Cyclones Christmas #2

Holiday Hostilities

Rate this book
It’s the most hateful time of the year…

There’s only one thing Olivia Griswold hates more than her brother’s best friend, Aaron Marino.

The NHL’s favorite playboy has hordes of adoring fans, but to her, he’s still the cocky jerk she’s loathed since high school.

But when Aaron hears Olivia’s spending the holidays with her roommates from hell, he offers her a place to escape to.

His place, to be exact.

In return, all she has to do is be his date to his hockey team’s Christmas gala. It seems simple enough, but Olivia soon discovers that sleeping behind enemy lines is a dangerous game—especially when the enemy looks like that.

Olivia knows she’s playing with fire, but she won’t let herself get burned again.

And they do say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer…

Katie Bailey always delivers, and this book is no exception! From the fantastic banter to the sizzling chemistry, it had me hooked from start to finish. Aaron is the absolute sweetest. Honestly, I love when the main guy remembers all the little details about his girl!

It’s a perfect mix of enemies-to-lovers, brother's-best-friend drama, and hockey shenanigans. Olivia starts off seeing Aaron as the enemy, so you know the back-and-forth tension is gonna be chef's kiss. Their chemistry is off-the-charts amazing. You won’t be able to get enough of these two!

And let’s not forget the side characters, they’re hilarious! The Cyclones feel like one big (chaotic) family, and Olivia’s roommates? Absolute comedy gold. They had me cracking up the whole time.

If you're after a holiday romance that has you laughing out loud and swooning just as hard, this one’s a must-read! Now, excuse me while I go beg for Dallas’s book. 😆

*Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audiobook in exchange for an honest review!*

4.5 out of 5 stars!

I had originally planned on reading the first book in the Cyclones Christmas series, but then I was lucky enough to receive an audiobook ARC for Holiday Hostilities and was too impatient to wait, so I decided to listen to this book first.

The tropes were so well done in this book. We had the brother’s best friend trope, which we all know is so much fun, especially when the main characters have known each other since they were kids. There was also hockey romance—us book girls' newest addiction. And mutual pining, which was done so well that even I could feel the longing they had for each other. And so much more.

I love that our main female character, Olivia, was the grumpy one instead of Aaron, the main male character, who was portrayed as a womanizer and arrogant but turned out to be the complete opposite. He was very caring, observant, and a true gentleman. He definitely became my new book boyfriend.

I recommend this book if you love:

Hockey romance
Reverse grumpy x sunshine
Golden retriever boyfriend
Mutual attraction
"Hating" each other since they were kids
Fake dating
Brother’s best friend
Christmas setting
Enemies to lovers

A nice last half and a good ending along with some character growth bumped this up to three stars, but the first half was just aggravating. How? Stupid and immature characters and plot points that made no sense.

Olivia is snarky and downright mean to Aaron, pro hockey player and her brother’s best friend since childhood, because—I’m almost embarrassed to write this—he didn’t kiss her in high school. For this, she holds a bitter, 10-year grudge, and treats him to a volley of insults and attitude whenever she sees him.

Aaron digs it, though. Because guys just love a bitch, I guess? He has been nursing a thing for Olivia since high school so, though he’s talented, gorgeous, and wealthy, being insulted and ridiculed by Olivia thrills and delights him. He responds with irreverence and imbecilic arrogance just to watch her get more agitated.

Some of the nonsensical plot points the reader is just supposed to accept without question:

*Sports reporters are allowed to attack players about their personal lives during pre- and post-game interviews.
*Team management is willing to demote a team captain because his stalker razzed him on social media.
*Team publicist organizes a charity event tailor-made for stalker to win a date with her victim, then tells victim it’s his job to prevent that from happening.
*Team publicist unearths evidence that stalker has previously used social media harassment to blackmail several victims and suggests—I’m almost embarrassed to write this—her victim can thwart her objectives by appearing to be in a relationship. Why not give that information to reporters or law enforcement or publicly post it? I dunno.

