Me before reading: "I hope this is as redonculously bad as it sounds."

It isn't, once you've accepted the strange premise that this half-vampire, half-werewolf displays neither lycanthropic nor exsanguinary tendencies, but instead changes from a man to a woman. Everyone can see when this happens, because his hair becomes long. Flowing hair = female.

His parents consult their doctor friend for an hour or so. Without even examining Marlo the doctor concludes that nothing can be done. Immediately the two couples decide that the solution is to marry Marlo off to the doctor's vampire son, David. This was published in 1998 and as far as I can tell is set then, so this feels rather old-fashioned.

Some events happen. Marlo gets kidnapped, an ex (from America, and if you've read this author's Fake you already know how her Americans are) shows up, etc. Marlo's mother tells them a werewolf legend. These parts are fine, nothing special.

What I found most interesting about this manga was how many different discussion points it contains for topics relating to gender and gender roles, and also how difficult it is to have an objective discussion of these subjects when so many biases are encoded in language. What does it mean to be feminine? Would a biological switch change the individual's personality? If a man marries a person who is only a part-time women, does that make him bisexual? There seems to be some assumption that the two will be wed when Marlo is in girl-form and David is much more handsy with her then -- he's a pretty sex-harasser guy -- but it seems clear that they're attracted to one another as men as well. Marlo's objection seems to be not to marrying a man but due to his reasonable belief that David will be unfaithful.

Also interesting is the explanation about Marlo's werewolf ancestor from an all-male clan. Some turn into wolves at the full moon, others into women, and this is the only time they can reproduce. They form pairs, but as far as we see in the brief story the ones who become women are not considered less manly the rest of the time.

I'll see if I can track down the second half.

While hunting down the manga series "Fake" I stumbled across this manga written by the same author. Fake, as silly as it is sometimes, is far superior so I'd recommend searching that out instead.

This one has a paranormal bent featuring werewolves, vampires and pretty young men. Sounded perfectly lovely to me. But then I read it.

Marlo is the child of a werewolf and a vampire and recently started changing during the full moon. But instead of turning into a wolf, as expected, he changes gender. His parents enlist the help of an old family friend whose rakish son David had an innocent but more than friends type of relationship with Marlo when they were young. It's been ten years since they've been together and Marlo would really prefer to keep his "problem" a secret from David.

It doesn't take long for David to see first hand what is going on with Marlo and he becomes painfully attracted to the female form of Marlo. But he doesn't' seem to mind the male form all that much either. The parents of these two young men decide that a cure is unlikely and decide they should marry. It's all going along too swimmingly so some conflict is thrown in to stretch it out a bit in the way of an old girlfriend and two pesky friends. I would have much rather have seen this space used to explore the Marlo and David dynamic and Marlo's feelings about changing gender but it is what it is.

After the silly ex and friend issues are resolved the book then steps back in time where we see a past version of Marlo and David living a happy ever after. What. The. Hell? I guess this little rendezvous was there to show us dummies that the two have always belonged together all soul-mate-like? Groan. I don't know. What I do know is that it was all a little strange and not very cohesive and the relationship wasn't interesting because it wasn't explored much at all. Though David loves Marlo regardless of which form he's in (yeah David), Marlo won't let David near him unless he's a girl which is only one day a month. Again, I beg to know, what the hell is the point? Gender issue isn't explored, feelings aren't explored, nothing is fleshed out. And don't even get me started on the werewolf/vampire angle because it's pointless too.

This was one of those that a friend handed me and didn't tell me a word about it. So I read it.

It's the story of a dude that, rather than become a werewolf, turns into a chick on the full moon. He is then forcibly engaged by his parents to a vampire, who is also a guy. The story is their tale of getting along, falling in love, and dealing with people who kidnap fem-wolf.

I'd say it was a case of "too squeamish for guyxguy," except that they're pretty blatant about the dudexdude relationship. This falls more under the "But I want them to have a baby in the future!"

All I can say is that the art was pretty, but there were some seriously weird stuff going on.

