I started this book late at night, stayed up until the early morning, and then picked it up again as soon as I woke up! It’s definitely a page-turner! If you enjoy second-chance romances, K9 rescues, and romantic suspense, this book is a must-read.
Eden is a park ranger who witnesses a crime that puts her life at risk. Zach is a sheriff’s deputy and Eden’s soon-to-be ex-husband. Though they’re separated, the love between them is still strong. They’ve decided to part ways due to their differing opinions, but all of that is thrown into question when Eden’s life is in danger. Zach must step in to protect her, but who is after her, and why?
The suspense, the mystery, and the chemistry between Eden and Zach are what really make this story so compelling. Normally, second-chance romances aren't at the top of my list, but this one is different and totally won me over. Often, these stories assume the romance is already established and dont allow you to experience it... but with Eden and Zach, you really feel the tension and chemistry as you watch them try to navigate their feelings for each other amidst all the secrets. These secrets are part of what tore their marriage apart, but they also add layers to the story, making it even more gripping.
I was rooting for Eden to stay alive, for Zach to protect her, and for them to overcome the barriers that are keeping them apart. And hoping they can rediscover the love they once shared. This story is truly wonderful, and Terri has written another captivating book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I’d give it 4.5 stars, but I’m rounding it up to 5!
I received a complimentary copy, but as always, this is my honest opinion.
What a great second chance marriage restored story this was. Eden, a park ranger, witnesses a murder, and the murderer is determined to silence her. Eden's estranged husband Zach, a sheriff's deputy, and his K9 partner Amber must protect Eden. Their relationship is emotional due to Zach's unwillingness to be a parent because of something that happened in his past, and he is afraid to tell Eden the truth. The mystery was fast-paced with danger, suspense, and tension, and I devoured the story in a few hours. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Standing Watch is another fantastic book by Terri Reed. K-9 officer Zach Kelsey is estranged from his wife. Even though he loves her, he just can't agree to children. And Eden very much wants them. When Eden witnesses the murder of her friend and then the killer sets his sights on her, Zach knows he's the one to protect her. Even though Eden isn't happy with this, she knows she is safe with him. But then they find out she's pregnant. Zach is so sure he'll fail as a father but puts the fear aside as the killer escalates his attacks on Eden. All he knows he must protect them both. while catching a crazed killer.
What a great story this was! I really like a second chance/marriage relationship restored romance and Standing Watch was a excellent example of these. Eden and Zach’s relationship felt really natural as well as the issues that were threatening to end their marriage. The mystery elements for this story itself as well as the continuing mystery that is being told throughout the series were both well paced and exciting and I read the entire story in one afternoon. I definitely recommend this story!
I received a copy of this book from the author and was not required to post positive review. All thoughts are my own.
This story nabbed me from the very beginning, and I became so engrossed in it that I did not put it down until I turned the last page! The fast-paced plot boasts non-stop action and riveting suspense. I love the true-to-life Mount Rushmore setting expertly captured by the author. The well-crafted cast of characters, headed by estranged couple Eden and Zach Kelcey, is memorable and compelling. K-9 Amber stole the show with her wonderfully exciting scenes! The romantic tension and chemistry between Eden and Zach kept me hoping for a reconciliation. A secondary storyline involving the Dakota Gun Task Force's weapons trafficking case adds depth and interest to the story. I totally enjoyed this notch romantic suspense story and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to post a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I couldn't stop reading this book. From the action to the rebuilding of love between Chad and Eden becoming parents there wasn't a dull moment!
Will Chad and Eden separated and facing potential divorce reconcile after Eden is attacked and they learn at the hospital she is attacked or will Eden's hurt and Chad's fear of becoming a father prevent their reconciliation? What happened to cause Chad's extreme fear of becoming a father? What does he blame himself for?
When Eden is continuously threatened and attacked will they figure out who is behind the attacks and why before it's too late?
This book is packed with nonstop action built around faith and learning to trust God with hurt, pride and fear. If you love good clean suspense built on non-stop action and faith, this is the book for you!! Terri Reed knows how to capture and hold a reader's attention from start to finish while leaving you glad you read the story, but sad it's ended because it's so interesting! You definitely won't be disappointed with this book or any of Terri Reed's books! I absolutely loved this book!
