Edge of the Veil

Rate this book
Edge of the Veil will be re-released October 11, 2024 with new content and changed to first-person and dual point of view.

The angel and demon may war within him, but it’s her that will be his sweet ruin.

Declan Cain isn’t who—or what—he pretends to be. Son of the demon king and the last living Nephilim, he struggles to find a balance between his warring natures. His internal fight only intensifies the night he walks into a diner and sees her. The incubus wants to seduce her and devour her lust, and the angel is determined to protect her from her greatest threat—him.

Alexandria Sade has left behind her sheltered life and is eager to experience everything she’s missed out on. She never imagined that her newfound freedom would place her in the path of a handsome stranger who’s willing to help her explore her darkest desires. Nor does Lexie realize that she’s now the willing prey for an incubus.

Little do Declan and Lexie know that their intense connection plays right into the hands of the demon king. Lexie will become his bargaining chip to persuade his son to steal the thing that will give him the power to rip apart the veils between the human, demon, and angel realms. With nothing stopping King Rimmon, he will destroy the world as they know it, leaving Declan to choose between saving all humanity or watching it burn for the woman he loves.

OH. MY GOSH. My favourite physical read of the year so far. The writing was seamless, the characters that were meant to be lovable were so lovable and the characters you were meant to hate - I hated with a burning passion (Asmodeus I am looking at you.)

I rarely leave written reviews but I feel I have to for this one. The whole thing was so addictive (what did y’all put in this book?! I couldn’t put it down but I didn’t want it to end so it was a catch 22!).

Firstly, Declan is hot. We’re starting off strong with an indisputable fact. He is HAWTTT. He is a literal incubus and repeatedly asks for consent - and I mean REPEATEDLY. He’s so caring towards Lexie even in the most spicy parts and I love that. Consent is HOT. I never thought this next sentence would ever end up leaving my brain but Ive never been more heartbroken to discover someone had toxic cvm…but that also lead to one of the funniest scenes -and one of my most favourite scenes- in the book. When they’re all at Lexies parents house for thanksgiving and he gives in to Lexie but she *takes* a little too much of his toxin and is absolutely off her face and has to try and not act drunk because it’s morning…HILARIOUS. Declan being all concerned and running her a bath was adorable though, he’s such a pure spicy bean.

Lexie, oh Lexie. She went from such an innocent, sweet girl who had never even been kissed into someone who joined the mile high club with her incubus boyfriend while on a flight with her brother and her best friend. Proud of you, girl. I really loved Lexie and I was always hoping things would work out for her. She was so patient -even though she tested him multiple times- with Declan and him wanting to keep her safe. Their love was so pure. Notable mention to the body shot scene. Hottest shot of tequila I’ve ever read. Added to my bucket list - however if Declan Cain isn’t available, I won’t be happy.

Ezra is literally hilarious, was so sus of him at first because I was convinced he was going to betray Declan and be working for Asmodeus but I’ve never been happier to be proven wrong by a character. He is such a sweetheart but boy did he make me BELLY LAUGH. The way he just shows up to the hot tub party with Lexie, Declan, Gia and Caleb made me choke - and then used a costume party as a disguise for his horns?! I was cackling. Not to mention the fact he had to keep his pants on because he had a damn tail. He’s so loyal to Declan, absolutely grew to love him with my whole heart and when he got his tail mutilated my soul was CRUSHED.

Gia is a literal mood - many of my tabs for Gia in this book are either because I couldn’t stop laughing at whatever she said or because I was like “why is that me, I am in this line and I feel called out” lol. She’s such a good friend to Lexie and the epitome of girl boss. Even when Lexie told her Declan was a literal Incubus she was supportive. Try and tell me that isn’t friendship goals, I’ll wait. Also when they were all going to go to Vienna without her and she turned up with her luggage already packed…miss girl, you are a mood and I love you for it.

My emotions towards Caleb flickered quite a few times before I found out the reason he’s so protective of Lexie. When he thought he’d failed her “again” towards the end of the book, it absolutely broke my heart. He’s such a sweetheart and he would do absolutely anything to protect Lexie and it came across to me as that being the reason he sought to help Declan find a way to end his fathers life. He was so resourceful and adamant on finding a way to help her sister be with her source of happiness that, despite it being clearly strange, he is an incubus after all, it seemed he was more hesitant when he thought Dec was a human than when he found out about his demonic nature. I came to my own conclusion that maybe that was because that was where he had placed his faith and what his passion was: medieval art, theology etc. Maybe he felt like he could relate to him better, understand him better, knew his true intent was only to protect and love Lexie - the same way he wanted to protect his sister. Also called him liking Gia from page 62…CUTEST COUPLE.