Marlo is half-werewolf and half-vampire but his fangs still haven’t grown in yet. But that’s the least of his worries. When he becomes a woman by the light of the moon, matters between Marlo and his best friend David get…complicated. But David loves Marlo no matter what form s/he wears. Marlo isn’t so certain of his own feelings and turning into a woman doesn’t lessen his confusion. So what to do now?

The idea of gender-switching is one that plays to the fancies of many manga readers. Fluidity of form is the appeal of such notions as vampirism and lycanthropy. The fans of cosplay are delighted with the idea of dressing as opposite genders and there is much in this story to appeal to them. Ms. Matoh has given this tale her unique spin, with lovely men (and women) struggling to forge their way in the world. The fact that Marlo and David’s parents are vampires and werewolves does not mitigate the difficulties they all experience (and in some cases, worsens them). Romantic mix-ups, kidnapping, wedding dress fittings (!), well-meaning friends and the bride’s own inner turmoil make this one unusual and highly charming manga.

4.5/5.0 - The "Is Sanami Matoh asexual reread/Does She Write Asexual Characters" (spurred by how utterly asexual Ryo's character was in Fake)

For this reread, nah, not really. Marlo is queer and we have the opportunity of a character that gets to play in both sexes (A genderfluid dream!), but that's about it ya'll. Marlo has reservations about sex, but not because Marlo doesn't experience sexual attraction - Marlo does, but is conflicted about it. What interesting is that David is bisexual, a bit like Dee. This probably had a harder time hitting the audience, as BL readers are nearly rabid about perserving the boy-only-on-boy theme.

On the reread, I also noticed how utterly psychotic David is. Man oh man, I can't believe that's a trope that seems to work. Oh well. And there was an almost-kinda-incestuous storyline. But like every theme in this series, it seems it just falls a bit short. Until the Full Moon is a short run, a bit silly, and more beach read than anything else. There's a couple treats in this, it's just a shame it wasn't given more. Assuming volume doesn't deliver.

It was fine. Uma would like this. I kinda don’t care about the characters but I’ll read the next one if it’s at the library I guess.

I bought this manga 10+ years ago in a random middle of nowhere dollar store. It’s weird and queer and the art style is so 90s. I really enjoyed it and I’m definitely planning on reading the sequel.

Wow, do I have issues with this series. So the main protagonists are two men, one is a vampire and one is probably a werewolf (he should be half and half, but screw genetics is the motto of this book). The two fellow are childhood friends and they fall in love, but they can never be together because tragically they are both men (?). Lucky for the two, werewolf boy is a throw back to a time when his werewolf tribe turned either into wolves, or into women. Guess which one wolf boy gets? Yup, three days a month he gets to be a girl, which is awesome because now the two can get married(??) YAY! goes the vampire, yay goes the werewolf. And they lived happily after after.

*record screech*

So lets think about this a little okay?

The two men are romantically in love with each other, but they are squicked out about having sex together because that wouldn't be right. However a whole town of people that have sex with animals is okay, because werewolves. It's not male wolves and female wolves, it's male wolves and and female women. So outside of issues of consent, that's some hard core bestiality which is still somehow shown in a better light then male on male sex. This book has some real issues.

These books are almost unbearably cute. While some of the gender stereotypes felt a little forced (Marlo starts arranging flowers the night before the full moon), it's generally so far over the top (Marlo's female frame is smaller, so he always winds up clutching his clothes to his chest as though about to swoon) that watching Marlo whiplash between his gender expressions is most of the charm of these stories. (The rest is David's cheerful bisexuality in the face of Marlo's freakouts, I feel!) The collected stories -- there's very little difference in tone or theme between the two volumes, so I'm basically reviewing them together -- are all complete cliches, often other couples trying to break up Marlo and David because of some misunderstandings of their own, although I did like the one with Marlo's American fiancee (she was so forthright about it! and I find it very easy to believe that she liked Marlo's girl form more than she would admit). It's a pity that the storyline is complete and there won't be any more of these!

