Pretty good. Gives a good overview of a nice variety of sports and leagues throughout the world. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that some of it's information is inaccurate (especially calling Paul Pogba "Paul PROGBA" sorry, that just frustrates me."
Amazing book for sports fans who want to experience a little nostalgia going back through the year. Many sections about many sports make this a page-turning experience.
Buckley, J. (2014). Scholastic year in sports 2015. New York: Scholastic, Inc.
Citation by: Sarah Hope Tyler
Type of Reference: Almanac
Call Number: 796.02 B9244 2015
Content/Scope: This almanac provides the most up-to-date information in the world of sports. It offers facts and statistics on almost every facet of American sports, from college basketball and football to Major League Baseball and the NBA to NASCAR and tennis. It highlights the top ten moments in sports for the year and details the 2014 Winter Olympics, while including chapters on specific sports and associations, wrapping up the year with a timeline of the big events of the 2014-2015 season.
Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Scholastic Year in Sports is accurate because of its publication date and authoritative because Scholastic is a well-respected publisher. Bias is almost nonexistent, since individuals of various ethnicities are included in discussions of specific sports. The almost page “Photo Credits” section provides attribution for the reproduction of photographs from various sources, which aids in its credibility as a resource. Bias is also guarded against in the disclaimer that records, results, and statistics are current as of August 2014.
Arrangement/Presentation: Moving from the highlights to details, the chapters on specific sports and associations are presented as short articles with accompanying photographs, while the timeline at the end help users see the overlap between important events in different sports.
Relation to Other Works: This almanac will replace the current collection’s holding of the 1994 Scholastic Encyclopedia of Sports, since its information will be much more relevant to fans than the current resource, which lists Tiger Woods as the most recent individual in sports. It will also be the first almanac of the collection to focus specifically on sports.
Accessibility/Diversity: Recommended for students in third through seventh grade, this almanac is accessible to younger students with adult support. Reluctant readers will enjoy the photographs and captions, while gifted and talented students and some special education students will appreciate the statistical data and the specificity of the timeline giving months and days of events that happened before publication. The addition of a glossary would aid English language learners, and an index would help in students’ independent use of the almanac.
This nonfiction book is part of the Scholastic series that looks at different sports achievements and events that occurred throughout the year. I chose to read this book because I have a love for sports because of my dad and younger brother. I enjoy seeing students read books about sports because it reminds me of myself in elementary school. The book includes many statistics, timelines, and pictures. The main events in 2015 were the SuperBowl, the NBA playoffs, and a look-back at the 2014 Olympics was included. This book would be best for primary students, around grades 3-5. I have seen in my practicum classes that these books are popular in those grade levels. This book would be considered an informational text because it provides details about events, however, many of the sections can be considered biographical because certain pages and sections are written about a specific athlete by the author of the book. This text is a great example for students to see different types of writing in one book.
I paired this book with the fiction book titled, "Fantasy League" by Mike Lupica that was published in 2014. This book is about a young boy who excels at Fantasy Football and becomes famous and popular because of this. The information provided in the Year in Sports 2015 collection could provide students great background knowledge and a deeper look into the world of sports to better understand the vocabulary and plot in the Fanatsy League book.
This book by James Buckley Jr. is mainly about all the different commonly played and famous sports throughout the world in a single book about all the records set in different categories. It offers facts and statistics on almost every facet of American sports, from college basketball and football to Major League Baseball and the NBA to NASCAR and tennis. It has many of the Winter Olympics records and information. This is a good book overall not just for sports fans but all. However if you are a sports fan then you will be very fascinated in this book by James Buckley Jr.
Perfect for your patrons who are sports fanatics. This almanac of sports is well-organized, and crammed with plenty of action photos and sports trivia.
