I think this is an erotic novella. Sort of.

Novella's can be hit or miss with characterisation but I found it easy to get to know Jane and her husband Jacob. Jane has hit the Regency marriage jackpot with a handsome, virile husband who is madly in love with her. And as she says, she loves him more. They have a perfect life with their two daughter's with only a little niggle with Jacob's brother Arthur who is not a nice man.

Jane and Jacob had a fine home and two lovely daughters, but no heir to keep up Jacob's line of inheritance. After the unsavory brother leaves his ailing brother and sister-in-law, Jacob comes up with a plan that might thwart Arthur's coveting of Jacob's title and holdings.

Jacob has a dear cousin, Matthew, who is on the unlucky and poor side of the family. Jacob had always attempted to help him in his endeavors to better his situations, but Matthew has pride and won't take charity, even if it is from a cherished family member. When Jacob calls upon Matthew to assist in his quest for an heir, both Matthew and Jane are aghast, but realizing the disgusting Arthur will gain all, spurns Matthew and Jane into the unthinkable.

When the unthinkable becomes so pleasurable, what it takes for the trio to come to terms with their consciences and their feeling will surprise the reader.

I have to say that I truly enjoyed this short but sizzling novella. It was well written and while I usually run from stories told in the first person, I welcomed this tale of desperation turned to perseverance and awakening. Jane and Jacob are a strong and caring couple, who have a powerful relationship. Matthew's entrance may shake the couple a little, but it would take much more to sever what this pair has, and maybe what the trio could have together is worth the piqued emotions and jealousy. THE PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF LADY JANE FIELDING by Viveka Portman is a steamy and sensual journey that I recommend be taken. Nicely done!

The sad truth is that if he can not produce a male heir his horrible brother , Arthur will inherit everything and leave Jane under his control. Jacob simply can not abide by that, so after a year of trying to conceive with no luck, Jacob makes a proposal to his wife that could solve all their problems.

This novella ( approximately 71 pages), is a regency period historical romance, but not the usual fare. This book would be definitely be classified as erotica. For any of you that follow my reviews you know that I steer far away from hard core erotica, and if I can avoid ANY erotica, I do. I did read an Escape publication a while back and it pushed the envelope a little, but it was pretty good, so without doing any research I agreed to review this one when asked. So, for the record, this one is pretty far out of my comfort zone. However, the set up is such that even if you are not a reader of erotica romance, especially with a regency period setting, you might find that this premise is quite understandable. Producing a male heir was of utmost importance in those days. The men were under a lot of pressure to marry if for no other reason than to hopefully produce male issue. Women were forbidden to inherit and an estate would be passed off to the nearest male relative even if that meant a sixth cousin twenty times removed or something. In this case Arthur, a most despicable man would inherit and the thought so repulsed Jane and Jacob they took extreme measures to keep that from taking place.

The author did a great job was depicting Arthur in a bad light so that the reader actually feared for Jane's future if something were to happen to Jacob, and money would have been the least of her problems. The entire uncomfortable situation was well written with the people involved expressing real human feelings and emotions. Matthew was perhaps the most uncomfortable of everyone, but Jacob also exhibited feelings he didn't factor into his master plan. Jane got caught between feeling guilty, ashamed, embarrassed, and curious, excited, and initial repulsion turned into a pleasing experiment that everyone could accept .
The story was strangely fascinating for me and I was really pulled into the storyline despite my reservations. I wouldn't want to read this type of book often, but the author did a great job of taking this subject matter and making it a story that could appeal to a wide audience of romance readers. I don't condone this scenario but again, the premise is one that made the book seem less about the sexual escapades and more about people learning to cope with a bad deal and finding a way to make it work for them …. in spades.
For those who enjoy erotica, erotic historical romance, or for those that want to read something a little out of the ordinary for regency period romance, then you won't want to miss this one. Overall the story was well written, the characters were well drawn, and hopefully an heir will soon be on it's way.

For Jane and Jacob, the loss of Fielding House and their legacy is absolutely unthinkable and so, a plan is hatched.

Matthew, a distant and poor cousin to Jacob has been called to Fielding House and upon his arrival he is enlightened. The plan to save Fielding House will require Jacob to step aside and allow his younger cousin to sleep with his wife in the hopes of conceiving a male heir. To be sure, all involved are uncomfortable with this plan: Jacob is having a terribly difficult time overcoming his jealousy, Matthew is quite concerned over losing the dearly held friendship with his cousin and, Jane is beside herself at the thought of taking another man into her bed. Or, is she? Matthew is a very sweet and handsome young man and Jane is certainly interested in the possibility of experiencing him. As if the situation weren’t guilt-ridden and awkward enough, it has also become urgent as Arthur is pressuring Jacob to name him heir to Fielding House. With urgency, curiosity and more than a little bit of guilt at the forefront, Jane and Matthew consummate their relationship. As matters at Fielding House go from bad to worse, Jane, Matthew and Jacob have to come to some sort of understanding where their carnal arrangement is concerned. Arthur is an ass of epic proportions and causing all kinds of trouble, Jane likes being with Matthew and her husband and, between the three of them they must find a way to preserve Fielding House.