At least the relationship between the two main characters starts to improve at some point. Aaron lets his interest in Olivia show, she realizes she may have misjudged him as an irresponsible playboy, some nice moments around Christmas thaw Olivia’s Grinchy heart, and somehow all this culminates in a public declaration of love instead of a raunchy sex scene. Hallelujah! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Spicy Level: 0/5 Closed Door but there is STEAM, like real steam... from a shower

I don’t think Katie Bailey can write a bad book. This is only the second book I’ve read from her, but she has an amazing ability to craft incredible characters and piece together the cutest plots that keep you hooked and invested from the very beginning.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
Olivia Griswold is a flight attendant who has just made the big decision to leave London and move to Atlanta, where her brother plays professional hockey for the Atlanta Storm. However because he is just starting a new relationship and she doesn't want to impose on his space, she moves in with the roommates of HELL. Olivia also hates Christmas, so when her roommates make it impossible to stay at her apartment she agrees to move into Aaron Marino's house and to be his date to a Christmas Gala. The issue is Aaron loves Christmas, is her brother's teammate and best friend, and is also Olivia's arch-nemesis because he broke her heart as a teenager.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
I loved Olivia, even though she’s my total opposite because I’m a sugar plum fairy when it comes to Christmas, I adore the holiday, but she shows that not everyone feels the same way. She’s the absolute embodiment of a Grinch. She has her reasons for not liking Christmas, but what I admire about her is that she doesn’t let her feelings impact anyone else. That’s a big part of her personality, she doesn’t want to inconvenience anyone. She’s had to grow up quickly, dealing with everything her parents went through. She’s fiercely independent and moving in with someone is a huge step for her because she is always the person who will willingly sacrifice her own comfort and happiness just to avoid putting anyone out. Her efforts might seem admirable to some but ultimately she is punishing herself and it's so heartbreaking.

Aaron is the Elf to her Grinch. He’s all about the holidays. He’s a golden retriever in human form; sweet, enthusiastic, and full of good vibes. Sure, he’s a bit cocky, but honestly, can you even be a first-line professional hockey player without a little cockiness? Underneath it all, he’s the sweetest guy. Someone who is flirty, thoughtful, and incredibly respectful of her boundaries. He’s exactly the kind of MMC you want to see in a romance.

One thing I absolutely love about Katie Bailey’s writing is how she creates rich, full-bodied characters that carry the story to the next level. Even though this is only the second book of hers I’ve read, both stories have left a lasting impression because her characters feel so real and alive.

I love a good grumpy-sunshine trope and love it even more when she is grumpy... AND BOY does this book nail it. It’s one of my favourite dynamics because it opens up so many possibilities for tension, frustration, and, most importantly... delicious banter. And Katie Bailey delivers on the banter. These two are hilarious together, with magnetic, complementary energy that makes their relationship profound and their chemistry untenable.

While this book doesn't have spice, it won't feel like you're missing out. It has one of the BEST steamy water scenes I have ever read and GOD I LOVE THAT TROPE SO MUCH!

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Hockey Romance
▶ Forced Proximity
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ Brother's Best Friend and Teammate
▶ Christmas Romance
▶ Slow Burn
▶ He Falls First
▶ One Bed
▶ Reverse Grumpy Sunshine

and 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▷ Grey Sweatpants
▷ Backwards Cap
▷ Steamy Shower Scene
▷ Soup
▷ View is Amazing (Looking at her)
▷ Nicknames

Overall I adored everything about this! The journey Olivia goes on with her golden retriever hockey player is everything I wanted. This book is a must-read for fans of a grumpy-sunshine romance, with witty banter, and all the festive feels.

2.5 ⭐️

I was really, really looking forward to this book and so I was very disappointed when it was a letdown. There was so incredibly much unnecessary language in this book (no hard curse words, but close) and a lot of crude references. Honestly, it left me feeling a lot like my last Gigi Blume book did, and that was far from great 😬 I’m beginning to think I may have to stop reading new Katie Bailey books too if they continue to be like this. I’m just not comfortable with all the innuendos and crass language.

At 30% (97 pages) into the book, we know Olivia really dislikes (hates) Aaron, but we don’t actually know why. So how exactly are we supposed to dislike him too if we don’t know why we’re supposed to even be disliking him?! It started to feel petty and silly really quickly because of the lack of explanations. All that we had to go off of was her dislike of him. While I typically love the enemies-to-lovers trope, this one was definitely not it for me.

