Well written. Unsatisfying ending.
Well written, vibrant world, plenty of little jokes. As the book progresses it becomes obvious that the story is mostly about the town and it's people rather than any one person. Despite some slower or somewhat boring parts overall it was fun to see the world and the fun character of the town.
With that said, we get to the end of this whole novel just to discover this was all just a preface. The meat of the rising issue? We know almost nothing. All those fun and zany legendary townsfolk? Not where they should be. Preparation for what's to come? Non-existant.
At the end of it all we were only introduced to some of the players. Left with question after question and a big mystery as to why any of this was perpatrated or how anyone expected things to be sustainable with how things were set up. Not to mention the disquieting tidbits about the "otherside"/afterlife.
The narrative started out as a funny insight into grander depths of that universe's history and legendary figures but ended feeling like a nihilistic disappointment, where I'm not sure if I want to care any more.
All that said, I do recomend the series. I just hope the sequal can leave me more satisfied than a 250 page exposition.

You shouldn't need to get through most of the book to reach the story.
If you find yourself over four fifths through a book without any solid storyline, you should just put it down. This is a drawn out prologue.

This was simultaneously a fun book to read, but completely unengaging.
It has lots of fun concepts, but doesn't stick with any of them long enough to hook you. The characters have the potential to be interesting, but none have any real agency, so I didn't get attached to any of their stories. As a fan of character led stories, it is usually the characters that suck me into a book and compel me to keep reading so that I can follow on their journey, but none of these characters seem to even be on the journey.
I think the best way to describe this book is that it's full of great background elements and secondary characters, so it would be a great setting for a story. However, it feels like it's missing the actual story part, which is why I couldn't finish it.
I fully recognise that there's an element of subjectivity here. People looking for humour and whimsy without needing a compelling story to tie it all together very well might enjoy this book. For that reason, this book gets the benefit of the doubt and a third star.

What an absodamnlutely ridiculous story! And yeah I loved it only considering for a minute to dnf it. Hey it was only for a minute... for reals 😄 ... so yeah you'll need to give the book and before too long you'll find yourself laughing on the floor. Get the audiobook and meet the residents of Boomtown.

Not really into this one
This would probably have been better as separate books. There were so many points of view and you never really had enough story to identify with the character before the viewpoint changed.
On the bright side I didn't find any typos.

Solid read!

I found this book interesting, but I had trouble really enjoying it. The progression of the characters were easy to follow, but it was not the best book for me.
