Carolina goes to the Sunday market to buy a gift for her grandmother's birthday. She walks around the market and sees many different items being sold. Carolina and her mother take a break and dance in the streets singing traditional ballads. This book describes many of Peru's traditions. Carolina decides to buy her grandmother hand-carved walking stick with a hummingbird carved on the handle so her grandmother can use it to walk with the to the market in the future. Her grandmother loves the gift.

This book does a good job describing Peru's culture. It could be read during a history lesson about different cultures. There is even a map and more information on Peru and the Sunday Market in the back. I like how it includes translations of the words throughout the book. The Sunday Market is a huge tradition in Peru.

A very clear look at traditional Peruvian culture, this book provides delightful insight to how vast and diverse Latina/o culture truly is. The art was simplistic, but spoke to traditional styles, and the message of finding the perfect gift for her abuelita spoke to a universal idea of kindness.