The Bottom Line: Regency England is once again lit up with naughty in Viveka Portman’s third installment of the Regency Diaries. Jane and Jacob Fielding have a true love match and when all they have worked for is threatened, they work together to solve the problem no matter how uncomfortable it may be. I very much like the encounters between Jane and Jacob as there is true respect and affection between them which results in both being able to be brutally honest about their situation. Matthew is just a sweet, sweet wonder and his joining the family is so awkward that it is endearing and I liked him immediately. The naughty bits are delightful and the way the three solve the awkwardness of the situation is as exciting as it is naughty for its time and place. Once again, I was totally pulled into Portman’s world and glad to be there. My only complaint, the Regency Diaries are just too short :) ...more

A scandalous and rather unusual solution to the situation comes to Jacob: his cousin Matthew is kind, generous and most importantly willing to help. His rapport with the couple is much more to both their tastes, but can they manage to produce a male heir before anyone discovers this unusual arrangement?

Surprisingly, for a novella Viveka Portman manages to define character and voice, and add an emotional component into what could be an incredibly tricky situation. Both thrilled and appalled at the solution, all three in this triangle are struggling with their own feelings of jealousy, envy and insecurity as the bond between Jane and Matthew grows: none more unsettled by the emotional turmoil than Jacob. Portman has cleverly given us characters that are risking emotional pain and suffering for the best of intentions, even with deception at the heart of the arrangement. Fast paced and tightly written, readers will be drawn into the emotions as the story progresses to reveal some very steamy moments on the way to the conclusion. A quick and steamy read that doesn’t lose sight of the love and determination of one man to protect what he cherishes most: his family.

This was a very good historical erotic novella, featuring a menage that started out as a necessity but turned out to be more at the end. A quick read if you want something hot, sexy and short. Despite that the story is engaging and the plot, although, has been used before in contemporary erotic fiction, seems more in keeping with the historical equivalent.

The Private Affairs of Lady Jane Fielding is written in first person from Jane's perspective. Using a journal to confide her innermost thoughts, Jane reveals her fears about her husband's accident, the disgust over her brother-in-law's actions, and her trepidation over her husband's solution to their pressing need for an heir. There is never any doubt about the couple's deep love and devotion to one another however a future with Arthur controlling her fate provides a compelling reason for Jane to give serious thought to Jacob's proposal.

Seen only through Jane's eyes, Jacob and Matthew are vibrantly life-like with a great deal of depth. Jacob's plan is born of desperation but he is just as uneasy with the situation as Jane and Matthew. His love for Jane is always apparent as is his keen despair over the loss of his fertility. Matthew is hesitant to agree to his cousin's plan, but he is quite impoverished and in need of funds to renovate his crumbling estate. All three are in an untenable position but when Arthur continues to press Jacob to declare him as his heir, Jane and Matthew reluctantly agree to Jacob's plan.

The three have very surprising and unexpected reactions once their arrangement is put into motion. Jealousy, unanticipated desire and unforeseen pleasure lead to an open and honest discussion of the situation which results in a shocking decision regarding the future of their unusual relationship.

The Private Affairs of Lady Jane Fielding is an outstanding erotic novella that fans of historical romances do not want to miss. It is a well-written story with an engaging cast of appealing characters, incredibly sensual sex scenes and an amazing array of believable emotions. Absolutely one of the best historical romances I have read in a long time and as soon as I finished it, I immediately purchased and eagerly devoured Viveka Portman's backlist.

Jane has a Jane Fielding and her husband Jacob are a couple very much in love, they have two daughters and life is good in the Fielding home. Jane has a good reputation in society she is everything a proper lady should be. In the privacy of her own home however, she is a wanton woman caving to her carnal desires. I found her character intriguing, and thought her beautiful and caring. Jacob dotes on his Janie, and when he thinks that he can’t be everything his lovely wife needs it tears him up inside. I admired Jacob’s devotion to his wife and her well-being. Any woman would be lucky to have such a husband. Jacob’s cousin Matthew looks very much like Jacob, he is quite dashing. Circumstances have left Matthew with very little money, but this wonderful man still has his manners and his pride.

I adore regency novels, so I was excited when I found that two of my favorite genres would be combined into one story. It is apparent that Portman shares my love for regency. She paints a perfect portrait of the way ladies and gentlemen were expected to behave in these times. There are moments that were quite erotic as well, especially when certain acts and actions in those days were considered taboo. There were times that the story felt rushed. I do wish Portman would have given more background on the Fielding’s marriage, and more of Matthew and the man he was. There was an obvious attraction between Jane and Matthew, and I would have been ecstatic if the attraction and the tension those feelings brought would have been explored further.

The Private Affairs of Lady Jane Fielding is an entertaining novella that lovers of regency and erotica will enjoy. I would rate this story a 3.5, because of the reasons I listed above. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more from Viveka Portman and I hope to hear from her again very soon!

I was intrigued by the very theme of this book - loving wife needing to bed someone else to beget an heir. Shocking, innit? I wondered how the author would turn this around - I've read stories with such themes before and they left me cold when not downright feeling unsympathetic to the heroine.

I am a diehard fan of regency romances & I will try any genre at least once, but I do have a big FLAW of my own, first person writing. Ms. Portman does write with naughtiness, but all the "I" & "ME" just confuse me & I can't be my normal voyeur if the story. An author once told me that all characters demand their own voice, so how can I fault the characters. I have been BLESSED that reading has helped with my Meniere's Disease & some many authors have GIFTED me with that, so I have to much respe ...more

My goodness, I absolutely love this series of novellas, though I also continually wish for them to be longer. Every one has been delightful and this third installment is no exception. The arrangement made amongst Jane, her husband Jacob, and his cousin Matther is scandelous and at the same time quite intruiging.