Asmodeus was a knob. I literally despised the dude. The way he kept sending people to harm Lexie?!? THE WAY HE SPOKE TO HIS OWN SON?!? THE WAY HE TREATED NEPHELE??? Absolute scum and I wanted him to die so bad lmao. Literally saying he’s wanted to kill his son since he was born but wanted to keep him around for power and to get an Archangel??? Sperm donor 101.

Nephele broke my heart multiple times. I couldn’t stop thinking about what that life must be like - having to constantly be a good source for someone you know is just using you for power and your body. She seemed like such a sweet soul and the conversation she had with Lexie made me cry. You can tell she loves her son and everything she’s done is, yes because of the bond, but also to protect her son and be able to do her best to shield him from the wrath of Asmodeus. When she died I literally sobbed and stared at my wall for a good hour because it made me think of all the things she’d never experience - she could’ve finally been free from Asmodeus and lived freely but instead she was finally free, in the worst way. But I also couldn’t help but find comfort in knowing she was away from him and he didn’t have her as a good source anymore. Hopefully the d!ckhead will starve in Hades.

Anyway, this has spoilers so will be marked as such - so if you’re reading this, you’ve also probably read the book - but if not, read it. You definitely won’t regret it! If you’re on the edge (no pun intended) because you aren’t a spice lover, I’d say go for it. There are quite a few spicy scenes but nothing too explicit. It’s definitely a good one to ease you into spice!

I received a free Advanced Reader's Copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Edge of the Veil is sexy, romantic, suspenseful and has one thing that stories with that combination often overlook.

A heart.

That might sound silly since romance stories should have a heart. But this story has the heart that I need to enjoy a romance. I need more than just two sexy people who are thrown together by a supernatural force. I need characters that aren’t just one-dimensional. I need to believe in their relationship if I’m going to root for it. And this story more than delivers.

The plot has some familiar qualities. Ordinary waitress meets a sexy, mysterious man who is absolutely enchanted to her. But this story is more than just that kind of fantasy. For one thing, it gives just as much attention to the male character as the female character. Lexie and Declan are given equal amounts of time and respect. Declan is NOT just a guy who exists to sweep Lexie off her feet. Although he’s certainly good at that kind of thing! But he has a past and a life that didn’t just involve Lexie. I also like that things don’t just instantly work out for the characters, but not in a way that is just for false drama. Lexie doesn’t do dangerous things for no reason. I think that’s another reason it helps that the story is split between Lexie and Declan. Lexie doesn’t have to be thrown into every dangerous situation just because she’s the POV. And the story wouldn’t work the same way without Declan’s perspective.

Declan is the son of the king of demons. He is also the son of a Nephilim. That gives him the unique combination of being part demon, part angel and part human. There is an eternal war inside of him, but it doesn’t make him mopey or bitter. He doesn’t love being that way, but it doesn’t turn him into a Byronic wannabe. And things change for the better as soon as he meets Lexie.

Lexie is an ordinary eighteen-year-old woman with no experience. Edge of the Veil actually gives a reason for her lack of experience. I believe she would have fallen for Declan even without the supernatural connection. They have sparks from the moment that they meet and things only grow more intense over time. There’s one part that I particularly like where Lexie acknowledges her youth, but makes a convincing case on why that shouldn’t minimize her feelings. I find that part so genuine. Some people know more at eighteen than at eighty and Lexie is one of those people.

I also want to make clear that Declan shows Lexie nothing but respect in this story. He has the power to control her and consume her, but always makes certain that he has her consent for things. Even before he met Lexie, it’s clear that he’s always respected women.

Because of Declan’s unique life, the two of them have more than their fair share of trouble. And his very nature causes a very creative barrier between the two of them. Because of their feelings and Lexie’s determination, they do their best to get around that barrier. I really like that Declan doesn’t push Lexie away ‘for her own good’. Yes, her life is in danger with him as a boyfriend. Yes, intimacy is incredibly risky for them. But my favorite part of this story is their mutual struggle to make it worse.