There were a few small moments that I slightly enjoyed in this story, but they definitely weren’t enough to override all the negative aspects of this book. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, clean romance.

I think I’m running out of nice and creative ways to say “PLEASE READ THIS BOOK”. Especially when it comes to Katie Bailey Christmas books. I’m turning into a broken record at this point but the way she writes banter between not only the main characters, but also all the side characters, is my all time favorite! Olivia and Aaron were So. Much. Fun. I will absolutely be re-reading this soon! Oh and the Maddie & Seb cameos in this book made me smile so hard!! I love this fictional hockey team. They feel like the best kind of big loving family and the way they all support each other and show up for each other is so special! Cannot wait for the next book that’s hinted at the end!!! And to reiterate my first point; PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!

Reread update: the audiobook is 10/10 AMAZING! Pretty much listened to it in one sitting!

Katie Bailey does it again!

I'm a big fan of the Cyclones Christmas series, and book two did not disappoint!

I beta-read this for Katie, and received an ARC from Booked with the Emilys! These are my honest thoughts.

AARON IS MY NEW FAVORITE KATIE BAILEY MAN! I love that he isn't who he seems... I adored the callbacks to other people from the KBU (Katie Bailey Universe), like Aaron going on a date with Holly from The Quit List and getting to see Maddie and Seb so much again in this one! I thought the team and their banter brought so much fun to this story. And... I truly loved Olivia. She was snappy and funny and sensitive and thoughtful.

Aaron and Olivia are enemies-to-lovers in this sorta second-chance romance between brother's best friend/teammate and little sister. They both have their walls up, for various reasons, yet they find themselves in a forced proximity/roommate situation because Olivia's housing situation is horrendous (and funny), and Aaron wants to take care of her.

Read this if you love:
- Enemies-to-lovers
- Redemption from high school
- Roommate nightmares (underwear thief, bagpipes, and one who always needs help with something... lol)
- Forced proximity
- "You're not staying here" -> roommates
- Inside jokes
- Grinch (Olivia, anti-Christmas) and Grinch (Aaron, reserved grumpypants)
- The cutest Christmas date
- Brother's best friend
- Found family
- Professional hockey player x flight attendant
- FAKE DATING because of a PR nightmare
- Professional hockey team shenanigans (so excited to find out who will be next!) ;)
- SUPER thoughtful MMC
- Closed door romance
- It's always been you ~vibes~
- Meddling brothers, Italian grandmas, and Italian mamas

This one should be on everyone's holiday TBR this year! Out November 22nd! :)

EDITING TO ADD: The audiobook is SO FUN. I loved both narrators and thought they brought the fun banter and chemistry to life! The audiobook is out December 17th and is one you should definitely check out!

4.5⭐️ im putting aaron marino on my christmas list this year.

this book was the epitome of holiday cuteness. highschool one sided enemies to lovers brothers best friend? SIGN ME UP ✍️✍️ aaron was really BoyObsessed™️ and literally loved his girl since Day 1. Olivia was the perfect sassy takes-no-bs FMC and she’s me and i am her.

THE BANTER IN THIS BOOK>>> personally i love myself some childish teasing and bullying especially in this book. and the hockey aspects were 🤌🤌 all the little games and HIM DOING A HEART AT THE CAMERA FOR HER😭😭 the overall feel was just so cutesy and it was perfect for the beginning of the holiday season!!🎄🎄

Maybe it was my mood at the time, but I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I expected. I’m so surprised, especially with how much I loved Season’s Schemings last year. I will say, Katie Bailey writes the best heat and tension without venturing into open-door spice! It's exactly what I want in a closed-door romance.

Olivia’s feisty personality and misguided opinions of Aaron led to some fantastic banter and undeniable chemistry. Aaron, of course, loved getting a rise out of her! Their romance was full of simmering tension and seriously fiery kisses!

Aaron’s bond with his teammates was sweet, and I loved seeing Olivia create new, happier holiday memories. But for some reason, the humour (like the roommates) and the overall plot didn’t quite work for me. The stalker storyline, in particular, felt strange—why wouldn’t they report each incident?

