There is so much to this book, it is hard to sum up in a single review.
From the very first page, I was drawn into the grief-stricken world of Jane Addison, a loving mother, a devoted wife and a lonely widow searching for answers.
With the loss of her husband and home, Jane is forced to rely on her religious father for support and protection. Davis Cooper is a man of religion, and knows nothing of the true love of God.
Jane isn't perfect and her father never lets her forget it. Davis often reminds her of the sin that lead her into a marriage he didn't approve of with a man he hated. It is clear to see why Jane feels alone and unloved after the death of her husband. So when Cole Mays, a friend of her husband’s shows up on her doorstep, Jane’s heart reaches out for comfort.
Cole is a married man, but is drawn in by Jane's affection for him. Events in the story make Cole see his relationship with Jane through the eyes of God.
The descriptions of Kentucky and the Confederate threat add depth to the setting, while the moral dilemma of its characters fill the story with emotional conflict. This gifted author tells a unique story of bitter heartache, loss and forbidden love.
You will not be disappointed by the Sun’s Parting Ray. It is excellent!

Against a background of Civil (uncivil) war, a young mother loses her husband and finds herself back in the family home she fled so eagerly for marriage. It’s an unforgiving home, ruled by a father well-versed in faith and law. But it’s a kind enough place for the slaves who Jane naively views as part of her family, until fate proves her naivety ill-founded. It’s 1862, and the world is changing.
Faithful to her own sense of justice and kindness, Jane is dismayed to find herself falling for a married man. But he’s unhappily married, and she agonizes over that narrow line between love and law.
Sun’s Parting Ray is a novel of faith, hope and forgiveness, that doesn’t skirt tough issues, whether personal or national. Characters grow and change convincingly; and there’s truly a wealth of characters living within these pages. The story has a pleasing feel of reality, as does the faith, and I just wished it had come to a more definite conclusion. Good people mess up. Cruel people show generosity. And war, perhaps, brings out the worst in all.