But this story isn’t just the Lexie and Declan Show. This story has an excellent supporting cast who don’t just exist for the sake of Lexie and Declan’s story. I am happy to say that this isn’t one of those stories where every male character falls for Lexie. She gets Declan and that’s more than enough.

Instead, her friend Gia get the attention of more guys. For ONCE the vivacious, loyal friend is given the attention that she deserved. Gia is a standout character. She brings even more life to the story. She is completely loyal to Lexie and always has her best interest at heart. It’s also fun to have a strong, sexual woman in the story who isn’t there to make the main character look more pure. They compliment each other so well. Some of Gia’s dialogue made me laugh far too loudly.

Other supporting characters include Lexie’s brother Caleb and Declan’s friend Ezra. Ezra is an ‘imp’, but has deep loyalty to Declan. He’s another standout character.

I have a personal love for Lexie’s brother. Caleb starts out as a typical ‘overprotective’ brother. But like Lexie’s inexperience, there’s a reason for Caleb’s behavior. He grows into a supportive, strong character. It’s nice to read a supernatural story that shows respect to the human characters.

It’s also nice that this story shows the importance of family. There is more than just sexy love in this story. There is the love of friends and the love of family. That’s what I meant when I said that Edge of the Veil has a heart.

This story also has amazing worldbuilding and rich lore. It has a very dramatic and action-packed ending. And it isn’t all swept up perfectly.

Somehow this story managed to have a powerful, sexy romance, interesting supporting characters, looming suspense, an exciting finale and still manage to fly along. But nothing feels rushed. Edge of the Veil is one of those rare stories that accomplished the perfect balance. Lexie and Declan’s story was concluded in a satisfying way by the end. So even though it’s hard to say goodbye to the characters, it’s amazing to read such an epic story that ISN’T one thousand pages.

If people love sexy, romantic supernatural stories, they should read this book. If people are more wary of the genre, they should read it. This isn’t my preferred genre, but I’m so glad that I read it.

Edge of the Veil is book one in the Veil Duet and follows Declan Cain and Alexandria “Lexie” Slade.

I literally devoured this book! Right from the start, it had me captivated, and I couldn’t stop because I had to know what happened! Declan is an incubus that is also part angel and human! He feeds on lust, and one night, he finds himself drawn to a little diner in Chicago where he meets Lexie. Right from the start, they hit it off, but if he thought she would give in to his charm right away, he was sorely mistaken.

Lexie is strong-willed, thoughtful, super caring, and a bit of a brat at times. Declan is charming, morally gray, caring, a dom, and a complete cinnamon roll! Honestly, they are so much more than I ever could have imagined. The spice in this book was chef’s kiss. My god, the mouth on Declan Theodore Cain. That boy is a dirty bird and I loved it! Honestly, though, this book was the perfect blend of plot and spice. Crystal and Felicity really know how to write fantastic books that will keep you on your toes. The side characters were also hilarious, and I loved them just as much as the MMCs!

Edge of the Veil will be part of a series, but I highly recommend reading this book now!

You will enjoy this book if you like the following:
- paranormal romance
- possessive and morally grey
- dom x brat vibes
- touch her and ☠️
- incubus / angel hybrid mmc
- human fmc
- dual pov

Thank you so much to Crystal J. Johnson & Felicity Vaughn for the gifted copy!

Such a good read! I don’t know how they always balance plot and smut so well but it is literally chefs kiss! I am OBSESSED with the witty banter and of course Ezra. And whoever thought of the toxic gravy remark is an evil genius. 😈

All in all, this is such a great book that left me in tears near the end. The plot, smut, and character development was really just so good and melded together so well. 10/10 would recommend!!

Thank you to Crystal J. Johnson and Felicity Vaughn for providing an ARC copy of this book.

Edge of the Veil is a paranormal romance with a focus on spice-- too much spice. While I understand why this is (no spoilers), it interferes with the pacing. I found the beginning of the book drawn out, the middle rushed, and the end drawn out. I would have preferred less spice to a more in-depth experience with the paranormal aspect (incubus/demon/angel/human hybrid) since it is a huge part of the plot.