(heat level: kissing only)

Another fun one from Katie! She knows how to bring the heat and tension while still remaining closed door! Even though this one is kissing only, this one definitely has some language, innuendo and talk of sex so keep that in mind if you are looking for a super innocent book. This is such a fun series!

Guys. I’m obsessed with this team!

Aaron & Olivia had the best chemistry! Even their “hate” was full of chemistry because we all knew Aaron was already gone for her.

Brother’s best friend is seriously such a great trope and then forced proximity with her dislike of him….ahhhh ITS ALWAYS GONNA BE A GOOD TIME!!

I loved seeing Olivia soften up and finally really SEE Aaron and not just assume the worst about him.

Chapter 29 was *chefs kiss*

I’m WAAAIIITTTIINNNGGG for book 3! It’s sure to be a blast. 😏

5/5 stars

*NOT CF! Moderate use of language and innuendo.*

DID YOU SURVIVE THAT KISS?

BLOG || INSTAGRAM || TIKTOK

Everyone kept mentioning this one kissing scene in Holiday Hostilities and hot DANG. They were RIGHT. Deliver me a swoony, sexy (but not open door) kissing scene and I am a goner. Praise be.

ANYWAYS. This book was great. I loved it. I had such a great time with the dynamic and banter between Olivia and Aaron. Call me smitten. I loved all of the nuanced details that showcased just how gone these two were for each other and the passion speaks for itself.

There was a small sub plot involving an obsessed and delusional side chick that I didn’t love. Just not my cup of tea for the drama of choice buuut it didn’t ruin the book for me. I was a still a goner for these two. Plenty of hockey action, some good holiday moments and now I have become a Katie Bailey fan.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Christmas Sports Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: closed door

Off the charts! This book had me giggling and kicking my feet nonstop! I could not put it down because I was having such a good time. I honestly debated giving it 5 stars on vibes but it was just missing a certain je ne sais quoi

Okay, this was my first book I've read by Katie , but now I think I am hooked! This story was so great! Tropes like enemies to lovers, housemates, forbidden love, best friends sister, forced proximity, and all happening at Christmas! Once again we have a THIN line between love and hate.... Olivia and Aaron are known for their hate for each other. They are always at odds, and always teasing each other. But do they really despise each other or is all of that their way of keeping their feelings in check?!

When Olivia needs a place to spend Christmas and Aaron needs help getting a stalker away from him they call a truce and help each other. She moves in with him for a few weeks, and she bids on him at the charity auction- to keep the stalker from winning. They think it's all a safe bet, given they can't stand each other. So no one is bothered that the two are now room mates. But a whole lot of forced proximity, movie nights, scramble, meals, parties, etc. Start to pull down all their reasons for hating each other and THAT is when things get tricky. They aren't supposed to date. He would be at risk of losing his position as captain if anymore relationship drama hits the press. And most of all... Olivia is Jake (Aarons best friend's) little sister. A relationship can't happen. Plus, she's moving out soon.... and that's that. But is it?!

This story was wonderful. It was definitely a more steamier read than my normal, and it also had some innuendo and mild language. But all in all, it was still a closed door romance, which was just what I was looking for! All in all 4.5 rounded to 5 for me. I can't wait to read the next book!

So glad Katie Bailey gave us more books for the Atlanta Cyclones! I love these stories so much. And this one was no different, I was hooked from the first page. I giggled, laughed, swooned, smiled, sighed, and so much more! Its got tension, drama, and comedy!

Aaron and Olivia had the best enemies to more, brother's best friend, off-limits vibes and tension. Just perfect! They had such delightful banter and underlying tension. And their slow build was perfection. They were perfect for each other. And their story had that extra layer of drama/mystery to it that was so perfect for them. I also loved that Aaron didn't hold back when it came to Olivia and his feelings. And she felt at home and settled with him.

The side characters were hilarious and added such fun to the story. I hope Bailey brings us even more stories from the other Cyclones like Dallas and Triple J! My cheeks hurt from laughing so much and I didn't want it to end!

Loved it! This was another winner for Katie Bailey! The fiery banter, the heat without the spice, and the holiday cheer were fabulous!

It's a wonderful mix of enemies-to-lovers, brother's-best-friend, and hockey team escapades. I

I adored Aaron and Olivia. Aaron is the sweetest! It’s hard not to fall for a guy who has been secretly obsessed for years with his girl. He’s funny, flirty, and has such a big heart.