I love Fake by this same author, so I was very happy when my friend gave me this for my birthday a few years ago. I just re-read it a week ago, and was so happy I did. It is not as good as fake, but it's still very cute. This book has more fantasy to it, and is very entertaining. In this story, somehow vampire + werewolf = a guy turning into a girl on the full moon. So even though Marlo is a guy the majority of the time, his parents decide to marry him off to their old family friend's son, David. This story has a lot less beating around the bush than Fake, but it had to be more direct because it is only 2 books as opposed to 7. I recomend getting both books at once because you'll easily be able to finish both in one day.

Fake was way better. The characterization and plot here are both really confusing, I had trouble following what was going on and when I did understand it, it was problematic and not addressed. Not rapey though, so there's that.

Vampire + gender-bending werewolf = hilarity.
3.5* stars.

Marlo and David were best friends as children, but 10 years have passed since they've seen each other. And now thanks to the absurdity of their parents, they're not only friends, but fiancés. Obviously, the only logical thing to do (by manga standards) is to have Marlo, who transforms into a woman under the full moon due to his half-werewolf lineage, marry David, who has been in love with Marlo since they were young.

This volume was hilarious. Some of the things were a bit cringy, (including the nineties hairstyles, yeesh,) but the overall atmosphere of the story was something light and silly, a nice break from other serious romance series.

The art was also nice, sleek lines and, wise crack aside, I must say there is lot of attention to detail on the hair (and fur) making it stand out beautifully.

This is a nice fun, silly series that I do look forward to finding the next and final volume of.

This manga was not my favorite, the reason why I picked this book is that it looks interesting even though I didn't read the description of the book. I thought the book was going to be about two guys who try to solve a mystery but no it wasn't and that was my fault for not reading the description. The part that I didn't like was the story even though I didn't read the whole book I didn't I only got to 20 pages. the one thing that I did like was the art even though the story was not that pleasing to me the art was aesthetically pleasing it was drawn very well. and the final thing that I liked was the characters had very interesting personalities they weren't ass twisted as I wanted based on what I thought the genre was going to be, but they were typically funny and caring manga and anime characters.

i didn’t hate it lol!! tbh is it a bit outdated and cliche/ stereotypical? yes, can’t deny it. and the entire ‘turning into a woman’ thing couldve been dealt with better (esp regarding the matter of intimacy). BUT I didn’t mind the premise or plot as much as i thought i would hajsjsj i did appreciate how david liked marlo bc he’s marlo, and it didn’t matter if he’s a boy or a girl. he makes it pretty clear in many scenes. also i rlly like the art style and covers!! i hear fake is so much better tho so i wanna check that out soon (it’s been on my tbr for awhile so oof)

*sound of nails going across a chalkboard* oh dear this was not the best manga series I have ever started but it was truly one of the worst. It shows incest and gives trans gender representation a bad light to me. I liked that it was paranormal and humorous like chibi vampire but otherwise blergh couldn't stand it. Plus the last chapter felt disconnected and confusing. Because of these points, I have to give this a two of 5 stars

I picked this manga up because I like the FAKE series by the same author. The art is still just as pretty and lovely as FAKE, but it is pretty much the exact same series, only with vampires and werewolves instead of cops. The characters have the same personalities, the same foibles, overall, it has the same feel as FAKE, but isn't as interesting. This is only a two part series, so I am going to finish the other book because I already have it, but I am not keeping them around for any re-reads.

When I learned that the character turn into a woman on the full moon I got Ranma 1/2 / Inuyasha vibes. But honestly I didn't care much for the main couple. I found it somewhat bothered me that the main lead David is more attracted to his lover when he's in women form when Marlo truly is a man, and Marlo has a hard time accepting that it's okay to be loved by a man as a man instead of a woman.

My coworker loaned me her volumes because we were reminiscing on manga we read growing up and I have to say that this was definitely a read. The storyline is chaotic and the characters are all over the place but you can't help but appreciate it as it is.

Fantasy paranormal, vampire and werewolves, David and Marlo get engaged, then fall in love. Hitch is Marlo transforms into a female at the full moon. A bit silly in plot, but I still love Sanami Matoh's work. Fake is still the most exceptional in plot work and angst.