I adored Lexie, the FMC. She is strong willed, thoughtful, and grounded. As for Declan, I was hopeful to like him, but often found him too formal and rigid. His stress seemed to leak from the pages on to me, which only stands to my testament of Crystal & Felicity being excellent writers.
They have great eye for paranormal romances. However, Edge of the Veil fell short for me. If you're looking for a great Crystal & Felicity read you should check out Kept in the Dark or Unleashing Chaos.

I borrowed this book from my daughter and got completely addicted to the story . Not my usual taste in books (I am a non-fiction reader so this was very far out of my comfort zone) but I loved it . It was easy to follow with many twists and turns I did not see coming . I would recommend this book and I look forward to reading more from the authors .

The charm of love at first sight shadowed by the dark realm from which Declan hails made for an exciting read that teenage Bri would have gone wild for!!

With its fast-paced plot, layers comprised by the different worlds and theology present, and the golden threads of a fated romance, Edge of the Veil is the perfect read for those looking for something fresh and enticing on the paranormal market.

The veils between heaven and hell are set to burn beneath the flames of the budding love affair that burns between a man (or tribid) guarding secrets, and the woman who wants to uncover them; and what a teasing affair it was! The establishment of consent and the fact that Declan never exploited his incubus nature earned major brownie points, and the scenes between these two were well laid and balanced amidst the stellar world-building, thrilling action and suspense. The authors even found a way to add in some comedic scenes that were just perfection - a certain Thanksgiving scene, I’m looking at you! lol.

As much as I loved the majority of this story, the romance between Lexie and Declan did feel fast-tracked and too much like insta-love for my preference (no fault to the book, just personal taste), even if it was the perfect balance of heated and sweet. I also found the lacking reaction, and almost immediate acceptance to the existence of demons and Declan’s true identity to be unrealistic to my expectations.

These minor elements aside, each of these characters - both majors and minors - were well-developed, living, breathing souls upon the page and the talents of Johnson and Vaughn shine brightly through them all. This proved to be a well-written story with the power to suck many in as it leads them on this thrilling battle between good and evil, and the wars raging within.

Edge of the Veil is the paranormal romance I wish I had a decade ago, back when the only angel/demon books I knew about were YA. Y’all. I gobbled this up like it’s Thanksgiving, all the spicy peppers included 🥵

Is it fair to say it was the spiciest slow-burn I’ve ever read? Right off the bat the chemistry is there. The teasing and the wanting and needing, but they can only get so far because there’s certain…consequences. It was the perfect buildup of tension and release, and in my opinion, the most realistic for a virgin like Lexie.

All of my favorite stories have characters who seem to come off the page, and Lexie, Declan, Gia, and Ezra are larger than life! Personally, I feel like I’m a Lexie, but always wanted to be like Gia. God, that woman is my fave! She’s hilarious and quick as a whip, and I’ve never wanted to be a secondary character more. I mean hellooooo she reads IPB !!!

I love that we learn right alongside with Lexie and uncover Declan’s world together. There were times I wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake her for certain things, but that just added to the raw emotion I felt at different scenes. She is confident and bold and willing to go after what she wants, which gets mad respect from me.

Some of my favorite themes:

💫 dual POV
💫 touch her and 💀
💫 consent king
💫 praise

And most importantly, HEA! ✨

5 stars ⭐️

I was so happy to be part of those to receive this book as an arc, Crystal and Felicity are two of my favorite authors. As I understand, this book is a revised version from the one that came out 5 years ago.

So, I love spicy books, I love paranormal romance, and this definitely had spice and was easy and enjoyable to read.

Declan Cain is very “take charge” and dominating, and I do like that in an MMC, and Lexie could hold her own as she’s a strong FMC, which is refreshing (helpless and clueless just gets annoying). They had a good chemistry and bond, which holds through the story, and I also liked the secondary characters, we get to see glimpse of their life which adds depth to the story. I wouldn’t mind a second book with their stories.

However, I do feel like the end, the unraveling of the story was… sudden? Or maybe slightly rushed? At the least, something was missing.

It was a good read though, but my favorites are still Kept in the Dark and the Amber Shift (spicy ++++).

Where do I even begin. I had the privilege of reading the Arc and I am very much behind on the review, life has been a whirlwind.

Now back to biz and to the book.

Lexie, there are times I saw myself in her. How her brother is so protective and how there are promises needing to be kept. The “I am an adult” trope comes into play. Then trying to keep up with school and keeping grades up. Seeing someone and then relating in a way really kept me in the book and kept me hooked. I love the character development for her as well.

