Siren of the Seas’ summer season is starting to wind down. Although thrilled at the thought of returning to a warmer climate, Alaska has captured Millie’s heart and she’s sad at the thought of leaving the picturesque paradise behind.
Sharky’s girlfriend Elvira Cobb has managed to finagle an invitation to travel to Alaska and learn about gold mining operations firsthand. She sends Sharky cryptic messages alluding to her location yet not coming right out and telling him where she is.
Annoyed that she didn’t run it by him first, and not a fan of surprises, the couple argue. Elvira’s last words to Sharky is that he won’t have to worry about her bothering him again.
After cooling off, Sharky tries reaching Elvira to apologize and invite her to cruise on board Siren of the Seas. He’s met with silence. Thinking she’s still angry, he figures a little time will settle ruffled feathers…until Elvira’s sister Dernice contacts him in a panic. Elvira is in jail; being held for a crime she swears she didn’t commit.
A frantic Sharky enlists the help of Millie and friends to help figure out what exactly happened and prove Elvira’s innocence. It’s going to take their combined sleuthing skills to rescue Elvira who may have finally taken on a little more than she can handle after becoming Waylaid in Whittier.

Millie gets involved in a search for gold, on her last day in Alaska.
Siren of the Seas is returning to warmer waters, and of course Millie is in the Middle of a mystery. Elvira, from the Savannah series is in Alaska stirring up trouble. This book seem a little boring to me.. Kinda hard to believe. Looking forward to more mysteries in warmer waters.
I have read every one of Millie's adventures. I enjoyed them all until now. Did not like this one very much. Slow and tedious and not on the ship. Oh well. You can can't win them all.
Those familiar with Hope Callaghan's MADE IN SAVANNAH series will understand my statement "Oh Elvira!". This crossover character is in Alaska learning all she can about mining for gold in her never ending quest to find treasure. She plans on surprising Sharky, the head of maintenance on the Siren of the Seas cruise line, which is on it's final voyage to Alaska before heading back to Miami and the Caribbean circuit, by returning back home with him on the cruise. Sharky is not a fan of surprises!
Elvira always finds a way to find trouble and this trip to Alaska is no different. She's arrested on charges of assault on her only friend in Alaska. Sharky, Millie and their band of mystery solving friends set off to solve the mystery of who attacked this friend and free Elvira before the ship sets sail the following day. It's quite a challenge, but not for Millie's crew!
This series is a delight, complete with twists and turns, wonderful characters and, as always, a recipe at the end that will have you in the kitchen when you finish the book. I highly recommend all of Hope's series as each one will captivate your attention and keep you coming back for more!!!!
Elvira is up to her old tricks trying to find gold in Alaska. Millie, her friends and the cruise ship are making a stop in Whittier, Alaska before returning to the warmer water and clime of the Caribbean. But it seems that mystery and mayhem follow Millie wherever she goes, and Alaska is not an exception! Elvira seems to have problems follow her - like being jailed in Whittier on assault charges - and it’s going to take her boyfriend Sharkey, Millie and others to dig her out of this one! Another fun adventure for Millie and friends. I received an advance copy of this book from the author and write this review voluntarily.
With a spin out from her Savanna series, Ms. Callaghan adds Elvira to the book. We’ve heard about Elvira going to Alaska to look for gold, I just didn’t expect her to be in one of Millie‘s books! When Elvira decides to go to Whittier Alaska, where the cruise ship was docking, Elvira was going to meet with Sharky and spend some time on the cruise ship with him. When a snafu comes up and she’s arrested for attacking somebody, the cruise ship sleuths come out to help her. Can they find out who attacked her friend before the ship sales away forever you’ll have to read it to find out!
Another exciting, intriguing Alaskan cruise adventure with cruise director and Millie Armati and her Siren of the Seas Super Sleuth team. Add Sharky and the drama with his girlfriend Elivera Cobb (from the Made in Savannah Mystery series) and Waylaid in Whittier is a page turning who dun it read. Hope Callaghan’s descriptive succinct writing brings cruise life, gold mining, driving through Alaskan tunnels, sleuthing, and the Alaskan town of Whittier to life. Recipe for Alaskan Salmon Pie included.
Light adventure, superlative friendships, a bit of comedic mishap and you have a “Millie” mystery to enjoy. Every character becomes identifiable (even if you’re bad with names and they aren’t regulars), so you know who is doing what and when. Family isn’t always blood related and this series proves that caring about each other, being there when needed, can form a family bond that transcends traditional beliefs.
Always a fun story with Millie, Sharky, Cat, and Annette. Adding Elvira from the Savannah books was great. Elvira is something else. Selfish and treasure happy it is hard to believe how many people are willing help her. Now we are in Alaska and gold mining with Elvira and trouble is in the cards.
What a great read! There were twists and turns and even someone I didn’t expect to be in Alaska. But what a great adventure it was with Millie and the gang. I have enjoyed the journeys in Alaska and I’m sad to see to leave…but I’m ready for some warm weather mysteries with Millie and the gang in the islands! Cheers to more adventures on Siren of the Seas!
As usual an excellent Millie and friends adventure mystery, adding the twist of the “crazy Elvira”. Of course, already set for the next - who is this Jose and is he going to break Annette’s heart again, alienate her from her friends, be evil and on the run from authorities or is he her forever guy? Only the author knows.
I can always count on Hope Callaghan to deliver a top notch read! When Elvira, from the Made in Savannah series, visits Alaska, she does what she does best…stir up trouble. This well-written book has believable characters and plenty of action and humor. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Another great job Hope. I really like the way you dropped Elvira right in the middle of everything, doing what she does best, stirring the pot. Can't wait for your next book, love them all.
Millie and the gang are investigating another mystery involving Sharon's girlfriend, Elvira. Fantastic storytelling, great scenery description, and enjoyable characters made this another terrific read.
Another fun cross over book with the Savannah series. Is there still gold to be found in Alaska? Read on to find out. The Alaska cruise series is a nice change of pace from the Caribbean. No murder this time, which is also pleasant.
Hope has a real talent and I love all her books. I never figured out who did it. You can start anywhere in any of her series but I like to read in order. It is like visiting old friends.
Elvira is in trouble again. Thankfully she has the Siren of the Seas crew to rescue her. With winter almost upon Alaska, Elvira is headed back to Savannah to give Carlitta and Pete headaches.
I have loved all the other Millie cruise ship books. But this one, not so much. It was more about Whittier and gold mining and Elvira the Millie and the rest of the crew. They were all in it, but not the same as usual obviously.
I was remembering our crude to Alaska(which is still my favorite). Elvira had one of even her best adventures and most dangerous. It is always fun to see how she gets out of her jams.
It's nice to keep characters from different series in touch with each other. The plot was great and it kept me reading at a quick pace. Excellent work. I'll be waiting for the next one in this series.
Elvira just can't stay out of trouble or away from a chance at finding treasure, even when she knows better. The Siren of the Seas crew pals have to help her out of Alaska or else.
It really is a shame to see this series - as an extension of the original Millie series - going downhill. It feels like the author is rushing and the stories are falling flat. Bringing Elvira to this series now and then only makes things worse. Not sure I'll continue with this series.
Whittier, Alaska meets Savannah, Georgia in this easy read. Millie and the crew help Elvira Cobb - Sharky's girlfriend - clear her name. Nice, clean, easy read
