JoAnn was excited to finally have time off from work- her human job and her fae one. Stocking up on food turned a bit more complicated than she expected when the Squash that she brought home turned out not to be edible in the way she wanted. And worse than that? He's hot.
Ofc I have to write a review of this!!! This is not my usual cup of tea, but I did enjoy in! It was well written, humorous, and altogether wild and silly. Gordy is a cinnamon roll squash man and I love him. Can’t wait to read about his arch nemesis 👀
Have you ever cut up a phallic looking vegetable and wished it was your exes … ??
If you want a fun, cute, quick, and HILARIOUS read pick this up. Given the synopsis and page count I envisioned it as a typical smut book, meaning I didn’t have high expectations for the character or world building. HOWEVER this author managed to world build, get you to care about the characters, and laugh out loud at least 10x all in 56 pages. Jo Ann’s internal dialogue is so relatable and witty, and Gordy<3 deserves the world.
Funny, witty, sexy, creative, this one has it all! I genuinely laughed out loud so many times. Going to get all dressed up next time I go to the store just in case I pass the squash. I WILL be sat for book two
Do you ever read a book and wonder, “How did I end up here?” Well, it takes very little to convince me to read something and if I see one of my bookish friends post a glowing review? Well…color me intrigued.
Fae bargains can be tricky…there’s usually something undisclosed in the deal and you never truly know what you’re going to get.
JoAnn is excited for some time off of work and the newest item she snagged from a trade: a basket that will always yield food (score for the grocery bills!). What JoAnn didn’t bank on? For the Squash that the basket provided to be inedible…and hot.
Oh. My. Gourd. Would I be down to hang with Gordy, an emotionally available, cinnamon roll SquashMan who has vines and knows how to use them? Yes, yes I would.
...Had interesting concept and even started off that way. However, it was another of the types that has the object, alien, etc. have a human (more or less) penis. It was done interestingly enough and the characters were fine for it being a short story.
Otherwise, I wouldn't buy it one bit. And I don't mean in the literally monetary aspect. Especially since the MFC was sceptical of the fae realm, worked for said realm and knew that things were out there tricking anyone and everyone.
Sidebar: Also seemed like there would be more about the FMC mother with the trade. Even with this being so short, better to not mention at all since it didn't go anywhere after she mentioned that that was the only and small price; that she'd rather never hear from her again...
I'd check out another by this author, especially based off the intro. Don't hold back!
Squashed opens up with our hilarious FMC, Joann, working her side hustle at the Fae Market. She can lie while the fae can't, so she makes a good salesperson, which is why they keep her around. On one of her nights at the market, she buys a cornucopia said to always be full of food. Her first attempt at eating said food gets her a cut finger and a random yellow naked man in her kitchen. But Joann just rolls with it, and soon she has a hot yellow man in her bed.
Can we blame her? Absolutely not. We are here for it, and you will be too.
When have you ever read a book about a squash who can shift into a squashman? This was definitely a unique and creative read.
It's difficult to worldbuild in so few pages, but LePlant did a fairly good job considering the word constraints.
There were bits of the novella that were snarky & fun & a little weird, which I loved. I wish there were more of those moments throughout. Though I enjoyed the read, I didn't feel too strongly (positive or negative) about the romance or the characters.
If you’re looking for cringy, bonkers sentient object romance, you’ll have to look elsewhere because this was good! It made me laugh several times and I genuinely enjoyed the lore as well as the relationship between the MCs.
This would be a really good starting place for people not sure about sentient object romance!!
This is the second book of LePlant’s that I’ve read and I like her style of story telling.
Okay, Im not rating this one because it was absolute nonsense and I have no idea how to rate it 😂 only read as I got out free on SYKD
In summary, girl works for the fae, gets given a sentient squash who transforms into a humanoid being, and falls in love with said squash (named Gordy…)
It was fairly well written, easy to follow, and had okay spice. Not much more to say than that
