His faithful K-9 companion reunited him with his fate.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the 5th book in the Protectors at K-9 Ranch series. I read the first four books in this series before picking up this book. I read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I really enjoyed the audiobook. I enjoyed this book a lot. This book had me guessing. I loved the dog in this book. It did drive me crazy Zoe would not just open up, but I understand why. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
Julie Miller has penned another entertaining romantic suspense with this second chance romance featuring Veteran Marine Master Sgt Levi Callahan and Kansas City Crime lab tech Zoe Stockman. Oh, we get and a truly terrible and creepy villain.
Levi & Zoe connect up in July when Levi is home on leave pending his final 6 months in the Marine corps. He returns overseas and they promise to keep up letters and for a while Zoe does correspond with him. But then she drops off the face of the Earth, seemingly, and ghosts him.
Levi is injured and spends his final several weeks in recovery, all the while upset that Zoe won't talk to him. He returns home with his K9 Sky convinced it's over with Zoe.
As it turns out, Zoe has had her own trials to deal with. She suffers from panic attacks and somehow she has acquired a stalker who is terrorizing her and threatening everybody she knows. Her coping skills are seriously taxed. So she had felt that she was doing the best she could erasing Levi from her life. The problem is she is carrying Levi's child and desperate for her stalker to not find out.
Can these two find their way back to each other? Or has too much happen to rip them apart.? Zoe did a pretty good job of throwing Levi away and he's justifiably hurt. Beneath the hurt, these two really care about each other despite Levi becoming additionally upset when he learns about the baby. But what about her stalker?
The first third of the story is sort of episodic and I found it a bit hard to get into. Hence the .5 deduction from a perfect 5 star read. Overall it's a solid romance with two broken people who ultimately need each other. And Julie Miller knows how to open a terrific Marine hero.
Crime Scene K-9 by Julie Miller Protectors at K-9 Ranch series #5. Harlequin Intrigue. Romantic suspense, second chance troupe. Spin off from multiple prior series. Can be read as a stand-alone. Home after final deployment, Master Sergeant Levi Callahan and his K-9 partner Sky want to find Zoe Stockman. He thought they had a committed future together but she ghosted him for some reason. He suspects there is something wrong and that she’s trying to keep them safe. Levi wants to protect her too.
PTSD, secrets, and communication as well as trying to protect keep this couple apart. They have to work at all to be able have a future. Trust too. I admire them both for wanting to protect but self sacrifice may not be the answer. I loved how family was there too in times of need (couples and locations from prior books and series). Fact action, heroes, support and love. Plus a good dog. Win!
Levi and Zoe meet in July while Levi is home on leave before his final six months in the Marine Corps. They promise to stay in touch when he returns overseas, and for a while, Zoe writes to him. But then she suddenly cuts off contact. Levi gets injured and spends his final weeks recovering, upset that Zoe has ghosted him. When he finally returns home with his K9 partner, Sky, he assumes their relationship is over.
Unbeknownst to Levi, Zoe has been dealing with a stalker who is terrorizing her and threatening those around her. To protect Levi, she feels her only option is to cut him out of her life. She’s terrified and emotionally drained as she faces this nightmare alone. But Levi, determined to find out the truth, refuses to give up. He senses Zoe is in danger, and his protective instincts only add to the tension. Despite the challenges, Levi is committed to eliminating the threat so they can rebuild their love and create the future they dream of, especially with their baby on the way.
Levi, Zoe and Skye were great throughout the book’s timeline. One thing that I personally loved was that the book started after Levi and Zoe met and showed the tumultuous relationship at the beginning and the struggles of having one significant other deployed and/or injured in the line of duty.
Levi struggled to keep his emotions in check after his injury which was greatly portrayed for individuals that may suffer from PTSD after their time in the service which was also mentioned. Zoe’s character wasn’t as emotionally developed as Levi’s in my opinion but she still played a great role. I did like having The Photographer’s side of things at the end of the chapter rather than having a whole chapter dedicated to that person.
I don’t usually like reading intrigue or suspenseful/mystery books but this had just the right amount of all of the above plus the little sprinkles of romance as well!
This was an audio ARC that I jumped into without realizing that this was the 5th book in an existing series. With that being said, I don't think that I missed too much. There were times that things were mentioned from prior books, but there was enough information given that I didn't feel lost.
We are introduced to FMC Zoe Stockman who is a crime scene technician. She meets MMC Master Sergeant Levi Callahan at a barbeque when Levi was on leave from his deployment. They hit it off, but then Levi had to go back overseas. The good news was that he was going to be retiring from the military and would be home in 6 months. They both seemed smitten and vowed to keep in touch, facetime. write letters; anything to keep in touch.
Levi was a K9 handler with his K-9 partner, Sky. I absolutely loved their relationship. They were PARTNERS and had developed trust as well as a great working relationship.
Somewhere along the way. something changed and Zoe stopped responding to Levi. She stopped writing, texting, and even changed her number. Levi, without having any other information, felt like he had been ghosted and became angrier and angrier because he felt like he at least deserved an explanation.
