brother, Matthew was disowned when she was 18. Chris is her brother's best friend and Blake's lost love. They were high school sweethearts and broke up while Matthew was in jail.
Matthew is living his dream - engaged to his love and turns out they are having a baby. So, wedding plans are made quickly. Blake has a secret and hasn't spoken to Chris in 9 years. When she confesses to Chris - I cried with her. It's a doozy of a secret!
Will Chris and Blake find there way back to each other? It's a wonderful story. Ms. Kline sucks you in with well written characters and a easy going plot line. And I have to admit the last page of the story well made me fist pump in my head! I just love them all so much. I wish they were real so I could be friends with them. I hope there isn't a long wait for the next book! I feel I might spontaneously combust waiting on Gracie!
This was a great book about second chances. The second chance for Blake and Chris did not come for about 10 years. Even though I have not read the other two books in this series I did not have a hard time getting into this book. The characters are well developed and it was great to see Blake, Chris and Matthew grow from their teenage years.
Not only was it great to see Blake and Chris reconnect but also it was a journey through Blake's life as she always is there to support everyone around her but not take care of herself. She held an important secret inside for many years just to save everyone else the pain.
The first part of the book was told from present day and past days so you needed to pay attention to those chapters but it helped the story unfold. I love how in the end after all of the pain Chris and Blake fight to be with each other and bring back their love. I will definitely put the other books in this series on my TBR list.
I received a gift copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Once again Alicia Renee Kline aimed to please with her third book into the The Intoxicated series. This series is more of a lighter romance, though it does hit some sensitive materials, they are not too harsh like some books get into. I love Alicia's writing style and she makes and excellent flowing and easy read.
Though you do not have to read the first two books in the series, I would recommend it because you will see the main characters in this one in the other two and get to know them and a little history before this one of their tale. By the time I got to this book, I really wanted to know Blake and Chris's story and what went on and why they are the way today. I loved how Alicia did flashbacks instead of saying well Blake did this and Chris did that, because it just was awesome and like watching a movie in your head. I cannot wait until the next book comes out by this author!
The story starts with Blake who has just helped her brother propose to his girlfriend. Now she will be helping plan the wedding and be a bridesmaid. Then after nine years Chris shows up at her door wanting to be civil. They will both be in the wedding and he wants to talk about what happened. He doesn't know though all the secrets that she has kept from him. Will they be able to get past everything and all the years apart? It's a very sweet romance. They have been apart for so long but Chris helped her become more than a shy girl. The book jumps a lot between the past and present. Thankfully it lets you know what you are reading so you aren't confused. I love the sibling relationship between Matt and Blake. A good quick, fun read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I was so incredibly excited to read Blake and Chris' story. I knew it was going to be a good one and Alicia Renee Kline did not disappoint. I will say for a bit I wasn't Chris' biggest fan, but I get Matthew is his best friend and he didn't like seeing him going through a rough time again. Regardless I knew he was perfect for Blake and he loved her with all his heart. Oh and holy surprises on both parts in this book. I didn't see those coming. The emotions Blake has lived through and in some cases lived through them alone is amazing. It takes a strong person to persevere. Some points I wanted to kick Chris, but really all he was doing was what his one true love asked of him. Great job and way to leave us hanging for the next one!
Totally loved reading the story of Blake and Chris. After reading about Lauren and Matthew in Intoxicated and Shattered, I was excited to read Blake and Chris' story. Well written, well worth reading and very enjoyable. Could not put it down. This series is like reading about your own friends, it is so easy to relate to the characters.
