The first graphic novel in an explosive new series based on the smash-hit RPG YouTube series by Dingo Doodles and Felix Irnich.
Written alongside award-winning comic-book writer Christopher Hastings (Adventure Time, Five Nights at Freddy’s), Fool’s Gold is a chaotic, imaginative, and hilarious adventure story that follows a group of real-life friends as they embark on a role-playing campaign filled with dragons, vengeful witches, and deadly karaoke.
A stoic masked druid, a cursed monkey sorcerer, and a bubbly magical girl are among the adventurers in a party searching for powerful crystals left behind by an ancient dead civilization...but their plans are derailed when an afternoon of drunken karaoke kicks off nothing short of the apocalypse. That’s just how things go when you’re in a fantasy role-playing session with gamemaster Felix and player Dingo. These two are your guides to the bizarre and hilarious world of tabletop role-playing, the delight of collaborative storytelling, and the chaos of letting the dice decide what happens next.
I have been following this as an animated series on YouTube since the first episode was released.... 7 years ago. Damn. Okay. That's crazy.
But I have always vouched for the concept of it being turned into a comic series and, when it was announced, I was ECSTATIC to see this (beautiful) b&w animatic series turn into a physical color format!
It blew my expectations out of the water!
The formatting of the comic itself is very clever and smart, carrying the same comedic charm of the animation series, which is something I was surprisingly happy with! The comedic hints didn't take away from the intensity of the story, nor did it cheapen it up in any way. I loved the storytelling, as expected from a DND tale, but also the ways in which the illustrations portrayed emotions. This was the perfect story to adapt into a comic style and it did so perfectly! The hints of DND mechanics throughout the pages made me laugh out loud sometimes, and overall, made it all really charming. I liked the fact that some of the basic rules were explained to the reader in a way that didn't seem text-book standard or boring, so those who don't play DND could understand the basic dynamics as well.
One of my favorite parts of seeing this in a comic format is actually seeing the characters interact more. I love seeing the dynamics of the characters, and also bearing witness to scenes that didn't come up in the animatics! I'm excited to see more "secret" content. Especially since this story is being handled so passionately—the story and how it's told IS 10/10. The characters are incredibly memorable and diverse.
To add, the coloring is beyond GORGEOUS!!! The shadows are so rich and the color palettes are so satisfying. Thought and passion definitely went into this. I would catch myself staring at some pages for minutes before I could turn the page. The posing choices are exquisite as well; Gothi's character is SOOOOOOOO beautiful, I love the earth tones, she is my wife.
Based on the YouTube RPG Fool's Gold, this is a graphic adventure telling of some of the adventures hosted by Jenna Woldenga and Felix Irnich. The party has a stoic masked druid, a cursed monkey sorcerer, and a magical girl among the party along with a mechanical dragon. The fun really begins when Sips the monkey decides to do karaoke while drunk. Very bad decision! Magical mayhem ensues and then the real bad guys surface and the gang has to face some of Sip's past enemies to survive. Nicely paced adventure with appropriate art and color scheme that ends with a teaser for volume 2!
Thanks Netgalley and Gallery Books for the chance to enjoy this volume!
I knew I would love this, but I wasn't expecting the narrative format to be the same style as the videos. It took a few pages to get used to, but its so damn charming and lets the story stand out from other D&D campaign books, like the Adventure Zone graphic novels or the Critical Role books. The CYOA section in the middle? Perfection. I love it. Give me more. The art? Amazing. I await the rest of these books (and the next episode, please oh please) very anxiously.
This also works as a great gateway book for people who don't play the game. If you've been meaning to rope your friends into the world of Dungeons and Dragons, this might help.
This is probably the best graphic novel I’ve ever read, it’s so well drawn and narrated. The book manages to be, hilarious, impactful and exciting all at the same time and I can’t wait for them to release the next one. There were also so many interesting little details throughout the book which makes it one of the unique books where you can re-read it over and over and still be entertained.
It’s cute! I’ve marked the author to follow on Goodreads so I can see if they do another book. Definitely a rpg group being rpg characters but that’s fun! I game. If you game you’ll enjoy it if you want a light silly read!
As a huge fan of the YouTube series that was the inspiration for this comic, this was a fantastic adaptation! It changed enough of the story to keep me guessing, the artwork is very nice, the comic timing is exceptional, and the drama is fantastic! In short, I loved every moment of it!
9/10 A fantastic adaptation of my favorite YouTube series. Has a wonderful artstyle that fits the mood of the Fools Gold universe. The one problem I had was the "Choose Your Side Quest" felt poorly implemented although having dice involved was a good idea for a book about D&D. One of my favorite YouTube series honestly adapted in a way that retained the spirit of the OG series.