Without going into spoilers, something DID happen to Zoe. She was the target of a devious stalker, one who was watching her every move and who threatened to hurt each and every person she loved if she didn't follow his instructions. This was actually where things came in from previous books.
Apparently, there was a killer in the past who had targeted Levi's sister and dated Zoe (maybe, I'm not exactly sure about the specifics because all of this occurred in the prior books) and this new stalker was exhibiting similar characteristics to the one that was already in prison.
I really liked Levi and Sky as characters. Levi was a great character whose strengths got to shine. He is at his core a protector, but he also is a Marine who is a problem solver and together with his partner Sky, the two of them are not used to backing down.
Zoe was a complicated character. She suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks and unfortunately, that made it easier for the "bad guy" to use those tendencies against her.
I did enjoy listening to this and it kept my interest as things began to ramp up and we began the race to the finish. This book was narrated by Emma Lysy who was a "new to me" narrator, but she did a good job with the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this audio ARC. This book is out for publication on July 29, 2025.
My heart breaks for Levi and Zoe, their love was so new, so fragile, it really is difficult for it to stay strong when they are not only so far apart physically, but also unable to communicate clearly and openly. Zoe has no idea how she is being monitored or why, but she does know that whoever it is has too much information and they know far too much about those that are important to her, the only option she sees to keep Levi safe is to cut him off. You can feel her fear, her terror and see the strain of facing this alone drain her spirit with each hour that passes. But she is not alone, no matter how she has ghosted him Levi is determined to get answers and those answers make him realise....he jumped to conclusions. Zoe is in trouble, and his hurt and defensive attitude are only compounding the problem. I love that Levi is man enough to own his own attitude problem and shelve it as he helps Zoe, he admits he handled being deployed and away from her badly and is all in on finding and neutralising the threat so they can reclaim their love and the future they both dream of. Sky is obviously the hero of the book, he is a warrior through and through and defends his people without hesitation.
What I really liked about this story was Levi himself. He’s portrayed as grounded, loyal, and emotionally honest—a refreshing lead in a genre that often leans too heavily on macho tropes. His emotional vulnerability makes his connection with Zoe feel genuine, even if Zoe’s own behavior was harder to understand at times.
Then there was the threats to Zoe. This Took up the 2nd half of the story and was a lot of mystery mixed with the Romance. Keeping me guessing who the culprit was until the end.
However, for a book titled Crime Scene K-9, I expected Sky, the canine partner, to play a more central role. Aside from a few early scenes, Sky unfortunately fades into the background, Until The 2nd half being more of a Romance. Additionally, while Lexi (Levi’s sister) is a likable character in her own right, her subplot took up more space than necessary and sometimes distracted from the core romance and suspense elements.
The Narrator Emma Lysy narrates this very well. She is very into the parts and easy to connect with Overall, this is a solid read / Listen with strong characters and emotional beats, but I was hoping for more focus on the K-9 aspect and a tighter plot. If you enjoy romance with a touch of mystery and don’t mind a few pacing detours, this one may be worth checking out.
Thank you to the Publisher Harlequin Audio For the Advanced Audio Copy as well as Julie Miller and NetGalley.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I love this series and I was happy with most of the book but there were a few scenes that bothered me - mainly the proposal. Both characters were well developed, emotionally vulnerable and definitely more centered when they were open and communicating. Loved Sky and as always - they should have listened to the dog.

Levi Callahan, a Marine Master Sargeant, met shy Zoe Stockman when on leave. The moment he saw her having a panic attack, he helped her deal with it. They had a memorable night and stayed in touch after he returned to his deployment location. He was sure she was “the one” but suddenly, Zoe ghosts him. After a mission gone wrong and getting injured, Levi returned home with the hopes of finding out what had happened. Levi is totally unaware that someone is threatening Zoe and all she wants is to protect those she loves and care for, even if it means she needs to let them go. The moment Levi not only the truth but also the secret Zoe has kept, he is determined to keep her safe with the help of his K-9 Sky. But the mystery continues, who is threatening her? Are they connected to the deaths occurring to young women? Is this a copycat killer? Will they survive the danger and if so, will these two truly find their HEA? This action packed romance thriller will keep the listeners on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. The main characters are well developed and the K-9 Sky, a truly remarkable dog. Kudos to the narrator Emma Lysy for bringing the story to life. I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley and Harlequin Audio. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Although i did enjoy the book, i did feel that it could’ve been a bit longer, there’s definitely more to this story than where it ended. It was a solid romance, Levi was your typical military man, with his loyal, and intelligent K-9 Sky. Zoe is an anxiety ridden, criminalist with a bad dating history.
I do think that when Sky was alerting to Poppy, Levi should’ve been able to pick up and trust that, considering what happened the last time he didn’t listen to him, or at least doubted and paused a moment longer with putting Sky away. Gus stepped up and watched out like he was told to do, points to him. The book ending just didn’t call to me, it wasn’t a bad ending.
