Chihiro Rokuhira’s father, Kunishige, is the most famous swordsmith in the land. Thanks to his six enchanted blades, the war that has been gripping the nation ends, and peaceful days follow. After the war, he retrieves all six blades and hides them in the cellar of his workshop—but sorcerers raid his home and leave Kunishige dead in front of Chihiro. Many years later, Chihiro wields Kunishige’s seventh and final enchanted blade on a mission to retrieve the stolen swords!

The Shinuchi—the strongest sword ever produced by Kunishige—is up for auction. Chihiro’s on a quest to reclaim the famed blade, but first he’ll have to deal with the auction’s guards, who are sworn to protect the auction at all costs. Undaunted in his quest for vengeance, Chihiro vows to cut them all down!

"Hey, now! Don't you love me?"
"We love you."
"Of course we do."
"Well, that's good. As it so happens, I love you too. Because we have that bond, we can never truly be separated."

Before my review starts, I want to say that the cover artworks for this series haven't disappointed me even once so far. It's a fire design after a fire design, and this volume's cover is my favorite so far.

"I just wanted my beloved father to say I was amazing." [Hakuri]

In volume four we got a continuation of the showdown between our heroes and the Sazanami clan, and there are plenty of awesome fights, yes, but the focus is also put on the emotional family relationships, with the main one being the matter of the Sazanami brothers. First of all, I'm stunned that the psychopathic actions of one of the brothers were tolerated and went by without any consequences. The family acted ashamed of one of the brothers, because he was weak in their eyes, but they weren't ashamed of another brother, who was straight up a torturer. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Second of all, as much as the subplot of Hakuri and Tenri were small, it had an impact, on me at least. You might judge Tenri for his behaviour towards his brother, but both of them, Tenri and Hakuri, are victims of their father's actions. The villain of this arc is Kyora Sazanami, whose arrogance, selfishness and high manipulation tendencies brought his children to the point of no return. All those boys wanted was to make him proud and he used this pure, childish need and their love for him against them. He thinks of himself as high and mighty, but Chihiro will make him pay for everything. Mark my words.

"You poor thing. You're the one imprisoned in a cage. Living in such a tiny space, you lose sight of your true value."

Except for the family matters, this volume is also heavily focused on Hakuri's rise to the glory, which I enjoyed a lot (and which broke my heart in tiny million pieces). He always believed that he was weak and because of that, he was bullied and tortured by people who were supposed to protect him. They never saw any value in him and, as a result, he never saw any value in himself as well. He ended up feeling ashamed of himself and, instead of feeling like a victim that he had every right to feel like, he blamed himself for being bullied. He so desperately wanted to be useful, not powerful like his family members, but useful, and this need was something that was his driving force and still is his driving force. He lived in a cage, bullied by the hands of others and by his own as well, and he never realized it until an encounter with a mysterious girl opened his eyes and until he got an opportunity to know Chihiro.

"This will be the final year of the Rakuzaichi. We'll do it together." [Chihiro]

"Let's get to that door. We'll end this. Together." [Hakuri]

The rise of Hakuri was glorious and so incredibly satisfying, I love it a lot. All he needed was to feel that somebody's there for him, that somebody trusts him and believes in him and has his back. Chihiro is that person, and through his influence, Hakuri found the strength he needed to face of his family. It was beautiful to witness and I'm so happy that these two have each other.

"There is nothing you can do, so why don't we take our time and have a little chat?"
"What?"
"You don't mind? I'm curious to see what's grown from the seeds of hatred I sowed all those years ago."

This was a big surprise for me, understandably so, because I believed that the only people we would have to face in this volume were the Sazanami clan members. What also surprised me was how emotional Chihiro acted here. We've seen the glimpses of this throughout the previous volumes, but it was especially visible here. I liked this showdown a lot. It was relatively short and not as spectacular as the rest of the fights, but incredibly impactful nonetheless and showed us who we really need to deal with in this story. And that's scary.

I was at your side the entire time. I won't let you die like this. Die as mine at my side. [Chihiro]

I remember how emotionally attached I was to a ship in One Piece so much so that in a certain scene it made me bawl my eyes out. This is how attached Kagurabachi made me to the Enchanted Blades, so much so that I cried a river while reading this volume. These aren't just normal swords, and I don't mean it because they are more powerful than anything else in this universe. They are special, because they are made by Kunishige Rokuhira, Chihiro's father. It's his legacy, the thing that Chihiro's fighting for and his attachment to his father. And I love Chihiro so much already, no wonder I couldn't hold back tears and I'm afraid that I will need to get through this heartbreak again (I don't want to, please don't make me).

Anyways, it was a fantastic volume, full of excitement and emotional impact, I'm in love and I'm jumping to the next one as we speak! I wonder how this arc will end! ☺️

This is the first volume in the series that is a 3.5 for me and the .5 is because it started picking up in the latter half of the last chapter.

The pacing has gotten better, or I’ve simply become immune to it, but it’s still missing something for me. The characters are a bit milquetoast. Even Shiba, who we see is being set up to be the ‘all powerful mentor’ figure in these series. It’s not using its introduced characters well and when you do meet someone you want to be more invested in –poof– they go bye bye. This has been consistent since volume 1.

Due to my very average response to what I consider an average manga (I’ve read 4 volumes and I think that’s enough time to decide if it’s worth continuing or not), I decided to check some reviews to see what others were saying about it. Nearly every review spoke highly of this and, sure, they’re different strokes for different folks, but personally, this is simply an “ok” manga. Just ok. Average at best, truly.

I will read volume 5 because as mentioned, the latter final chapter of this volume made me want to see where it leads (and of course, because I bought it on Amazon). However, moving forward, this seems like a series I will be happy with getting spoilers for. Or if it gets an anime adaptation, I’d watch. As for biting the rest of the physical copies, I don’t see myself continuing to do that.

“I’m curious to see what’s grown… from the seeds of hatred I sowed all those years ago.”

teamwork and chosen families… doesn’t take much to please me. i have found a new favorite series. might even be top 5, dare i say top three 🫣. god, there are so many tragic stories in this, it’s TOO GOOD. this is like on the same level of Bleach for me. the complexity of the characters? family values? love? betrayal??

the art continues to be a slay, and although it’s quite simple, the mangaka draws eyes so beautifully. they convey so much emotion UGH

when i have money i will be collecting this series🙂‍↕️

4.5 🌟

Kagurabachi is genuinely 4/4 right now like I actually can't believe how peak this shit is like omfgggggg. I think so far this is probably my 2nd favorite volume like this was sooooo good I loved actually everything about this. I am lowkey pissed this is so early on and on going cause I only got 2 more printed volumes and then a couple chapters that aren't printed yet that I can read but after that I gotta wait each time to read just 1 single chapter like I need this whole manga NOWWWWW I need to know how this story is going to progress I'm obsessed.

“Die as mine at my side.”

Unironically, this is the best and coolest shonen running right now. The storytelling is on a completely different level than any of its contemporaries~

3.5 ⭐️ Not sure what it’s going to take to get me to 4 stars with this series but I’m still intrigued. Main character, and a few side characters have so much potential.

Why would I not love a magic heist!?! The Rakuzaichi arc is everything and I cannot get enough of this story. Yes, I teared up at Hakuri's flashbacks, thanks for asking. 😭 And yes, I'm kind of obsessed with this manga lol.

The cover is beautiful as always! 😍 Love seeing both of the boys together 🫶🏻