A really suspenseful Dakota K-9 book. Sheriff Zach Kelsey is on the hunt for arms traffickers in the Dakotas. He is going back to his home area to do some interviews. While there he will confront his estranged wife. Unbeknownst to Zach he will not only confront her but will need to protect her. Eden is a park ranger and witnesses a killing while doing her morning check of the park. Now she is on the sights of a killer and Zach needs to protect her as several attempts on her life occur. He and his K-9 Amber also do search and rescue while in the area.
I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read by Terri Reed. “Standing Watch” is no exception.
“Standing Watch” begins at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Eden Kelcey is an Interpretive Park Ranger who enjoys her job, but sadly she is not happy due to being separated from her husband Keystone Sheriff’s Deputy K-9 officer Zach Kelcey. Zach’s K-9 partner is Amber, a female black Labrador retriever.
There seems to be an impossible chasm dividing Eden and Zach’s relationship.
Who committed the murder Eden witnessed at the beginning of the book? I found myself flip-flopping between suspects.
Emotions and danger kept Eden and Zach from getting past their problems. The danger never stops. Just when you think it’s over. Here the danger comes again.
Reading “Standing Watch” has given me the desire to read the rest of the books in the Dakota K-9 Unit series.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book with no obligation to post a positive review.
Whew! A lot of action and intrigue in this book. This one really keeps them guessing to try to figure out who killed a park ranger and who is trying to kill another!
I received this book from the publisher to read but was under No obligation to give a review. This is my opinion of the book.
Standing Watch by Terri Reed this was another great inspirational suspense that will keep you reading and turning the pages, As officer Zach Kelsey and his K-9 partner are trying to keep his wife Eden safe and find out who murdered her coworker as she witnessed the murder! This is such a great book when you pick it up you don't want to put it down until the end to see who the bad guy is! I was given a compilatory copy and this is my own honest opinion!
This book was a page turner from the first page until the last! I literally couldn’t put it down! What I loved most of the book, aside from the thrilling suspense and intrigue, was that it was a story of second chances between a married estranged couple. I like reading about couples who struggle in marriage and how God works through them and helps them grow throughout their journey into a deeper faith and a trust in Him and His ways, which is constantly the bigger obstacle in relationships: the lack of trust, in God, in themselves, in the other. Zach Kelcey is Keystone’s Sheriff Deputy K-9 Officer who is part of Dakota Gun Task Force and is working along his team to bring a trafficking ring down. He and his colleague are at Mount Rushmore National State Park looking for buried weapons the ring is suspected to be hiding in major landmarks. He also wants to be near his recently estranged wife Eden who works as a park ranger at the same National Park. When he hears a scream that sounds like Eden’s, he can’t believe his eyes when he discovers her unconscious after being attacked by the murderer of a young park ranger named Lyndsay. Eden has witnessed the murder firsthand, and now she is the target of a madman. Zach vows to protect her at all costs, but their relationship is more than strained after getting separated because Zach is unwilling to start a family. What is even more shocking to both is discovering at the hospital that Eden is already carrying his child. Now he has two precious lives to protect, but is he capable of being a good father to his unborn child? Especially after failing miserably to protect his little sister when he was young, which is something he cannot ever forgive himself. Will Eden and his child be better off without him? Right now, what’s important is protecting them and making sure the assassin is put behind bars once and for all. As I said, the book is a constant page turner. The plot is very fast paced, full of action and unexpected twists that keep you guessing until the end. The death threatening danger never stops which kept me on the edge of my seat. The best part is the inspiring message behind the story and the way the relationship mends throughout the terrifying experience, not without a lot of help from above, that’s for sure. The guilt and secret that Zach carries is what has broken their relationship, which makes it evident how important communication and trust are in a relationship. Their love for each other hasn’t wanned, and we see it, among other things, in the chemistry and pulling that they still experience when they are together. Being in close proximity, as Zach is ever reluctant to leave her side, only magnifies their bond and connection, but there are important issues to be resolved before they can face the future together. Trust in God and accepting forgiveness, from God and oneself, is one of the main themes, and I loved how the author weaved them through the story in a natural way. Trust in a relationship is So important, and the idea shines throughout the book too. The romance between Zach and Eden is full of angst and tension, yet still solid and capable to overcome the greatest obstacle of all: the fear of failure, of never measuring up. They are both flawed, relatable, and easy to root for. I particularly loved Zach’s protectiveness of Eden. Both their courage is admirable too, yet realistic. The ending was so good! I highly recommend this gripping romantic suspense story of healing, redemption and second chances! I received a complimentary copy from the author but was not required to write a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Terri Reed’s quickly becoming a favorite for romantic suspense & Standing Watch definitely kept me on my toes! This fast-paced story was non-stop action with a killer stalking the woman who saw him murder a fellow female park ranger at Mount Rushmore. It’s also a heartfelt second chance/marriage restoration love story with a touch of faith. And don’t forget Amber, the trusty K-9 task force companion who helps sniff out missing children & ruthless criminals. She’s as sweet as she is fearless.