I wish there was more considering the main plot of the story takes place over the course of three days. Considering how long the stalking goes on for, three days is a very short amount of time. I’d like to know how Emily’s case wraps up, poppy being convicted for her crimes, Levi going back to see Ethan and getting to tell him his plan failed. Levi and Zoe getting to blossom into their relationship fully without the fear over their heads, even the baby being born? I feel there was a lot more that could’ve been written for these two.

This is book five of the Protectors at K-9 Ranch series. This is a second chance romance with a mystery added in.
This story is about a guy named Levi Callahan. He is a Master Sergeant. He met a woman named Zoe Stockman. He thought she was the perfect lover….until she ghosted him. He figured his only faithful companion was his loyal K-9 partner Sky. Levi tried to forget Zoe. Even after his medical discharge brought him back home. Home was a place s from which Zoe had practically disappeared. She cut off all contact with everyone not just him.
Levi knew he would find answers only after he and Sky tracked Zoe down. The Marine just hadn’t imagined the terror Zoe had endured while he was away or the surprise she’d been attempting to keep safe. You find out that Zoe had a stalker and a baby and Levi is the father. Zoe never communicated with Levi about what she was going through or about the baby. I felt bad for Levi that she wasn’t talking to him the way she should have. I wish that Zoe had been upfront with Levi about what she was going and about the baby. I did enjoy the story overall.
Marine Msgt Levi Callahan thought he had met his soul partner but he still had a bit of time left on his enlistment before retirement. But when Zoe went from happy to hear from him to total ghosting him while he was deployed to the middle east. Levi has no clue what has happened but when he gets home with his partner K9 Sky, he vows to find out. But what Levi and Sky find is not anything that they ever thought and she has an even better secret. This is a really good audiobook, narrated by Emma Lysy. Emma has brought these characters to life through her voice. The author has a wonderful knowledge of military life, as well as K9 working dogs. The characters are wonderful and the plot flows well. I enjoyed this audiobook greatly and hope to be able to review even more.
I enjoyed the suspense in this story. The connection between Levi and Zoe felt real. I loved how he was determined to find out why she stopped reaching out to him. I liked how she had strong protective instincts. The suspense built well and had a few good suspects. The story unraveled the mystery slowly and placed some good hints. I have liked the author's previous books and this one was an enjoyable escape. I listened to the audio and the narrator was great. While this is part of a series, the story stands alone and is easily enjoyable without having read the others in the series. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Very cute romantic mystery with military man and his K-9. The narrator, Emma Lysy, did a very good job navigating the different voices and emotions of the characters. The pace of this book is fast with lots of twists and turns! I had lots of ideas as to the bad guy, but it didn't solve it until close to the end. The characters are lovable, for the most part.
TW: panic attacks, kidnapping, stalking, on page sexual content (not graphic).
I would like to read more of the Protectors of K-9 Ranch series! Thank you to Harlequinn Audio and NetGalley for making this audiobook available!
Master Sargeant Levi Callahan with his K-9 at his side thought Zoe Stockman was the one until she disappeared from his life. He tried to forget her but after being injured, he returns home and discovers Zoe is pregnant with his child. He vows to take care of her and the baby but soon discovers, the only reason she ghosted him is that someone is stalking Zoe and threatening anyone she cares about. The voice is disguised and the neighbor has a crush on her but doesn't seem to have the mental capacity to stalk. But who could it be?
Crime Scene K-9 by Julie Miller, narrated by Emma Lysy. Lysy food a great job on narration, made the book enjoyable. This is the 5th book in the series. Can be read as a stand-alone. Someone is stalking Zoe. With the help of Master Sergeant Levi Callahan and his K-9 this romantic suspense mystery will be your next beach read. Thank you to #NetGalley and #Harlequin Audio. This is my honest review. Releases July 29, 2025
There are times when a secondary character in a book nags the author to tell his or her own story. Such is the case with Zoe Stockman, the heroine in Julie Miller’s latest book, Crime Scene K-9. Zoe is a criminalist at the Kansas City Crime Lab and made an appearance in an earlier Julie Miller book, K-9 Patrol.
Crime Scene K-9 is the fifth book in Julie Miller’s Protectors at K-9 Ranch miniseries. Each of these books features a hunky hero and his devoted K-9. What’s not to love about that combo! In this book, Levi Callahan and his K-9 partner, Sky, team up with Zoe to discover who her stalker is so they can bring this predator to justice and get on with their happily ever after.
Part of what I love about category romance books is the sense of family connection that these books evoke. One looks forward to the next book in the series to catch up with old and new friends and cheer them on through thick and thin.
As always, Julie Miller writes a riveting mystery with lots of twists and turns and a great romance thrown into the mix. The climax of the book was a complete surprise to me, and as in all good mysteries, the perp got his comeuppance and the H/h got their HEA! Another great read in the Protectors at K-9 Ranch miniseries.