Until The Full Moon is a story about one of the oldest romances, the forbidden love that occurs between a vampire and a werewolf. Except in this case, the romance isn't forbidden. It's actually an arranged marriage set up by the protagonists' parents. Playboy Vincent is enthused by the prospect of marrying his childhood friend. Marlo, not so much. Marlo isn't a typical werewolf. He's part of a rare clan who instead of becoming a wolf, on the eve of the full moon, he turns into a woman. A woman that Vincent finds almost irresistible.

The first chapter announces their engagement and Vincent discovers why Marlo grew so distant from him as they grew older. The rest of the first volume chronicles the misadventures of Vincent and Marlo, all the things that could possibly complicate their upcoming nuptials. Mostly ex-girlfriends. Because all ex-girlfriends want to ruin your upcoming wedding. Ha. The final chapter is an interesting backstory told by Marlo's parents about the all-male werewolf clan that Marlo's mother descends from, which causes Marlo's current predicament. It's a rather abrupt departure from the rest of the manga, but it does help explain some of the mythology.

My good friend bought me both volumes of Until the Full Moon because she knew I was interested in Fake. While it doesn't have the same charm that drew me into Fake, Until the Full Moon is a rather charming, short read.

I loved this short series before it got translated into English! It has a great combo for me; one of my fav mangaka's lovely artwork, paranormal tone, shifters, a masculine uke, and an unusual twist.

Marlo is a character you sympathize with. He's dealing with being an unusual mix of vampire and werewolf and then he starts to have feelings for his male best friend, David. He pulls away from his best friend and years pass by until his parents drag him back to his best friend's home to get help for his unusual problem. (David's father is a great paranormal doctor). What's Marlo's new issue to deal with? Instead of turning into a wolf during the full moon, he becomes a she.

Now Marlo not only has to deal with the emotions and problems with being both truly male and female, but he's realized his love for David hasn't gone away and now David is interested in him! Add to that that the solution his parents have come up with to deal with Marlo's odd transformation is to engage him to David and poor Marlo has a ton of things to overcome.

This story isn't perfect but I always enjoy the short fun read it is.

A gothic comedy-romance in the vein of Ranma 1/2 and Nephilim. Marlo is the son of a werewolf and a vampire. Unfortunately he posesses traits of neither parent, under the full moon he transforms into a girl!

His parents take him to their friend an eminent doctor - he soon realises that there is nothing wrong with Marlo he is just a genetic throwback. He proposes a marriage between Marlo and his own son David a vampire playboy. David who has been in love with Marlo since they were kids is delighted with the situation, but Marlo needs some convincing. And of course various love rivals and mishaps cause spanners in the works.

Really fun, lite series although the characters do look like all Matoh's others (Male Marlo is a clone of Fake's Ryo). Doesn't have the darkness of her other work, but nevertheless a nice addition to the genre.

From the cover art and the blurb I read I imagined this was a gender-swapping comedy where David's attraction to Marlo's female form and the engagement were comedic problems. Instead, the characters on the cover are not the charcters in the actual story (though I believe they show up in the second volume), and the real art-style is what I refer to as the "soap-opera" style, and the romance takes center-stage over the comedy. That's fine if you're into that, but just know before hand that this is not comedy with a touch of romance, it's Boy's Love with a touch of comedy.

The vampires and werewolves seem to be a feature exclusively to explain why Marlo transforms in the first place, because the author doesn't do much with these elements, which I found disappointing.

It may not be a terrible example of it's genre, but I don't think it stands out either. .

3 1/2 stars. So, my first problem with this book was that the edition I have is the one pictured here. The cover art in no way matches the art in the story. I felt like I had fallen for some sort of cosmic joke. None of the people pictured on the cover were in the story. That art style and some of the characters appeared in the "special chapter" in the very end of the book. O...K. Let's set that aside, and NOT judge a book by its cover. The book itself will drive my teens into a frenzy. It's yaoi, kinda, sorta. And they love, love, LOVE yaoi. Everything wraps up in two volumes, so guess there's not a huge amount of depth or arc to this story.

Rereading this was a trap.

I first read this after picking up both volumes at a convention in around 2009/2010, and i was obsessed. Had completely forgotten about them until finding them in a dusty box and oh my goodness its so good.

I love this style of manga, and these boys are filled with yearning and denial all at once.