When Zach Kelsey, a K-9 task force officer, discovers his estranged wife Eden was attacked at Mount Rushmore, he & Amber are quick to the scene. As the only witness to her co-worker’s murder, she’s in immediate danger. Despite their differences, they both still love each other & Zach’s determined to protect her. Complicating matters is the fact that Eden discovers she’s 9 weeks pregnant. Now Zach has two lives to protect despite his doubts about being a father as a killer continually ramps up his attacks on Eden.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Not only was it one twist after another, but it was so rewarding seeing these estranged spouses find their way back to each other. There’s a lot of heart & soul searching as Eden discovers things about her husband she never knew. Zach must also come to terms with his past if he’s ever to move forward. I loved the touch of faith subtlety woven throughout. I also enjoyed Zach’s faithful dog, Amber. She’s a darling character in her own right.
The killer was definitely persistent. I never knew when he would pop up & how he would try to go after Eden. So many heart-pounding moments! The final confrontations had me on the edge of my seat.
Highly recommend! Looking forward to this author’s next book. I received an advanced copy from the author with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily provided.
This is the third book in a 9-book series by multiple authors. The first book came out in April, and the last one will come out in December.
I read and enjoyed the first two books in this series, and have been looking forward to reading this one. Each book has its own plot, but there is a main plot running through the whole series that involves gun smuggling.
Standing Watch was an awesome read. I do enjoy romance, and second chance romances are one of my favorites. In this book, the couple is still very much in love, but are separated because Zach doesn't want kid....due to childhood trauma.
I really liked Zach and Eden......and Tyler and Amber - their cat and dog. Zach is determined to protect his wife and unborn child, while wrestling with the idea of being a father. Eden still loves Zach, though she doesn't understand why he doesn't want kids.
There is a lot of suspense in the book as the bad guy tries to get to Eden, as she and Zach try to stay safe. You have a pretty good idea who the bad guy is, but he is relentless and there are some nail biting moments as it looks like he will succeed.
I loved the ending of the book. The author resolved the suspense and romance parts of the story very well, and left me wanting to read the next book, due out in July.
Special thanks to the author for an advance copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Standing Watch. This is book three in the continuity series, Dakota K-9 Unit. I'm really enjoying this series, it's written by some of my favorite authors. I'm a big fan of Terri's work. This story is awesome. I know you are going to love it.
Park Ranger Eden Kelsey was preparing the park for opening. She was thinking about the end of her marriage. She had wanted children but Zach didn't want a child, ever. It broke her heart. She heard two people arguing. She witnessed the murder of a fellow ranger. The murderer chased after her. He grabbed her around her waist and dropped to the ground. She hit her head and blacked out.
Dakota K-9 Task Force Officer Zach Kelsey heard a woman scream. He was in this park searching for buried weapons because he was from this area and Eden worked here. The scream sounded like her. He handed Amber, his K-9 partner, her scarf and she took off. They found Eden unconscious. Zach rode to the hospital with her. Only to find out to his shock that she was pregnant. Could he keep her and the baby safe?
A terrifying journey as the killer comes after them. God has a plan for these two, a good plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A plan for peace and not for evil. give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.