Now DECLAN. Where do I even begin with this beautiful consent of a king. The chemistry of how he wants to be with Lexie and just absolutely ruin her but then he has this other side of wanting to protect her. How he goes out of his way to understand everything. The way he is so gentle with her and the spice had an absolute chokehold on me as I read this book and learned about Declan.

I 10000% percent recommend as this book. The chemistry, the angst of it really kept me hooked on the book.

I have 3 words for everyone who loves romance with a paranormal twist: “Read it now!” This is one of those books that come along and keep your attention from beginning to end. You become so invested in the character that, by the end, you just want more of them! Declan and Lexie are both such strong, vulnerable, self-aware characters that you can't help but fall in love with them. Oh, their best friends are a riot as well and add so much banter and depth to the book. The spice is definitely present and DANG Declan delivers the most devilishly delicious lines! Declan should definitely be on your list of morally gray book boyfriends because who doesn’t love a demon/angel, human hybrid with delectably salacious thoughts and habits. Just know, there is so much more to this hybrid that meets the eye. As always, please read trigger warnings before reading this book.

Edge of the Veil is the first book by Crystal J. Johnson, I have ever read. I have to say that I'm highly impressed.

I automatically fell in love with Lexie and Declan. The chemistry between them was fire. Declan being half angel, half demon, and half human and Lexie being human knowing they were meant to be bonded together makes this story even more enjoyable to read. There is some action in it but the romance makes you feel what the characters are feeling. The epilogue also tells you where the characters are years later.

I would definitely recommend this book!!!

This book is it! Declan and Lexie’s story was WILD! He’s a lust demon angel human hybrid and seriously what more could you want from a MMC. He’s the trifecta 😂. Lexie was such a supportive and caring FMC, she never really even batted an eye when there was major drama between the worlds happening and her life was at stake.
This book is HEAVY on the plot AND spice. Best of both worlds. There’s even two comedic relief besties who were hilarious. You can’t help but root for all of them check this one out if you like paranormal romance!

This was such a fun and exciting story and by the end I was simply overjoyed for Lexie and Declan after everything they endure together! Declan is part demon/ angel/ human and she is all human and their relationship and story is so good, he’s a man who truly loves her so much🥹 it’s action packed, spicy, found family goodness and yet another great book from Crystal and felicity! I never read it before this rewrite but I can say that it’s a truly original romance and I loved it:)

Edge of the Veil provides everything you could possibly want and more from a novel involving all three realms. Lexie is a great FMC, the perfect blend of innocent and bratty to Declan's imposing, rogueish charm. Lexie's BFF Gia and brother Caleb, and Declan's best friend Ezra all add their own charms to this exciting, spicy-as-all-hell tale of good battling evil.

Family means nothing for the demon king, proving that blood isn't always thicker than water, and there are some truly scary moments when the demons show their claws. This book was unputdownable; I read it in a single sitting, and now I am desperate to read book 2! I cannot recommend it highly enough!

This was such a deliciously spicy book and I enjoyed every moment of it! Declan is probably one of my favorite book boyfriends of all the books I’ve read this year and the heat and the chemistry between him and Lex was amazing and kept me hooked the entire time I was reading! Thank you to Crystal and Felicity for the ARC of this story.

Sweet and suspenseful

This was truly a sweet romance. Non stop reading, would love to see a second that follows Finley and his sibling. Not a lot of curse words, which I liked. Suspenseful look at the live between a tribred, look forward to future work!

DNF nope just could not read this book it was too jumpy, too predictable, too cringe and overall just irritating. This was so unrealistic as. And every time they was spicy scene it went to black or it was not described at all. I just did not like this book

Great read

This is an enjoyable story if you like angels, demons, hybrids and romance. Declan is sweet and protective, making a fantastic hero. Alexandria is well written and and even all the side characters were lovable.

Where to begin?! This book truly was everything. I literally devoured it. Seriously one of my top reads of 2024. I couldn’t get enough of Declan & Lexie. It was completely rewritten and released and let me just say they did an amazing job. The banter, s3xual tension, and chemistry was so good!! Not to mention it’s the spiciest book they’ve written so far. Also The side characters were so funny too! I can’t wait for more. I highly recommend this book.
