About the author

Montreal-based JC Little is an award-winning author, blogger and an award-nominated animation director, with a career spanning more than 30 years. Her background includes new media, commercials, feature films, and the Disney-syndicated and Gemini-nominated kids’ TV show My Life Me. She has written and illustrated four books, and is best known online as The Animated Woman. JC lives in a messy house with her lovely British husband and three fantastically opinionated children.

JC Little is a charming animator, and her quirky sense of humor has had me tuning in to her blog for a number of years now. So when she offered me the chance to read Motherhood, I jumped on it.

I have to say this. For parents of littles, this will be a cute and quirky addition to your bookshelf. As you watch your children grow, however, it takes on a poignant new meaning. From the day they're born and they steal your heart to the day they walk away, leaving you with a smile, a tear and a memory, they carry a part of you, just as you carry a part of them.

As the parent of teens (well, a teen and a tween, with another growing too fast for my taste) the end of this book was a tear jerker. College and the days of the empty nest are closer than they seemed during those endless toddler days, and JC captured that moment perfectly.

In “Motherhood” J C Little has create a sweet little book that speaks volumes about Freedom ,Love and the changing relationship between a mother and her children than I have read in many much longer tracts about the subject.
It is a little different, first it is wordless... just beautifully animated pictures that convey meaning and context. Each page provides a rich and endearing perspective as a woman passes from free-spirited youth to a woman bearing her child, to the understanding and necessity of letting that child find its way in the world, secure in the knowledge that there will always be a strong and permanent bond between them.
I have always found Ms. Little’s animations to be charming and endearing, witty and on point … I am certain you will too.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words.

One of the books that is an epitome of this statement is Motherhood. Motherhood is a picture book that depicts the bond between mother and child. No words are used at all throughout the book.

The author does a terrific job with the illustrations. She has a knack of using the simplest technique to capture such universal expressions, like joy, confusion and sadness. I also liked the progression of the heart (child): from when it crawled to when it began walking and gaining a sense of independence.

This is one of those book that touches the heart. Whether you are a parent that wants to share a greatly illustrated work with a message or if you are a youthful spirit that wants to celebrate and reminisce over the process, JC Little has successfully crafted a work that has universal appeal.

I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

J.C. Little has created a beautiful, though slightly unconventional, storybook about motherhood.

Using only lovely childlike illustrations - no words - the author relates the whole of the mothering experience, from the pre-child freedom to the bittersweet pride of watching your child grow up and leave you.

As someone who's never had children, I can't pretend to relate to the mother in this story, but I did enjoy experiencing the joys and sadness of motherhood with her.

I received this as a first-reads giveaway.

A cute little story picturing motherhood (although maybe the carefree life before children were given a bit to much space in this picture book).

I loved the little heart, the child as being the mother's heart ripped out of her body, first as a baby, and then growing, and finally leaving.

I must say the flower in the end puzzled me, what was it supposed to represent?

But still, it was nice and cute, and wildly outside of my regular-reading-zone.

I saw the original comic when it came out years ago and thought it was the perfect description of motherhood. I loved the book version so much. It still makes me teary-eyed.
I got this for myself but this would make a perfect gift for any mother, grandmother, godmother dad-mother, auntie-mom or anyone with a mom heart.