Olivia was wonderful with her sass and spunk! It was super sweet watching her fall in love with Aaron and with Christmas again.

What I loved:
Enemies to lovers
Brother's best friend
Roommate forced proximity
Dual POV
Teammates banter
Nonna
Olivia’s crazy roommates
Justin Bieber
That first kiss
The skating date
An MMC who falls both first and harder

I genuinely love everything about this book. Beyond the fiery banter and the sassy back and forth, this is a sweet and tender love story. It’s one I’ll definitely be rereading.

If you enjoy holiday romances, this one is a must-read!

𝐻𝑜𝓁𝒾𝒹𝒶𝓎 𝐻𝑜𝓈𝓉𝒾𝓁𝒾𝓉𝒾𝑒𝓈 is my first book by Katie Bailey and now I just want to devour every book she's ever written. I absolutely adored this book! It had just the right mix of romantic tension, bickering and wholesomeness. It also deals so well with themes of grief and finding where you belong. This story is just so heartwarming and had me laughing out loud at times.

The romance was quite literally perfection and I loved that it was dual POV because Aaron's POV is my new obsession! Olivia and Aaron are amazing characters individually and as a couple. The author says she writes cute, fluffy, feel-good rom coms and that is so accurate. Their relationship felt like a warm hug. I wouldn't say it was enemies to lovers though, I would say it's more one sided hate to love. The pacing of the romance was done perfectly, I loved that we got such great bickering and banter. It didn't feel too rushed or drawn out, they gradually start to bond and we get to actually see them together too. Everything I could want! And NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP!! The revolution is here I can feel it

As well as great main characters there is also a whole cast of really loveable side characters! I loved the contrasting family dynamics with Olivia and her family and Aaron and his. And the Marino family shenanigans were so cute. But I especially loved the found family in this and seeing a character like Olivia, who I really related to, find her place and be welcomed was lovely to read about. I'm going to need a Dallas book real quick!

This book is sweet and fluffy, there is no spice which I actually appreciated and the author still infuses the more intimate scenes with So. Much. Tension. and yearning. Holiday Hostilities is very character focused, it's pretty low stakes and doesn't have any unnecessary drama. The characters and romance are so entertaining and endearing, I was hooked.

If you're looking for a new book boyfriend, Aaron Marino is your man. I am officially obsessed, he is such a gentleman, a golden retriever, just the sweetest ever🩵

And if you're looking for the perfect holiday romcom, this is it! This is a must read if you want to swoon and laugh and fall in love with every character

#Review: *Holiday Hostilities* - Katie Bailey - ARC
4.8/5✨
0/5🌶️
[Super fun]

Hockey romance books are one of my absolute favourites! They're always lifting my mood up and I'm so happy that I got this opportunity, to receive an advanced copy. Thank you so, so much Katie!!

Olivia is the little sister of hockey player, Jack. Of course, he was pretty protective of her and forbidden his teammates to get near her. That's why Aaron, his friend and teammate, tried his best not to deceit his friend's trust. But that will affect his relationship with Olivia, who became his enemy after just one wrong step from Aaron.

After a couple of years being away, Olivia is decided to stay near her brother and she changes her job as fly attended from Europe to US. But her salary doesn't compare with the one her brother has, so she was now living in a small apartment, which doesn't even offer the best conditions: neither as aspect, nor roommates. That's the reason why she will end up staying in her enemy's house, Aaron.
Besides that, a very obnoxious stalker tries to ruin Aaron's hockey career. That's where Olivia comes in hand and helps him, a bit, with that issue. Of course, that will force them to be in close proximity and those feelings that they were trying to keep within themselves will be harder to hide.

First of all, this book made me laugh so, so much! I had such a great time following Aaron, Olivia and all the hockey players. They were hilarious in every way possible! Second of all, Olivia's insecurities were so genuine and I liked that she was built as a normal person, who was struggling with day to day problems. Her life wasn't easy at all and I was glad when she found a piece of happiness within her brother's circle of friends.

I really liked this book, having an amazing time reading it. From my point of view, it had the perfect ingredients to be a lovable story and I enjoyed every minute of it.