What a fantastic story! I had recently finished the second book in this Dakota K-9 Unit series, which included Zach, and was hoping one of the next books in the series would focus on him. It was such a pleasant surprise that the very next book, Standing Watch by author Terri Reed, indeed does! Zach Kelsey, K-9 officer, is part of the task force. He's estranged from his park ranger wife, Eden. The love is still there. They are both miserable without each other. But they can't seem to resolve their problems. Eden is the only witness to the murder of a fellow park ranger. She narrowly escapes herself, and is shocked at the hospital to find out she's pregnant. Now, despite the separation, Zach is determined that he and his K-9 partner, Amber, will protect Eden and the baby at all costs. A killer is just as determined to take care of Eden...for good. As they fight to protect their lives, can they fight to save their marriage, too? You need to find out! I really enjoyed the chemistry between Zach and Eden. Not just the romance, but their intelligence and determination. This book has twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages as quickly as you can! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
Phew! Heart-in-throat opening scene sets the tone for this tense, action packed romantic suspense! The way Reed describes Eden’s desperation and panic kept me frantically listening. (Yes, this was another audible read for me – wonderful performance by a favourite narrator, Tanya Eby.) And the emotional turmoil of the reunion romance added a whole other kind of tension. I just had to keep ‘reading’ in order to get to the happily-ever-after reward.
So, Zach and Eden have a history — and it’s pretty fresh. They’re married but have been separated for a couple of months. Feelings are tender. Miscommunication rampant. Secrets need to be shared. All while trying to stay one step ahead of a very determined killer.
This is the third book in the Dakota K-9 Unit multi-authored continuity series but makes an excellent standalone read as well. There is one over-arcing suspense plot that carries through from the first book to the last while each story has its own suspense and romance with complete resolution.
A captivating page-turner (or compulsive listen.) Zach and Eden’s story is an incredible addition to the series and I’m excited to be back with the team next month for another installment!
Loved Zach and Eden's story!! Zach and Eden have been married for a while, though they've been separated for two months. Now, Eden has watched her co-worker be murdered, and they find out that Eden's pregnant. Zach's world is spinning, as the reason they separated was because Zach didn't want to be a father. Now that he knows he will be, he doesn't know that he wants desert his wife and child. Eden doesn't want Zach to stay with her out of duty and obligation, but out of love for her and their child. Eden doesn't know why Zach feels as he does, as she knows he'd be a great father after seeing him interact with other children. When trouble comes for Eden, Zach knows he'll do anything he can to protect her and their child. Zach has to learn that he can't give in to fear, and that God can and will help him to be the father his child needs. Zach also has to find the courage to tell Eden why he feels as he does, though he doesn't want her to think less of him. When he finally shares, he learns how Eden really does love him.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.
I started reading Standing Watch by Terri Reed before going to bed which turned out to be a mistake. I found myself reading this compelling tale until the wee hours. I thought Standing Watch was well-written with developed characters. I could feel the chemistry and tension between Eden and Zach. I admit, though, there were times when I wanted to bonk Zach over the head, because he was being so thickheaded over a certain issue. I loved the dogs. They are sweet and smart. I am continually impressed by the capabilities of dogs. Standing Watch has mystery, suspense, and action (which kept things lively). Someone was determined to kill Eden and Zach was dedicated to keeping her safe. The story had layers (it reminded me of an onion where you peel back layer after layer which each one better than the last) which made it more interesting. Standing Watch is the third book in the Dakota K-9 Unit series. It can be read independently but reading them sequentially may provide a more cohesive experience. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. I was surprised to learn that it is not a national park, but a national memorial managed by the national park service. Standing Watch is an absorbing story with a murdered ranger, an unforeseen surprise, a shielding spouse, a tenacious slayer, and a second chance romance.
Zach Kelsey is with his K-9, Amber when he hears screaming at the national park where his wife is a park ranger. He has no idea that it is his estranged wife, Eden. Eden has just witnessed a horrifying crime, and someone is after her.
Even though they are estranged, Zach is determined to keep Eden safe. There is so much going on in this book. It was much more than a mystery to be solved. The broken relationship between Zach and Eden was one of the most important parts of this story. They are separated, but they are also heartbroken. Zach knows why, but Eden is in the dark as to his reasons for their breakup. It was very obvious that they still loved one another, but past baggage is going to have to be dealt with in order to move forward. Communication is the key to the restoration of this relationship.
