Finnish Weird is an online and paper mag produced to promote Helsinki’s bid for Worldcon in 2017, and it showcases some of the finest up and coming Finnish SF and F talent. However, it’s quickly apparent from reading it that the lines between SF, Fantasy and Horror, and between magic and reality, are more blurred in Finland than they are in other countries. Finland is a liminal country, caught between east and west, between forest edge and lake shore, and the speculative fiction produced there t ...more

An interesting free sampler that contains a lot of essays and bios and two short stories. Ultimately, it left me wanting more.

“Gordon's Story” is my second exposure to Tiina Raevaara and the biggest takeaway I have is that she likes weird bird concepts. I liked this one a bit more than the one in the “It Came from the North” anthology as it had some interesting musings on the nature of war and prejudice.

“Flow My Tears, Fall from Your Springs!” by Jenny Kangasvuo was an interesting take on a Vani

In the past year I've discovered a taste for the Finnish flavour of Weird, so the when I saw someone mention this on twitter I was all over it, regretting only that it had been out for a few months without me knowing. In part it's a huge tease, because in its author profiles it mentions a whole lot of books I'd love to read but that aren't (yet) translated into English or are difficult to acquire. But it's also exciting, getting a few more tastes of what's out there. There are only two stories i ...more

An interesting introduction to the world of Finnish weird fiction. This consists of a background and introduction to the genre from Johanna Sinisalo and a number of profiles of key authors. The highlight is tge two short stories. Particularly the 'Flow my tears, fall from your springs', which is a beautiful retelling of Aino's story from The Kalevala.