Running from a killer who knows no boundaries will require them to be on their toes at all time. They have to trust one another. This was a high stakes mystery with plenty of suspense and a whole lot of action. K-9 Amber often steals the show with her masterful skills.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Although I hadn't read the other books in this series before I read this one, I was able to piece together the main story easily enough to know what the series is about. I read all books by this author, so I picked up this book, of course! It was another fantastic suspense, and I loved the premise - second chance, marriage rekindled. Eden and Zach have recently separated because Zach doesn't want a family and Eden wants one very much. They don't see a way around it. However, Eden witnesses a murder and Zach, being a K-9 officer, saves her from being attacked by the murderer. After that, they must stay together because the murderer won't let up. He follows Eden everywhere. There is a lot of action and great character development as Eden and Zach try to deal with the stress of their marriage falling apart but then a surprise comes - Eden is pregnant! Now what is going to happen? Will Zach change his mind? Will Eden live long enough to give birth? Who is the murderer? A great story and I loved the K-9's involved!!!
Standing Watch by Terri Reed in book three of the Dakota K-9 Unit series. I’m a fan of the K-9 series and Terri Reed is one of my favorite authors so it’s a win win for me. You won’t be disappointed in Terri’s book or the series.
Park Ranger Eden Kelcey walks into a murder of a fellow park ranger. The killer thinks she got a good look at him so he’s determined to eliminate any chance of her identifying him.
Keystone Sheriff’s Deputy K-9 Officer Zach Kelcey, Eden’s estranged husband, along with Plains City Police Detective West Cole are hunting a trafficking ring that is believed to be using major landmarks to hide caches of illegal arms. They were at Mount Rushmore and they rescue Eden.
Can Zach protect Eden until the killer is caught. Both have lingering feelings along with hurt and misunderstanding. Will they be able to walk away?
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a review. The opinion is my own.
A fast-paced suspense set in the stunning Black Hills of South Dakota.
Zach Kelsey and his K-9 Amber answer a call to an assault to find that the victim is his estranged wife, Eden, who has also witnessed a deadly attack. Can he keep her safe?
Suspenseful and action-packed with a lot going on, as a South Dakota resident it was fun seeing a lot of familiar places, but some of the names were also changed as well. Zach and Eden are forced to face the things that pushed them apart, and I liked that all the things going on gave them a chance to talk things out. They make a good team and are both great at thinking on their feet!
There is a lot going on, as the killer continue to stalk them, and I kept wondering what would happen next. Great tension throughout, suspense and relationship-wise. I liked the strong themes of faith and forgiveness. Definitely well worth reading!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is an inspirational romantic suspense book. The main characters are Zach and Eden. Zach is a K-9 task force officer and Eden is a park ranger. Zach and Eden are married but are going through a tough time and are living apart. Eden witnesses someone being killed. The killer knows Eden saw him so now he is out for her. Zach will do anything to keep his wife safe. Zach doesn’t think he wants kids because of his past but while protecting Eden he finds out she is pregnant with their child. Can Zach and his K-9 Amber keep them safe? Will he get over his fear of being a father? Will Eden be more understanding to Zach and stop pushing him away? Can they save their marriage? I loved Zach and understood why he was scared to be a father. It took me a long time to like Eden as I didn’t think she was very understanding. This book did have a lot of suspense though which I liked. Overall, this was a good book.
What a page-turner! Eden Kelsey and her husband both become targets after Eden witnesses a co-worker's murder, but their physical safety is just half of the battle. Eden's pregnancy and Zach's uncertainty about being a father may be a conflict they can't overcome!
Author Terri Reed delivers a compelling story filled with nail-biting suspense, page-turning adventure, and heartwarming romance! It is a realistic portrayal of two people thrust into danger, struggling to stay alive, and fighting to save their marriage. Reed's depiction of their fears, doubts, and uncertainties is spot on, and she's also created a crafty villain! Having a baby should be filled with happiness and excitement, but Eden's joy is overshadowed by Zach's reluctance to confide in her. Why is Zach so opposed to being a father?
I recommend Standing Watch to fans of romantic Christian suspense.
I received a copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review.
In the latest Dakota K-9 Unit book we find Zach Kelsey, a K-9 officer living in a small apartment while he and his wife Eden try to work through a rough spot in their marriage. Eden is working as a Park Ranger at Mt. Rushmore. He has just come back from working with his team when Eden discovers a man trying to strangle one of her coworkers in the park. When she attacks he chases her and tries to hurt her. Zach chases after and lovingly carries his wife to the ambulance. Trying to arrest the man who attacked both women was not good. He managed to break away. Standing Watch will be published by Love Inspired Suspense on May 27, 2025. It is the third in the Dakota K-9 Unit Series. Such an excellent series with heavy duty suspense. It's a great read - I encourage all K-9 lovers to grab a copy.
